I'm with you on this. I think everyone has fallen for the "Klenakis created Collin Kapernick from a pile of sticks" line and doesn't actually look at the fact that Ault was behind that. If you look at what Sturdy did with marginal talent at WSU, it's more impressive and IMO fits better with what we have to work with, at least this year. I think we need to put aside the "Run the damn FOOTBAWL" talk for the year because i just don't see that being feasible with the line we currently have.
I'm not huge on nit picking at play calling, after all, these coaches are professionals at what they do. However, I had a lightbulb moment when it was 4th and 4 and there was a bubble screen called which resulted in the ball being thrown two yards behind the LOS. I've coached football, heck, I have a minor in coaching, but I'm not professing to be smart enough to call plays at even a high school level. I do, however, believe that there were some head scratching plays called.
I think the big issue is a defensive coach in Rhoads trying to figure out how to build a winning offense at a program that doesn't match up talent-wise, plays in a bad weather stadium, and has to deal with Iowa, who isn't good, but they have kind of limited ISU's choice in styles, I think.
He wants to go spread cause of the talent issue, and wants to run cause of the weather at Trice (at least I think that's it), but can't pull a bunch a good linemen with Ferentz at Iowa. Tough situation, but I think he is still actively trying to figure it out. Best solution for the offense may just be to chuck it and pray for mild weather. I don't know.
I'd like to see them use the bye week to get Sturdy up to speed on calling plays. Rhoads is obviously unhappy. I kind of wish I could listen in on the mess that is going on in those headsets during these games...

I think there should be another category to this poll that reads: "Keep Messingham to the end of the season, then let him go." At this point there would have to be a nearly flawless Big 12 season for him to preserve any chance of staying with the Cyclones as OC.
Needs to be demoted. He just really doesn't seem to know what he is doing when it comes to play calling. You know it's bad when us fans are telling him what we think he should be doing. Another problem is that we are probably correct.
Its so hard to say because last year our quarterbacks were the worst we've had since 2003 and hardly ever threw and accurate pass. This year its hard to say because 1) the season just started 2) we're inexperienced 3) our best offensive player got injured at probably the 2nd most important offensive position and other injuries: Brun, Lalk, Tuftee. But, I don't think we should have looked as bad on offense as we have. I think maybe give him the rest of the year to work on things or demote him if things continue to be awful.
I expected the WRs to be the worst group position on offense, yet they've been the best. That said, Sturdy should be calli the plays.
I've been in the corporate world for 20 years now. If there is one thing I' e learned from this, about 15% of the people that are getting paid to do a job, have no business doing that job. This goes from lowest rung employee to top executive. There are just some people that have been able to talk and schmooze their way into a position. I whole heartedly believe that this also happens in the coaching ranks as well. I believe that Mess is one of these guys that talks a good game, but couldn't win one if you gave it to him on a plate. I hope I'm proven wrong, but if I had an employee who's performance was this bad for two years. He'd have his walking papers.

Really, the first two plays against Iowa were enough to convince me he should just be gone. You take the opening kickoff and then try to attack Iowa at their absolute strongest point on defense???? I am not a OC, or a coach, but that screams, "I have no clue what I am doing, and I didn't bother to look at Iowa's first two games, I have this play list from last year that worked on Iowa, it should still be good."

There needs to be a "not sure". He is obviously on thin ice with me, but until we have some semblance of blocking, I'm not sure how you can evaluate the play calling.
While I'm clearly not a Messingham fan, firing him right now won't make the offense any better IMO. I'd say give him another 2-3 games to see if he can make any improvements to the offense. If he can't, then promote someone as interim OC. If they prove to be much more effective, look at them as the permanent solution in 2014. If not, go outside the program and find someone. What is Mangino donig right now?
Cutting him now doesn't do anything to change where we are at as an offense, but at the end of the season CPR needs to take a long look at the offense.
