MLB: Theo: FIX THE BULLPEN!!!!

Yeah, and if they win those games, they're over .500 by a fair bit. 31-24.

If. There isn't a bullpen in the country that hasn't lost a game yet, so that's a pretty big if (every bullpen except Oakland's has lost at least 4 games). As another poster pointed out, it's part of the game. 8 losses by relievers is actually better than most teams.

I agree that in the long run, this year's bullpen is irrelevant. But there are pieces out there that are better, and don't require any kind of major investment. Marmol is one of the top 5 paid relief pitchers in baseball, just behind guys like Rivera. Trading off nearly $10 million and picking up a guy for a $1-2 million dollar deal that performs better is a pretty good deal and helps keep fans interested by making the team more competitive now, and it doesn't interfere with the club's long-term vision.

I'm with you on the general thoughts.

I'm not sure I'd agree on the trade. Would depend on the pieces I guess.

What I don't understand is why don't we at least make the adjustment to stop trotting Marmol out there.

Regardless I'm heading to the Friendly Confines on Friday. They have a great record while I'm there so expect good things. Unfortunately it's my only trip to there this year - well to see the Cubs at least - Pearl Jam in July.

Exactly. Which is why I look at the blown saves. I believe the Cubs have blown 11 saves and have 10 actual saves. If you convert even half of those blown saves to actual saves (which isn't unrealistic IMO), the team is above .500. But no way should they be 31-24 like tm3308 says.

I just yelled **** as loudly as I could and turned the tv off. Dunno why I care when clearly they aren't trying to win.

I was thinking about bumping this thread again as well. That was a truly brutal outing by Marmol.

A 3 run lead with no one on base, facing the 5-6-7 hitters of the third worst scoring team in the NL, and he still couldn't get the job done. He got ONE out and it was a freaking sacrifice.

Poor Matt Garza. Pitched 7 shutout innings and has to sit and watch this clown whiz it away.

It is a bit frustrating to see the Cubs play some pretty good games and then seen the relievers mess it up. Marmol is a big problem. Why do they even play the guy? Agree with other poster that this is not the year and that we play to the All Star break and sell off some of the best pieces for younger players and prospects. You do this a few more years and you have a very solid farm system to feed the team and then spend money on talent.

The bullpen blew another game last night, this time it was James Russell giving up 2 runs in less than an inning of work. Travis Wood has had 15 quality starts out of his 16 total starts, but comes away with another no decision to go with his 5-6 record.

Tell me about it. Wood's on my fantasy team and that dude can't buy a god damn W this year thanks to the Cubs bullpen.

Russell, IMO, is entitled to having an off night every now and then. He pitches great about 90% of the time. Some of the other guys never seem to pitch well out of the pen.

THIS. Im not even sure I blame the bullpen anymore for this ****. Dale needs to pull his head out of his *** when his bullpen is pitching and realize when a guy has it, and when a guy does not. Russell gave up 3 extra base hits before he was pulled last night, and after pitching 2.1 innings, Blake Parker should of been pulled after issuing the first walk in the 10th. Dale sticks with his bullpen usually 1-3 batters to long, and its no wonder the bullpen has zero confidence.

Kind of surprised the Mariners sent Ibanez home there. With the way Russell has pitched the last 2 days, I would of held him at 3rd and waited for the next inevitable base hit.

Bullpen is working on blowing this game right now. Had a 7-2 lead, now it's 7-6. Shawn Camp has given up 3 here in the 8th without getting an out, and he's still in there.
