OK, here's my harebrained scheme.

Hire Scott Frost as OC/WR coach. He's a young up and coming guy and could hoppefully inject some of the Oregon run first spread into our offensive scheme.

Move Messingham back to TE's since Scott will be in charge of WRs.

Give Luke Wells his walking papers so we can hire a QB coach with ties to the state of Texas for recruiting. No clue who that would be though.

Not really about that. I just don't get this talk on the board that "he was on the way out anyway".
If its true that he is going to be QB coach, I see it very easily. I agree if he's going to be OC then he likely wasn't pushed out (or Ohio State just made a terrible hire).

I don't think you give Messingham the OC because he is the Special Teams coach and is doing a great job with them and I don't want to see the Special Teams fall off.

The speed of the hire (if true) might prove that he was nudged out, and that Herman is going to be QB coach.

I figure the guys at the BigTen Network would have good sources. Could be wrong.

Gene Smith says he's a candidate for OC:

"Smith also confirmed on Friday that Iowa State assistant Tom Herman would be joining Meyer's staff as quarterbacks coach and would be a candidate to also serve as offensive coordinator."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/sport...e-recruiting/2011/12/09/gIQAdol6hO_story.html

So that, to me makes tons of sense. Herman is smart to take the QB job, not with the promise of being named OC, but with the possibility. That's a gamble worth taking: if it doesn't pay off (i.e. Meyer gets another OC), he's got a good paying position for a famous coach. Yes, he loses the OC opportunity at ISU, and takes a step back in duties.

But if it does pay off, it most certainly is a prestigious promotion with the opportunity to Jet the stuffing out of the strong and stable but slow and gassable defenses of the Big 10.

This sort of "mixed dealing" is the arrangement I've been wondering about, and trying to get a clue on since this was rumored.

That would be the missing piece (if true) that makes it all make sense.

Don't like this...but I'll accept it and hope for the best.
I don't understand it either. We were finally starting to develop some continuity and now we don't renew his contract? If that is true, (could be a long shot it is) than we probably made a mistake, especially if the guy were are bringing in is Tony Franklin.

Interesting. PR says maybe you need to look around, TH then makes it known in coaching circles he is looking. Hits jackpot at OSU.

My sense is that the relationship between PR and TH was ok, but not great. Just a lot of odd little comments over the last couple years. Nothing major, just hints at dissatisfaction. PR didn't speak about TH as glowingly as he did about Wally either.

Gotta like this...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Franklin_(coach)

On February 5, 2009, Franklin was hired to fill the vacant position of offensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee State University. He replaced G.A. Mangus, who left MTSU to become the quarterbacks coach at South Carolina under his college coach Steve Spurrier.

Under Franklin's tutelage, the Blue Raiders offense improved from 7th in the conference in scoring before his arrival (and 84th in the nation) to 2nd in the conference his first season (and 23rd in the nation). Despite a losing record the year prior, MTSU finished the regular season with a 9-3 record including a win over the Maryland from the Atlantic Coast Conference (the lone conference loss came at Troy)

Can you explain your comments here? I agree with continuity but Franklin runs a very similar system, in fact a system that our current starting QB ran in high school. Franklin has been successful everywhere he's been except Auburn where it wasn't fair to him. Herman, has struggled every year at ISU except for about the last 6 games of this season where things finally started clicking.

My guess is that TH will be the QB coach with "co-offensive coordinator" distinction. I sincerely doubt Urban would hire TH for OC.

I don't get why Herman's contract wasn't renewed after the improvement the offense showed the last six games. I would understand it more if we knew we were getting a huge improvement at OC but it looks like more of the same and a guy who hasn't succeeded at the BCS level. I'm sure Franklin will do fine but we already knew Herman was improving and he was more of a known commodity. Herman was also an alright recruiter for us and it doesn't look like Franklin has much of a recruiting base.

Fired after 6 games = Not given the chance to succeed.

His program for OC's is taught throughout Texas by him (now that he's at a lower school). That sounds like contacts with Texas coaches to me.
