There I definitely agree with you. However, you and I are looking at the possible repercussions of doing something as stupid as driving drunk.
I'm originally from the country and drunk drivers in the country are travelling at the sort of speeds that can lead to accidents that can end lives. Thus, that definitely colors my view of things.
A few interesting counterpoints though might include:
- Concerning the law and morality, folks often place a great emphasis on INTENT. Drunk driving is dangerous ... but it is often the product of stupidity without intent. In contrast, while stealing is stupid too ... but it is with INTENT.
- Drunk driving in-town at low speed is arguably less likely to lead to fatalities. Although it is still poor behavior, it is not as dangerous as driving faster while impaired. Similarly, driving mopeds while impaired isn't as dangerous either.
Of course, many folks tend to see these sort of issues only in black and white ... and thus get easily polarized depending on their vantage.
