Friday OT Thread: Well, I never...

Don't know what else to do. Brought my bigass bluetooth speaker. (One that can be heard over metalgrinding in a shop). So I was blaring that. Threw the frisbee around. Lounged around. Swam out in the ocean a bit. I don't know what else you want me to do.

No one wanted to drink though. It is banned on the beaches here and it is a $1000 fine and/or jail.

It is windy as hell, the water feels like I'm swimming in urine, and the saltiness feels weird as ****

If I'm not in a large group of people, I always bring a book.

Also, is there no drinking or no drinking alcohol? If it's just alcohol, there should be plenty of college tricks to easily get booze there.

yeah, my favorite thing to do on a beach is sit and read a book with a drink next to me. Floating in the water is nice too.

No drinking alcohol. I do the college tricks stuff but to be honest the interns that I work with are kind of lame. The company is big, cool, and advanced but none of them seem to drink at all. And they scoff at the idea of drinking illegally on the beach. They literally did a board game night. Which is whatever, I went but I was one of 3 that were drinking.

It seems like they got a whole bunch of people that follow the mantra of "I don't need alcohol to have a good time". It doesn't help the fact that the lowest GPA that I've heard from someone is a 3.8... (meaning they generally don't go and do things outside of schoolwork IMO). Mine is much much lower than that

Last night for example. The company bought out a whole section at a minor league baseball game. It was $1 beer night. Most people were buying 1 at a time and only had 2 or 3 if that. I was buying 4 at a time.

Good company. Bad interns.

are they a lot of local interns? Maybe a lot of Baptist influence? Because GPA's aside, I find it odd that you'd have a large group of young, drinking-age students at drinking appropriate events not interested in drinking.

Oh and don't get me started about the other Iowa State person down here. When I try and talk up ISU, he'll just be like "It's not that cool. Don't believe him". Ugh...

Lots of local interns from South Carolina and Clemson. Georgia Tech is the other big one. Embry Riddle has a few. Then it is kinda spread out.

The guys that drink go to ISU (me), Penn State, and Purdue.

I have only ever heard one person who attended ISU talk badly about it and she was a worthless POS anyway. She took 6 years for some type of Biology B.S. and ended up working at a bank, I think.

I know I'm the odd one out on this board in terms of consumption. I don't drink much. Nothing against drinking..it just isn't something I do a lot. That said...maybe they're having trouble understanding your lifestyle.

Are you doing an internship with the bible scouts?

Sounds like just a lame group of people. Don't blame the beach for the fact that they all suck.

And you need to publicly denounce and disown the Iowa State guy. I'm dead serious. My guess is he's someone that lived with his parents while attending.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it at all; it just seems a bit outside of normal for the current generation. 1-2 definitely, but the majority? Him saying that many of them are local really makes me think it's somewhat of a religious influence. And not that they are necessarily Baptist, it just may be that Baptist beliefs have just made alcohol less a part of their culture compared to other areas of the US.

Along with the never gotten a ticket, I've never been pulled over. And regarding the states you have been in, do fly over or drive throughs (only stopping at Rest Stops) count? What about landing in an airport? PS coffee is amazing.
Fly over = No. Drive through = Yes. Landing in an airport = No if you didn't leave the airport.

I think I am more of the college lifestyle though. Generally speaking of course. I mean there are around 100 of us interns down here. Only a handful drink regularly? It is just shocking to me.

I'm trying not to blame anything because of the ****** people. Especially the company. But man if I get offered a full-time, I don't know if I would gel with the other new full-timers.

And no, I won't publicly do it. He just doesn't seem to want to be here. I think he wanted a different location.

You probably nailed it with that one. And it's probably a partial reason I don't really drink a lot...well, that and an ex that DID. I guess what tripped my trigger was the implication that you have to have alcohol as part of an activity to make it fun...it sounds a bit like a need for alcohol, which can morph into something much less desirable.

Well I agree that it sounds bad but I'm 21. Most of the interns are 21. This is the first time we can really go all out drinking and be good because we're finally legal. You don't have to have alcohol to have a good time but sometimes it makes things a lot of fun!

I'm kind of tippytoeing around because I don't want to sound like an old schoolmarm. I'm not judging you...but I AM offering an alternative point of view. Don't be mad...it's part of the grandma code. :)

I can understand the other side. I have a couple friends back at ISU that don't drink very much at all. But these interns are just...lame. They just don't know how to have fun basically in any form. They just need to loosen up.

do they act uncomfortable or seem like they "look down" on those of you who do drink? Because that would really make it awkward and not fun then. It's totally cool to have a mixture of people at an event, some drinking, some not, but when one group is making the other group feel "wrong" for their choice, that kills the fun real fast.
