McDermott to Creighton?

Looks like I'm not crazy - was just told that Greg McDermott would listen to Creighton if they called. I really hope they call! He's my pick

Obviously, with the source i'm taking it with a pound of salt, but still...

I would be incredibly upset if McDermott left for Creighton. He has received unwavering support from the AD and administration so I feel he needs to do everything in his power to follow through with the latest staff changes and improve the state of Cyclone MBB. If he left, that would leave Iowa State looking for a new head coach in May, with an even more difficult task in recruiting and not much time to do it. I don't see any recruits signing with a school that doesn't have a head coach. But I see the other side of this possible scenario as well, where JP gets a free redo on the hiring of a MBB coach. I just don't want to deal with more drama for MBB.

Recruiting doesn't matter as we aren't bringing anybody else this year anyway. Last thing i'm worried about is some fourth tier shooting guard that is between us and Loyola Maramount.

Yeah, unfortunately I think that train's already left the station.

And we have a new leader for most ******** thread of the week!

What is so "********" about it? We have a guy who has 15 wins, 14 wins, 15 wins, and 15 wins over his 4 years. Now there is speculation that another school may take him off of our hands. What is so "********" about that? Please explain it to me, genius. I guess I am "********" for not being able to understand it.

I can think of a couple million reasons to forgive him.

In fact, even if we give him 2 more years, odds are we'll end up paying him 1.5 mil then. McDermott has a 800k buyout (assuming it isnt waived)

I think McD would do well back at the mid-major level, just seems to be a better fit for him.

Is it an ideal time to launch a coaching search? No, but then again, we've already lost most of our returners that really have much of an option to leave, and its not like we're having a tremendous amount of luck replacing our losses as is, as recruits see Greg as a lame duck at this point. If we moved quickly on someone, maybe that coach might have better luck, even at this stage in the game?

Valid Points. I guess my next question is, what/ who would we look for in a new coach? Our two new assistants are far too green to be a big 12 head coach. Would suck for them if they got let go within a week of being hired...I find the timing of McDermott leaving disturbing.

Agreed as to nurse\grayer... then again, who knows, maybe the next coach might be open to having a cyclone great like Grayer on his staff (obviously a big maybe), and Nurse is rumored to have a decent sized buyout in his contract, so he'll be taken care of.

As to the timing... a shakeup in assistants followed by a head coach departure within weeks? Certainly dont hear of that often, other than with the Chiz at least..

If true then I agree. If Grayer and Nurse can pull off a miracle or two though...like a quality player who was let out of an LOI due to a coaching change...(not referencing a specific player)

HA! if we could be guaranteed in MBB the kind of turnaround and new life that PR has given our football program then lets do this thing!!!

It'd probably be hard to find an acceptable coach at this point in time. If we can, great. If not, maybe just bite the bullet and promote Nurse to "interim" coach for next season. Not the ideal situation as it would delay the rebuilding process for another year as far as looking for future recruits, but at this point, I think we are already facing that problem with the current direction. At least this way, we don't have to pay the problem to go away.

It is interesting to see when our hires have been (from a quick google news archive search, so may be off by a day):

Johnny Orr: March 25, 1980
Floyd: May 6, 1994
Eustachy: July 29, 1998
Wayne Morgan: May 14, 2003
Greg McDermott: March 21, 2006

Does it say anything about anything? Probably not.. just interesting.
