It looks like Cyclones.com has updated the player weights. Unfortunately a few guys have shrunk. Nelson is about 15 lbs smaller than last season. He is now 6-1 and 235 lbs. Why is it so hard for us to find decent sized DE's? Cleyon Laing is listed at DE, maybe that is our plan to get a little size on the outside. He is up to 282 lbs.

The other player that lost some significant weight that is concerning is Brayden Burris. He is back down to 276 lbs. Hopefully he can put some back on by next fall. I think he weighed about that last spring but was listed at 290 lbs by August.

Hopefully KO at 354 is impressive.

Klein and Knott at 243 and 244 will be the largest LB combo that we have ever had.

Benton is up to 207 which might indicate a move to safety. I think he was 197 lbs last year.

I wouldnt say that those linemen losing weight is a problem. Looks like the coaches identified what would make them more explosive and quick.

Ill take a 235 DE anyday, if he can motor.

You are right. AJK and Knott will be imposing.

heck yeah,,, AJK, and Knott are going to tear things up.

Depends on the reason behind the weight changes, some guys can be more explosive at a lighter weight and sometimes you can slow a guy down and make him less effective if the weight gain isn't mostly muscle mass.

If Lattimer is still with the team providing depth, then im not too worried about Nelson's weight loss. When they Clones are short-handed and undersized things go bad.

By mid season Knott, and Klein were attacking offenses instead of reacting. Nelson dropping weight may be a sign that Rhoads and Burnham, are about to start attacking the opposing teams QB's more. Perhaps they want more quickness on the ends, because they know that K&K can identify plays quickly, and will clean up any messes.

Will Matt take the MLB spot back? He's built bigger than Knott and Klien... That would be a huge LB core.

Rony Nelson comes off a redshirt season and everybody around our program is anxious to see what he can do. He’s had offseason surgery to remove a bone spur and we want to make sure we get him back healthy for spring ball.

Looks like Rony had some surgery which might explain the weight loss. If that is the case then I look to him to getting it back on by start of the season.

Well you might be right, but i bet we play 6/7 teams this year who have DE that are 260 and can motor. You can't teach size.

You can train size, as in weight train. The only problem is with Th 6-1 frame there are restrictions, look at RParker, great kid but IMO was at his ideal weight for frame Fresh/sophomore year. After that he got too slow. I really look forward to Irving being the long awaited DE we havE always wanted, 6-7or8 already at 250+.... I see brigh future there...

Last fall, CPR, during one of his call-in shows, said the staff has a minimum height target for recruiting defensive ends: 6-foot-3. All things in time, I guess. . . .

Cleyon Laing is listed at DE, maybe that is our plan to get a little size on the outside. He is up to 282 lbs.

Must have been a cyclones.com error; I just looked at the pre-spring depth chart and he's in the middle, not outside. Also, CPR in his DL interview referred to him as an interior D-lineman.

Noticed that of the 11 guys listed on the pre-spring DE/DL depth chart, nine return in 2012.

And, here comes linebacker Jevohn Miller, too! He's grown in height and weight since his commitment was first announced and is listed at 6-4, 236 pounds.

Oops, now I see he's listed at 6-foot-3, but still 236 pounds. Not bad for a high school kid (yeah, I know he's an early enrollee at ISU) who can standing leap over a four-foot-high box (CPR video comment; it was four feet, wasn't it?)

From what I've seen in Millers video he looks like an athletic freak. He really does remind me of Knott. Once he figures out the LB position on a collegiate level, I think he will be special.

I seem to remember the coaches saying last fall that Nelson was actually a lot smaller then they originally thought. He was listed at 6'2" 250 but actually came in about 20 pounds lighter and a few inches shorter. Same deal with Floyd Mattison who is now listed at 5'10" 200 lbs...much smaller then his high school profile.

Why do I get the feeling that Mattison will never do much in his career here?

Like somoene said... you can't teach size... and Mattison doesn't have it. Hamlin didn't have it either... and never was going to get it... and now he's gone.

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm just stating my opinion. I love being proven wrong though!

I wouldn't lose hope on Mattison just yet. From what I've read he has alot of speed and if he can somewhat cover he would be an ideal SS. On a positive note, Jeremiah George is at 5'11 222. I can see him at 235 by his senior year and just being a force.

If Jevohn Miller is really that big and picks up on the defensive schemes somewhat well, I would like to see him play some DE. Especially, if we don't see Lattimer on the field. I wasn't that concerned with DE with Lattimer and Maggitt, but without Lattimer, that unit will struggle.

Yeah, there's a difference between Hamlin and Mattison. Mattison, by all accounts, has exceptional speed. He may never get up to Big12 linebacker size, but if he picks up the schemes he could do well as out hybrid in the nickel.

Correct. If Mattison wants to play here, he'll have to be a Terran Benton type hybrid player IMO. I don't think he'll ever be an every down LB in the Big 12.
