New FB Commit

Gotta love that almost immediately after finding out this kid commits, fans start saying he's too slow, move him to TE, hope we can hang on to him...etc.

Imagine if our coaches had this much anxiety about recruiting. We'd never get a commit.

FWIW, 4.65 is plenty fast. Watch the NFL combine sometime.

Let me get this straight...did we just get a commit from a Texas top 100 (damn near top 50) kid in May? Holy crap...

This class is shaping up to be the best class ever at ISU...and I don't think that is being dramatic at all.

Didn't the '02 or '03 class have something like 4-5 4-star guys? Granted, I don't think most of them panned out, but rankings wise I seem to remember that being our "best" class.

actually, if I remember correctly, last year was our best class in overall star rating according to rivals

Yeah, just the way that Barkley Hill is a four star. Wait. High three star. Wait... :skeptical:

Let's not get carried away here. Chickens before they're hatched, and all that.

Seriously, with a little work, I'd guess that Quan could improve his speed to, say, Jerry Rice type speed. Either that, or he grows to be a good tight end. Nice snag here.

2002 we had 6 4 star recruits according to Rivals. Unfortunately, only 2 ever did much. Flynn and Hicks. Colin Menard wasn't bad, I guess.

Great get! Especially this early.

I wonder if the new Big 12 schedule helped landing him at all. Playing 2 games every year in Texas certainly can't hurt our recruiting in BEVO's back yard.

As great as it is to see 4-stars considered or offered by the staff, I'm completely fine w/getting a bunch of under the radar or low star guys who actually fit the system, want to be in Ames, work their ***** off, trust & listen to the coaching staff, represent State in the right way & win a bunch of freaking games.

Realistically, I'm sure our staff isn't sitting around checking out Rivals or Scout to find guys to offer, they see what they need, evaluate the talent pool available, talk to people, watch film, scrimmages, etc & make decisions for what they think a kid can bring to the program. As has been represented the past couple years, the staff is doing a fantastic job of getting what they want/need to continue building success!

Makes you wonder why Western Michigan was the only other school to offer him (according to scout)

Theres only so many scholarships to go around across the nation?
120 D1 programs multiplied by roughly 25 scholarships each equals about 3,000 kids nationwide that will sign a LOI next February. Granted the SEC increases that number by about 10 per team  Only 3,000 across the nation can go play some form of major college football.

Theres no way in hell every good Texas HS prospect can be recruited, let alone even be identified by a lot of major BCS programs. Especially to those that don't play in the region or don't have much for strong recruiting ties inside Texas. If Texas alone has 1,000 really great HS prospects, theres just not room for them to all find scholarships. Same with Florida. Some will have to go play for Idaho, Troy, or Western Michigan.

Texas and ATM are obviously the major players in state, and they typically have most of their class full by this time of year. They most certainly have pull in any corner of that state, and can identify any great player much easier than Wisconsin, or Alabama, or Washington.....or whoever else.

And out come the arm chair recruiters and coaches. Unless stated otherwise about the staffs intentions, I'm under the impression he will be a WR, if he can be as productive as Hamilton was and find open spots in the defense I'd be happy. Pretty excited for the under the radar signing.

Also, ISU is doing the recruiting work for schools like TTU and Baylor. We identify the Texas talent and they try to poach them. Boomer says this kids a good get and I agree. This kid will absolutely be recruited by other BCS teams going forward.

If you are going to take that position, why would you say that? The staff has said nothing about him being a wide receiver. For all we know, they're sitting in the office chortling about getting an excellent defensive end!

For that matter, I'm reasonably sure that the staff isn't gazing into crystal balls to see just how Quan will grow and develop physically over the next couple of years. So, please forgive those of us on a message board that speculate a bit about what the future might hold.

Going over your last couple of posts, I have a question. Have ever you ever heard of a posession receiver? This kid fits that mold perfectly. A guy you can put on the outside and go up and get balls. He is exactly what ISU needs at the WR position.

A supposed 4.65 40 time doesn't mean a damn thing.

Hes really not that slow for his size.. also 40 times aren't ran on the field in your football gear on so I'm not too concerned about that anyways. Plenty of "slow" guys have become far better receivers than most of the "fast" guys.

I know we didn't get him over many big name schools, but I love that Western Michigan is on the list. They are becomming WR U in the Mac and have produced 2 all conference WRs each of the last 4 years (with a little help from Former Cyclone Coach Mike Grant, who I always had a lot of respect for concidering he recruited and coached our 2 best receivers IMO in school history). Both the Seniors from last years WR corp at WMU were close to getting drafted but fell just short like Collin. To me that says a lot about getting Quan. I think he is a very, very solid pickup and look forward to very good things.
