David Sims charged

Oh, but as long as you don't get caught you're fine?

I swear I put this in there...

It goes without saying people shouldn't be breaking laws to begin with.

There's two different arguements. People shouldn't be breaking laws. But people should also paying for them when they do and are caught.

Like the victim said where are our role models? So happy we have guys like Arnaud and A-Rob.

I agree - and as Hoiberg said at his opening presser, it's critically important to get guys to ISU that people here can relate to. Speaking for me, I sure can't relate to someone unlawfully using a credit card. Sorry.

tm3308 -

There I definitely agree with you. However, you and I are looking at the possible repercussions of doing something as stupid as driving drunk.

I'm originally from the country and drunk drivers in the country are travelling at the sort of speeds that can lead to accidents that can end lives. Thus, that definitely colors my view of things.

A few interesting counterpoints though might include:

- Concerning the law and morality, folks often place a great emphasis on INTENT. Drunk driving is dangerous ... but it is often the product of stupidity without intent. In contrast, while stealing is stupid too ... but it is with INTENT.

- Drunk driving in-town at low speed is arguably less likely to lead to fatalities. Although it is still poor behavior, it is not as dangerous as driving faster while impaired. Similarly, driving mopeds while impaired isn't as dangerous either.

Of course, many folks tend to see these sort of issues only in black and white ... and thus get easily polarized depending on their vantage.

I agree that DD in town is not as likely to get someone hurt (unless it's a bigger town like IC where all you have to do is run a red light at 40 and hit a pedestrian). I have a friend who recently was in a wreck in the country when he was drunk. He was doing close to 100 mph on gravel, swerved and hit a field entrance. The truck flipped multiple times, and he was thrown through the windshield. The truck rolled into a family's house (actually the 2nd time that this had happened to that family). The wreck was so bad that he was actually fortunate to NOT have been wearing his seatbelt, because the cab had been totally crushed, and he would have died had he been inside.

I realize that is an extreme example, and that not all DUI's are alike. But where do we draw the line on what was a "serious" DUI, where the driver was putting others at risk? Because a .09 may not be much to somebody who is an experienced drinker who can hold his beer, but I'm guessing it would feel like a whole case to someone like me who has never drunk before. Because of variable factors like that, for discipline purposes, it's better to treat each DUI the same. You can believe that one DUI can be worse than another (which is true), but we could spend years on each DUI case trying to determine how serious it was.

Perhaps you needing to relate to athletes is the problem then.

I could give a crap less if a football player is relatable. They are 6% body fat and can bench press 400. Cut the bench at least in half and at least double the body fat for me. What's similar between me and them? We both breathe oxygen?

I enjoy his play, and, for that matter, Clayborn's play on the field. And that's all I really care about.

2 things

first of all is anyone stupid enuff to think this credit card was found laying on the ground?

second of all, I dont udnerstand how someone pursuing a degree isnt smart enuff to realize that most stores use cameras.

Our sheriff didn't turn himself in either. He got caught and then showed remorse. That is kind of the way it always is. I don't really know of anyone who turns themself in without being caught first.

How many games did your sheriff get suspended for?

Case in point, the Adrian Clayborn case and this case are really quite similar in severity of charges if DS pleads down which is expected - both will be simple misdemeanors....AC plays the entire season while the "Legal process runs its course". At ISU he would not have had the option - he would have automatically been suspended, wonder if he would have pleaded down earlier thus actually get suspended rather then not getting any suspension. Remember folks, his original charge was Assault - he got zero games suspended!!!!!

You will see, AC will not be suspended, nor will he miss any practice time. DS is already facing suspension.

So Any Hawk Fan that wants to justify the differences please do so....

!!!!

There is a pretty big difference between a simple and agrro misde. There is also a big difference between going upside a cabbies head when provoked and knowingly stealing because you wanted new shoes.

I think it's worse than driving drunk, as being a thief goes to someone's character.
and driving drunk doesn't go to your character? first you make the decision to get drunk, and then to drive away although you are drunk. you have a pretty good chance of at least injuring yourself if not kill other people. im not saying what he did wasnt stupid. it was stupid. but driving drunk would be a LOT worse than stealing a credit card

The irony of this is - Sims steals and uses a credit card...many fans think zero or 1 game suspension is perfectly fine.

Months back when Iowa FB players (and wrestlers) were getting busted for public urination, public intox, etc - KF was not coming down nearly as hard as he should have on them.

You are correct in your premise.

The problem is that Kirk has had players consistently get in trouble over his entire time there. He has removed kids from the team ONLY when not given a choice, or when they weren't important to winning.

The hypcocrisy of hawk fans is that they spend time signing up for sites of teams that they don't even care about just because they said something bad about their beloved hawks.

They also tend to be the first fanbase to throw stones at others for players getting into trouble. Their highhandedness is what makes them an easy target.

It is also why they are an incredibly unpopular group. The bowl cities love them because they bring people out of the tundra and they spend money in the city.

But nobody watches them outside of their fans. They are NOT a national program. Look at the bowl ratings when they are the headliner. They are terrible.

Now if they are playing a Florida, LSU, Texas, etc. teams that actually have national followings, then the ratings are fine. But it is clear that they are not a nationally renowned program.

They are the flavor of the year this coming season. They will have a lot of pressure on them from game one this year. It has been five years since that was the case. We will see how well they do with that.

Sapp, Douglas, Bowman, Williams, and Huntrods, among others, might beg to differ.

You are so polarized that you don't even know and/or admit the facts.

Also, when has Ferentz ever hesitated from removing a kid who was important to winning? BTW ... I'm just waiting for you to try to use Clayborn as an example.

Iowa suspended James Cleveland immediately and indefinitely after his dorm room was found to have Marajuana and prescription drugs in it. What did ISU do to Banks last year, 1 practice? Douglas and Bowman were suspended immediately after their CC case, it will be interesting to see what Rhoads does here. Your entire post is garbage, off-focus, and hippo-critical at best. What Sims did has nothing to do with Iowa. Simms getting an OWI, by blowing a .101 is not the same as stealing a CC, and then going to 4 different stores and using it. Shame on anyone who thinks so.
It's terrible that all the focus of ISU football has to be about Sims and his stupid behavior, when you have 21 other starters who have busted their a$$es to stay out of trouble and build the ISU football tradition.

I am stupid enough to know how to spell "enough," use apostrophes and the shift key. How stupid is that?

I'm not normally a grammar sheriff but when insulting peoples intelligence I will usually spell my words right and not put them in a form that makes it seem as though the poster is a 15 year old girl texting her BFF.

It is hard to compare. Iowa has been a top 5 Fulmer Cup team for several years running.

There is a lot wrong here. For one, Sims was suspended immediately. No one really knows the details of the Banks deal. Obviously, since he tested positive later, he was likely doing something wrong, but maybe there wasn't enough there the first time. I don't think he was ever charged with anything. I can't blame a coach for not suspending someone when there wasn't any police action.

And another thing: no one here is critical of hippos. In fact, we are a hippo friendly environment here at cyclonefanatic.com.
