McDermott to Creighton?

I could see this not happening, simply because of DG and Booz. With all the "integrity" talk that has gone on around here, ditching those 2 after they have stuck with you would not be the most honorable thing ever...

Jacobsen ain't leaving Northern Iowa for Creighton.

Agreed, if he hadnt signed the extension with UNI, you have to think he wouldve been high on many ADs lists this year after that KU win. If he didnt leave for any of those openings, i dont see him going to CU.

But is there any possibility that players like that would actually play for ISU anyway, at this point — even if it's "the coach, not the school" as people claim these days?

I understand the integrity thing (that is, players who haven't defected respected the coach would stay with it, and they would do the same) but I don't think it damages GM's integrity at this point. Players like that may feel betrayed, but they obviously understand there have been rocky times with this program, and if they like the coach, and an opportunity comes up, I don't think they'd hold it against him.

I think it's a completely different situation than a coach at a frequent contender courting players with the assurance he'll stay at that school, then bolting as soon as a better opportunity arises.

It would be wonderful if Creighton paid the $800,000 buyout clause in Mac's contract, but my guess is that Jaime may have to waive part or all of that to make this deal happen. Keep in mind that Jaimie just hired two new assistants and probably has $450,000 committed to those guys over the next two years. If Jaime doesn't want to move Nurse up to the head coaching position, then he needs to finance a way to pay the money that's committed to both assistants so he can hire a new head coach and that guy can bring in his own assistants. That means Jaime could be asking Creighton to pay half of the buyout clause.

Don't forget that we might also need to pay a buyout clause for our new coach. No, I think we're going to have to insist that Creighton pay the whole load. Anything less would be financial malpractice on JP's part.

I agree. There is no reason for us to negotiate on the buyout at this point.

Regardless of extension, Jacobson wouldn't be leaving UNI for Creighton - that's a lateral move at best, but considering the condition of both programs it would be a step down. If Jacobson leaves UNI it's because the big $$$ came calling - not because a conference rival talked him away from godhood status.

Even if that becomes a deal breaker? Don't forget, Creighton could be doing ISU a huge favor by allowing us to transition to a new coach immediately without having to pay Mac $2.4 million. Talk about having a nice present land in you lap!

I think Jaime has to be very careful.

Creighton's AD can't afford to look cheap when it comes to hiring GMac. If he balks at a mere $800k buyout, his fans are going to start asking "Wait a minute, if he's worth a 9 freakin' year deal at over $1 million a year, why are you dinking around on a $800k buyout".

As much as we need to get rid of GMac, the Creighton AD NEEDS to make this hire work out. He's handcuffed himself to GMac now, so right or wrong, he NEEDS to push the PR on this hire like a madman.

If the Nurse and Grayer hires were "legitimate" and not just PR moves, then there's no question Gmac will take them with him to Creighton.
If he doesn't, it's very revealing...

This is defiantly worth paying attention to. I could see the argument that Grayer would be a better recruiter to ISU than he would be CU.
Also, does McD invite Rutter?

Some interesting posts in this thread. I know some of you have already taken your words back. I'm not trying to pile on; I just thought these were funny.

I don't think Greg wants to leave a job half done. He will continue to work hard to turn around things in Ames.

And we have a new leader for most ******** thread of the week!

Let's hope this happens for the sake of ISU MBB!

We are Iowa State, we got lucky that someone hired away GC, it can't happen twice.

You are wasting your time if you put any amount of thought into thinking this could actually happen. 0% chance.

If Creighton's AD goes all Jay Jacobs on us, I'm sending him a personal thank you.

I have ALWAYS said that Coach McDermott is a great guy and I'm very high on him - I just think it's over at Iowa State. Bad fit. McDermott should jump at Creighton. Be perfect for everyone

It could be a win-win for both schools, much like the Chizik to Auburn and Alford to New Mexico deals. It probably won't happen though. If McDermott is interested, he's probably going to have to explain the defections during interview process. That might be tough to do, but then again, there is Pollard's email to help back him up.

I'll help him move if he wants. This would be a win/win for both McD and ISU. If there is a buyout needed by Creighton, ISU would probably waive it or part of it.

I would personally drive to Omaha and shake the hand of the Creighton AD if he took McDermott off our hands and ended this pathetic era of ISU BB.

more absurdist MBB fare. somebody should translate this thread into french.

Le prix de basket-ball de plus d'hommes absurdist. Quelqu'un devrait traduire ce fil dans le français.

It is interesting to see when our hires have been (from a quick google news archive search, so may be off by a day):

Johnny Orr: March 25, 1980
Floyd: May 6, 1994
Eustachy: July 29, 1998
Wayne Morgan: May 14, 2003
Greg McDermott: March 21, 2006

Does it say anything about anything? Probably not.. just interesting.

I would hope that GMac would listen, if nothing else than to hopefully improve his working conditions by going somewhere he could have an immediate impact...

But, I'm not inclined to believe that GMac is going anywhere this offseason.

OWH article on the "candidates", and yes he is on the list of 6!
Who's next in line for Jays? - Omaha.com

Very interesting from the article -

"Tension between McDermott and ISU Athletic Director Jamie Pollard grew last season, according to two Big 12 coaches with knowledge of the situation."

I heard the tension went like this:

JP-- "You have to start winning games, we have been terrible."
McD-- "Ok so fire me...oh wait, you can't, because you can't afford my 2.5 million dollar buyout."
JP-- "Damnit, you're right."

Breaking News: Pollard extends McDermott 2 years until 2024 to keep him from leaving Iowa State for Creighton.

Creighton isn't dumb enough to hire Mac. It's just that simple. His tenure at ISU has been a train wreck and they will get someone better.

Can't imagine Pollard wants to let McDermott go to Creighton and then turn around and play them this fall at Wells Fargo Arena in DSM.

WOI-Channel 5 is reporting Creighton AD was in DSM today...

maybe firemcdermott.com has been taken down because the insider who runs that knows that mcdermott's headed west?
:wideeyed:

Creighton bought the website.
Maybe.

CIMD and KG are noticeably in absentia.

IcSyU, am I still in the lead for your "most ******** thread of the week?
