In-state FB recruiting

Nothing is official until the LOI is signed. But somebody said one thing that wasn't even bad about the hawks, and you still saw your bat signal, and had to come running to be a ****.

As far as in-state recruiting, it's a down year. But, I have seen Hill play, and he is a hard worker. If he doesn't get hurt, he will maximize his talents because of his work ethic.

I have never been one to worry about in state kids anyways. I watched too many UNI recruits play for mac the mediocre so he could spin how many instate kids he had on the roster. At this point, we aren't going to beat iowa for most any instate kid. We need to make this a destination. But that happens with winning.

I agree that Mac did go overboard at times. And that ended up killing his depth. I'm sure that the goal is to beat iowa on every recruit that ISU wants, but I'd settle for 50/50 or even 40/60. In the end, there's usually only 3-4 players that both schools offer. The past 5 years, ISU has gotten pretty much none of those...even with offering earlier. Guys like Sash and Angerer, ISU offered well in advance of KF only to see them hold out for and accept the iowa offer. ISU needs to get some of those guys. It seems to me like they are on the way to doing that. They beat iowa for preferred walk-ons Boesen and Peters this year and Woody before that. Now they have Hill sticking with his commitment (so far at least) after iowa offered. We'll see if Rogers eventually gets an iowa offer or Malloy gets an ISU offer. I personally don't think that Seeley would go to iowa over ISU even if they offer.

To me, ISU has the more personable, player-friendly coach. As KF's tenure winds down, they're going to have to take advantage of that and win some of the battles.

I agree with the need to win these battles. The problem, and you cited two examples with Sash and Angerer, is that you have to make kids go against their lifelong allegence to the hawks to get them to come here. That is especially true if they are being strung along by the iowa coaching staff while they wait to see if they get their prime targets.

Mac was able to take away a lot of the kids that would have walked on at iowa. But, he was only able to recruit a handful of kids that the hawks truly wanted. But the biggest problem was that we were offering scholarships to a lot of kids that should have been preferred walkons here, instead of taking schollys at UNI, kind of a trickle down effect that didn't work well because UNI has been a very successful program at the FCS level, and remains a good option for Iowa kids.

There is no way on God's green earth that a coach at a school for 12 years should have left a program in the shape that mac did. Much of that had to do with the lack of solid recruiting.

As far as CPR goes, I agree, he is has a great passion, and love for the job that he has. Now, will he ever be able to win enough to get the attention of many of the kids, that we will be talking about in future years, and make them choose Iowa State rather than end up here because they did not get a scholly at iowa? If he can do this, then there will be some good seasons in the future.

I will definitely agree with that. Iowa has had plenty of 2 and 3 star guys that have ended up getting drafted into the NFL. In this draft alone they had 6 people drafted with 4 of them being 3 stars or less.

Hill won't tell CW anything other than he's rock solid to ISU. Even if he isn't.
 
Times are a changin. Kirky's time in IC is winding down. CPR's time in Ames is ramping up.

The life cycle of football in this state is at a point where CPR is the "new product" and his value is on the upswing and Kirky is the "existing product" with a value that is stable but nearing end of life. CPR just needs to keep the big Mo going and that tide will continue to turn in favor of ISU.

I respectfully disagree. We keep waiting for Kirk to leave but he doesn't. If he hasn't left by now why would he? Not that is matters that much; I think all PR has to do is win and recruiting will be just fine.

Kirk's coordinators are nearing end of life without question. His staff stability is going to be shook up real soon. Iowa has bread success in this state because of its staff's stability IMO. That is going to change very soon.

CPR starts winning a few games against Iowa (hopefully starting this year) and has even moderate success in the new B12 and it's a whole new ballgame real quick.

I, for one, believe that is what will happen and is already happening.

Mac ran the gamut for Iowa kids. He did bring in plenty that should have been going to UNI or preferred walk-ons. He also found some good players that were overlooked, like Moser, Bruns, Frere, Avey, Rosenfels, Mike Banks, Lamaak. Not to mention that his walk-on program was better than Chizik's or Rhoads' (so far) with Danielsen, Carstens, Whitver, Jessie Smith, Moorehead. But to say that he only beat iowa for a handful of players is underselling him a little...Marsau, DeRonde, Zehr, Schrage, Brant, Blythe, Arnaud, Milan Moses, Ben Barkema, James Smith off the top of my head.

I don't really believe that there are tons of kids with "lifelong allegences" to either school. I'm sure most everyone on the eastern side of the state roots for iowa. But that doesn't mean that they dislike ISU. If you take ISU out of the equation and put in Purdue...would a kid from Dubuque take a Purdue offer over iowa? Well, it depends on a lot of things....the current state of the program, the educational opportunities, the relationship with the coaching staffs, facilities, etc. I fully believe that if they were forced to declare, 2/3 of the state (that are sports fans) would say they are iowa fans. But that doesn't mean that they are die-hards or that they hate ISU. So what I'm saying is that just because a kid grew up rooting for iowa, it doesn't mean that ISU can't win a recruiting battle.

Yeah, in all honesty, ISU has more to gain vs a KF near the end of his tenure than whatever new guy they bring in, who I'm sure will have the world's biggest hype fest behind him. I do believe that KF will leave iowa in two years. His son has two years left of eligibility and unfortunately for iowa fans, his youngest son isn't much of a talent. I think that after the ties that his kids have to IC are cut, KF will try his hand at coaching in the NFL.

I want to believe this; I assume you're referring to Norm Parker's health and I agree Norm is pushing retirement but I wouldn't be surprised if Iowa promoted the DC from within therefore keeping the continuity of staff intact. I don't see KOK going anywhere; if KF was going to cut him loose he'd have done it by now, imo. I don't think KF will fool with a strong selling point which is the longest tenured core coaching group in the Big Ten.

It seems like you're assuming it would be on KF's terms. Imo, for a guy like Kirk you have to strike while the irons hot; A good fit opens up in the NFL after a great season for Iowa. Those are two things that won't necessarily happen in two years.

I don't believe that. I think that he could get a pro job after going 6-6. He has a track record, so I don't think that teams would just go by the prior season. Also, the NFL goes crazy for anyone in the Billichek tree. Now I feel dirty for talking about them too much.
 
How did this get to be a debate about Iowa? Isn't that supposed to be in the Instate Rivals forum? I look in here for instate recruiting, and you guys are talking nothing of the sort!
