Standing for the Whole Game

This is the best comment I've read on this thread. It acknowledges that some people prefer to stand and some prefer to sit, but organizes it in a way that is likely to help our team and challenges us to be truly intelligent fans who know how cheering relates to our team's performance. The big idea is what is best fot the team!

In years past, our basketball fans were renowned for being some of the "smartest" fans because they knew how to relate their cheering to the dynamics of the game. That is Hilton Magic.[/QUOTE

Have to agree as well. As far as designated sections: maybe they could sell tickets (starting with the endzone moving toward the 50 - depending on demand) that are designated as "standing" seats. In other sections, stand and cheer as the situation warrants or as the spirit moves you, but be respectfull of those around you.

Between this...about 'Sweet Caroline, "Another Cyclone first down" cheer, the wave, what the band plays during the game....it is really incredible our fanbase needs to find something to whine about the gameday experience.

This need to pout desires to be fed....

Wow. Lots of passion in this discussion.

A quiet, sitting fan is still a million times better than an empty seat. As long as they're a Cyclone fan and supporting the team in their own way, why ruin the experience for them and drive them away?

Especially if they are a $10k+ donor!

Haha I was just thinking about this, we get a quality win over a good NIU team and that's not enough to keep the ******** at a minimum for at least a couple days? Pretty depressing. For God's sake football season is back, this is the happiest time of the year.

I also disagree with the thought that a continuously loud crowd ruins the 12th man effect. I'd like to see JTS loud and then get louder for key plays...not quiet and then loud for key plays.[/QUOTE]

As the only one who I think has tried to make the case for the variation in loudness as being a more effective 12th man, note that I didn't say that it ruins the effect. In some ways, it enhances the effect, but not over the course of the game. Going from sitting and not so loud to standing and deafening loud can have a dramatic impact (both positive for us and negative for the opponent). I think the current emphasis on standing for the whole game is mostly about people who like to stand as their way of cheering for their team, not carefully thought out strategy for how to be the most effective 12th man.

I wonder if anyone else has experienced games where variation in standing and loudness has affected the outcome.

I think it is a large part of Hilton Magic.

I can't believe there are 8 pages of posts on this stupid subject, yet, here I am posting. I simply stand when I feel like it, usually in a third down critical situation, and sit when I feel like it. If fans in front of me are standing, I don't care either way, I then stand long enough to see the next play, then sit if I feel the need.

Move on.

This is what I have been doing for years. However, I sense the trend to stand the whole game is growing. The standees are winning!

And while some are rather selfish, I think mostly they just want to cheer for the team. I would just like them to be more intelligent about it so that it truly helps the team (and doesn't hurt the team).

Wow, I cant believe how angry people are AT OTHER CYCLONE FANS. Do you ever think that people stand becuase that's just their style of cheering and not just to make you feel like they are better than you.

I stand because honestly I love the game so much that I am literally too excited to sit down. I don't do it all the time but there are many times during the game that I realize that I am standing and didn't even remember standing up (this even happens when I am sober). I try to look behind me in these times to see if I am annoying someone and if I am I sit back down but I cant guarantee that I'm not going to stand back up later. Last year at the bowl game I stood almost the whole time and nobody else in my section did. Luckily I had a aisle seat so I slid over so that I wasn't standing directly in front of me. Unfortunately at JTS that isn't possible for me.

I try to be respectful of eveyone at the game but at the end of the day I am just excited to be at the game because I love football and I LOVE THE CYCLONES!!!!!

This describes me exactly. I had tickets on the west side the last few seasons and I heard "sit down" several times through out the season when I was on that side of the stadium. I would then look around and realize people were talking to me and I didn't even realize I was standing. I get so into the game I don't even know what my body is doing. I also can't talk for a couple days after games. I don't stand to make others stand or to seem tough. I literally can't stay sitting.

They stand for the entire game at Soccer games in Europe. You're telling me we aren't tough enough to stand like those Euros? We're Americans for cryin' out loud. We should be doing jumping jacks for 3 hours...

How about the horns at soccer games? Which would be more effective at Jack Trice? 10,000 people blowing horns all the time. Or a few guys blowing horns at significant times (like they now do)? 10,000 blowing horns is louder, but I don't think it is better in terms of rallying the crowd around them to cheer in a particular way at a particular point in the game for a particular purpose.

It is all about being intelligent and strategic, not just cheering the way you want.

Indeed, the most important thing is to celebrate the win and the prospect for the season. I apologize if the thread I started took away from that. I started the thread because my feet hurt and I thought it would be good to talk about how we should go about cheering for our team.

And while some of the thread has been whiny, there has also been substantive conversation about what other teams do and how we can best cheer our team to help them win.

We have to get past the "we must stand up or we are not fans" mentality. And we can only allow knitters who are also big donors!

FYI, I especially enjoyed this game because most of my high school friends went to Northern Illinois. I would gladly endure painful feet to watch us beat them soundly!

If there was a poll to each of the Iowa State players and coaches they would certainly want the crowd to stand and be as loud as possible for the entire game. I will do my part to help the team. Sitting down won't work for me.

Well of course they are. If the general trend were people talking louder and louder, if you are the person that is quiet you will either not be heard or you will talk louder. This is just about survival. I am not going to influence others to sit BECAUSE I'm sitting, but I can influence those around me to stand if I stand. I hope my point is getting through. You have three choices if somebody is standing:
-Stand with them.
-Yell at them to sit down. (Most don't like conflict, especially with fellow fans)
-Sit and not see.

I stand at big plays and try to get others to stand with me on third downs.(Section 13). But I am 6' 3" and 270, if I stand, most of the people behind me can't see. It was a problem when we moved from our East side seats to where we are now. I was yelled at for standing too much and after realizing that I was keeping others from watching the game, I realized that I was being a jerk. Noise hurts the offense, hence why we get loud on defense. So if you are saying to be loud by standing, what benefit to the team are you doing by standing while we are on offense? Jump up and be proud on good plays or first downs!

We are trending down on season tickets? Is it the product on the field? Is it the whole game experience? Is it the economy? I don't know the answer, but I tend to lean on the experience you have at the game. Being a ******* on either side of this issue will only hurt ticket sales.

Me, Me, Me, is where our society is headed. It was pointed out many times in this thread. Should be interesting to see how a socialistic government will work with our self-indulgent population. My guess, not very well. Give ME MY entitlements!

Not when we're on offense. T

I have ZERO problem with you as a fan if you choose to sit.....just don't yell at me for standing. If you want to get some traction with me, be polite, tell me nicely I am obstructing your view and I will do my best to accomodate. No need to start a confrontation or yell obscenities. It's amazing what a little courtesy and a "please" will accomplish. I don't think any less of you for sitting, but don't think that means you can be a **** to those of us that want to stand.
I am conscious of those sitting behind me. I will sit here and there, but before I know it, I find myself standing again. It's just what FB brings out in me as I watch the game. I'm not trying to be an a-hole. Talk to me with courtesy instead of assuming a confrontational approach and you might be surprised at the response.

Everytime I have witnessed this in the stands, it seems the sitters just start out with the obscenities and the "sit your butt down" approach. There is no "please"...there is no common sense to addressing the individual at all. Act like a **** with your request for a stander to sit and you will get it back tenfold.
