He said you can't expect 9 wins every year... NOT A YEAR. Big difference. And saying it your way makes it sound like we never should expect it. Saying every year, implies we will have down years.

Don't let a true quote get in your way on this though....
Exact word for word quote straight from Jamie "At Iowa State if you think you are going to win 9 games a year, I just dont think you are thinking correctly." You take as you want, but I didnt think it was warrented.

Way to pull out the "i played high school football" card Al Bundy.

You don't think these coaches prepare to win every week? Actually, YOU probably don't.

Try it, that way you will stop ******** all over these threads

What are you talking about? I am never negative, Im as homer as they come and I will pick ISU to win every week, can never pick against them. That quote rubbed me the wrong way the other night and it did to others too.

So your lack of reading and listening skills spill over to your self awareness...Got it. Have a nice day

That is pretty disturbing about what Pollard said. As I mentioned before, context matters. It is one thing to have a season like this if you just finished a 9-3 season, but when you put something like this out there from a coach coming off of 3 straight losing seasons and has never finished higher than 8th place in the conference or won more than 6 games in a year, it is a concern. And I hate to say this, but we have no standing to be criticizing the dbags to the east right now. They will likely be going to their 11th bowl in 13 seasons under Ferentz, and I cannot think of any rational person who would prefer what we have experienced during that time frame.

And I hate it when we compare Rhoads to other coaches. One is because each program has unique circumstances, but I especially hate it when he is compared to people like Beamer and Pinkel who were late bloomers. Those guys are exceptions. For every Beamer and Pinkel out there, there are 10 guys who failed miserably. And for every Beamer and Pinkel there is a Barry Alvarez or Mike Bellotti or Bobby Bowden or Mike Gundy who was able to achieve regular winning seasons within a few years and sustain it. Mike Gundy got Oklahoma State to 9 wins in his 4th year, and now their version of a "down season" is an 8-5 finish and absolutely destroying a Big Ten school in a bowl game. Even Bill Snyder, who many people here seem to be fond of comparing Rhoads to for some reason, took Kansas State of all places to 9 wins in his 5th year and did not have another losing season until 12 years later (finishing with at least 9 wins in 10 of those 12 seasons).

I hate negativity, but I also dislike the kook-aid drinkers who are oblivious to reality and I especially dislike all of the apologists. I am sick of excuses and this "but we are Iowa State" mentality. I am not ringing the death knell for Rhoads this year, but this offseason will be pivotal for him. How he responds to this colossal failure of a season will define him as a coach, dictate the direction of our program for the next 5-10 years, and determine if the is "the one". If he bounces back with a season better than his first 5, I will have hope that he has had enough and is ready to start kicking *** instead of making excuses. If he rebounds with yet another sub-.500 finish, I will have next to no faith that he is the right guy to get it done.

Mike Gundy? Yeah this guy had nothing to do with getting that thing started...

I keep this quote on the front of my website for when I get these thought, because we have all been there with Cyclone football:

“The pleasure of rooting for Goliath is that you can expect to win. The pleasure of rooting for David is that, while you don’t know what to expect, you stand at least a chance of being inspired.â€￾
Michael Lewis, Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game

We will never be Goliath. But I can guarantee you that you will be inspired by this program again...it just might not be this year.

Yes, I am positive that Les Miles paying players in 2003 has everything to do with Oklahoma State's one-loss season in 2011 and their current #18 ranking. Any more excuses whole you are at it?

Keep fighting the good fight mikem. I believe it was Aristotle that said, "Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom."

That colossal failure of introspection is very telling.

Not sure how pointing out that Les Miles got that ball rolling is an excuse for anything. And you might want to go back and look at the time line of alleged payments at OSU... hint... Gundy was also the coach at that time.

It is a good day when mike is hawk hunting.

I know that you are mocking me. And that is fine sir (congrats on the birth of your child btw). But there are real and genuine reasons for what is happening. Many are the fault of the coaching staff, no doubt. But we got killed on the recruiting trail for TWO years (the first two years of the program where you start building, and where the locker room videos would have been effective)

But you know, people on here doing nothing but ripping the team and the players, does no good. Nothing is going to happen until December or later.

I choose to root for the kids, and look for the new guys to have the game slow down for them as the season winds down.

Les Miles did not leave a stocked cupboard for Gundy to play with, and if you recall, Gundy did not find immediate success. This was not a Chizik-esque "roll into town and win with someone else's guys and then burn the program down" scenario. And yes, Gundy was there during the miles years, so he ought to get some credit even if you accept that Miles "got the ball rolling" for him (you have not convicted me yet).

Also, what is your point with all of this, and how does it discredit my assertion that not everybody needs 6 years or more to put together a winning season?

I can understand why this year would push someone over the edge.

Even though there have been far worse periods of time for ISU, it could push one over the edge to feel like it finally might be the time we take that step beyond sucking, the fans are more on board than ever, and the program has more money than ever... only for us to be the same old cyclones.
THIS !!!!!!

Yeah, we probably all should have applied some critical thinking...just because we sold a bunch of tickets, doesn't automatically make us good....also IState didn't get more money in a "vaccuum". everybody that we compete with got more money as well. Just ride it out..plan, execute, measure, correct. and before you call me out for being pollyannish, i'm as down as anyone....there will definately need to be correction in the offseason.

THANK YOU for this. Wonderful response to this entire thread. I at times envy the success of the Goliath's, but can't say I could ever be a fan. (unless in my lifetime the Clones somehow become one!)

It's not the fact that CPR doesn't deserve a few down seasons, but the fact that these teams aren't even competetive is alarming to some. It's not that this team is just young and inexperienced, they don't appear to be near the athletes as the teams we are playing. The coaching staff under CPR seems to be in shambles. The football marketing propaganda machine has made this program way better than the actual product on the field. This is all to familiar to some.

Back to the mac one deep teams?
