MLB: Theo: FIX THE BULLPEN!!!!

The cubs literally have like 2 talented guys in the pen, Sveum doesn't stand a chance regardless of how well he manages his ****** bullpen.

Someone actually traded for Marmol. Good luck Dodgers.

In other Cubs news, the firesale has started.

Baltimore Orioles acquire Scott Feldman in deal with Chicago Cubs - ESPN Chicago
Strop, 28, has struggled this season, going 0-3 with a 7.25 ERA in 29 relief appearances. The hard-throwing right-hander was Baltimore's primary setup man last season, when he posted a 2.44 ERA in 70 games.

Once considered a top prospect, the 27-year-old Arrieta went 1-2 with a 7.23 ERA in five starts this season. The right-hander owns a 5.46 ERA in 69 games -- 63 starts -- over parts of four seasons with Baltimore.
They traded for junk in return? Who is the guy running the lunatic house?

A 34 year old middle reliever and a 27 year old below average pitcher. notimpressed.gif

A steaming turd in exchange would still be considered a win for the Cubs

This. They were lucky to get anything in return. Heck, a couple weeks ago the Cubs' GM Jed Hoyer said as far back as last August there was no trade market at all for Marmol.

He personally let a horrible hitter jack a homerun to win it? What else could he do? Not defending his whole year, he's been pretty awful....just that last night might have been a case of horrid luck.

Ya, I don't really understand blaming Dale for last night. At some point, your best relievers just have to perform.

I understand the criticism a bit. He left a lefty specialist out there to face a rhb who hits lefties much better than righties.

The guy was a terrible hitter overall, so I somewhat understand why he left him out there but in that situation with men on base, you gotta play the odds and bring in a righty.

When did Russell become a LOOGY?

He's always been one. The fact that the Cubs have a crappy bullpen and misuse him doesn't change that.

Here's his splits this year:

James Russell 2013 Pitching Splits - Baseball-Reference.com

Right handers are hitting .327 off him with 2 homers 7 walks and 8 strikeouts

left handers are hitting .185 off him with 0 homers 3 walks and 19 strikeouts

Eh, that's too small of a sample size for me. Russell is definitely worse against RHH than LHH but he's not as bad as those numbers show.

The past three years LHH has a .711 OPS against him and RHH has an .836 OPS. I still trust him more against RHP than I do anyone else in the bullpen other than Parker and Gregg, did I just say that? In an ideal world, Russell probably isn't used against RHP nearly as much as he is now but we aren't in an ideal world right now and with what the bullpen looks like right now, I don't think he's being misused at all. He just hasn't pitched very well lately, whether it be against RHH or LHH.

Taking Blake Parker out of the game after getting 2 straight batters to pop out was dumb. I get trying to go for the match-up against Reddick, but why in the hell is Dale concerned about Reddick. The guy has like 3 homers and 25 RBI's. The worst thing that can happen is Parker gives up the homer and the game is tied, and it pretty unlikely that Parker would give up a homer when he has only given up one this season.

So anyways, OK, put Russell in for the lefty-lefty matchup, fine. However, with the way Russell has pitched his last few outings, he should be on a short leash. With that short leash, when you walk the first guy you face, a guy that you were brought into face because of the matchup, you should be taken out of the game. Just my two cents.
