2 Deep on Cyclones.com

Him or Ja'Maine Billups. Either way it's been a good 10 years.

Have you been watching the DVD?

I agree, its been quite a while since we've had somebody who's been back there who you thought everytime he caught the ball "he could take it to the house".

For RB's this year, I think A-Rob will thrive at the position. Guys like Schwartz and Bo can do well in the spread in short yardage, but I think this is the year where we have a RB (ARob ) who will put up good numbers.

Saving that one till friday. Watching the 2002 Iowa game at the moment.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't ISU unable to run a nickle corner out there in 07 based on depth issues, and it still seems that were a bit short at the position but much better off for sure.

I'll be interested to see if we roll out the gate with Garrin, Raven and Smith all starting at LB next week. We need to get the young kids some experience and reps this year.

I doubt we will ever be too much deeper at CB (maybe last year). We have LJ, Banks, Benton, McDowell, and even Bell with starting experience, then there is Reeves.

I know this is dated 8/26/09 but I think there are some things on here that are incorrect. We will find out in 7 days though!

I hope so. It always seemed to me like there was a tendency to throw hard working Iowa kids into these kinds of positions regardless of whether or not they could handle it. Then it would come back to bite us in the butt.

Do you not think that the coaching staff puts the best player in those positions? Do you really think they reward a player because he is a "hard-working Iowa guy"? Do you think they want to sacrifice their jobs over rewarding someone who may not be the most capable for the job? Crazy.

It says at the top the PRE-FALL Depth Chart so I don't know how up to date these are

It's the end of summer (prefall) right now. The date at the top (8/26/09) says it's more current than the last one they put out.

kinda hard to say their job is on the line this or the next 4 years.

If he can really return punts, AWESOME. I'm admittedly skeptical because he's an instate freshman.
Do the punts fall from the sky differently out of state? Maybe it's an in state kid cause none of the out of state kids have proven themselves as reliable punt catchers.

Surprises for me:

Alvarez over Hicks (HUGE surprise IMO)
Lenz, Zitek, and Williams so high on the receiving chart

Obviously Alvarez over Hicks is the biggest surprise to me.

As we have come to find out over the last few years though, depth charts usually mean jack when it comes to game time.

It would not shock me to see this chart used as a way to get NDSU to prepare for someone/something else based off last year's film. Then insert Money in to the kick and punt return packages.

In the Clone Zone interview from the 18th, Bleil said that Alvarez has been playing very well in fall camp. When a guy comes in with a background as limited in football as he had, there is more opportunity for significant improvement each year as he becomes more familiar with the game. He and Lamaak offer good movement and agility at the guard spot while being flanked on both sides with power guys.

My biggest concerns with the OL are if KO can handle speed rushers on the back side, Reggie adapting to the center spot, and developing at least 3 guys to provide quality depth. The unit has a good chance to be one of the better OL's in the conference if these issues are successfully resolved.

Don't know about this coaching staff, but it seems that we have a long standing tradition of difficulty w/punt returns. I know Mac liked putting guys like that back there, and surprisingly enough, so did Chiz. Obviously the coaches want to reward these guys for busting their balls in practice every day, and I totally agree with that, I just don't think Punt Returner is the position to be doing that with. As I said earlier maybe they are so worried about people getting injured that they won't put the best return guys back there.

As far as coaches sacrificing their jobs over rewarding someone who isn't the most capable, I think it's pretty obvious that coaches (in general) have tendencies to reward certain players w/out thinking about the consequences. Coaches also make head scratching decisions all the time that cost them their jobs. Do you think it was Dan McCarney's intent to lose his job when he sat on a 10 point lead at KU, just as he had done many times before, always to lose? No, but it was a dumb decision, and did more to cost him his job than the 2006 season did.

It pisses me off to see Sandvig and O'Connell on KR/PR. Both of them have fumbled enough for one lifetime.

I'm so sick of seeing some guy get to return punts just because he's an undersized walk on from Iowa. The last 3 (now) coaching staffs have insisted on this. I really hope that McDowell (who is listed) ends up being the guy.

Also surprised to see Alvarez over Hicks.

Great post. I think the fans' choice right now would overwhelmingly be Reynolds. How can he be worse than the last handful of returners? No way.

I would rather have a guy who occasionally fumbles but has a legit chance of taking it to the house than what we have seen in recent years.

How great (and weird as an ISU fan) would it seem to not be about crawling out of your seat at Trice or couch at home due to being so nervous about the guy just catching the punt?

If Rhoads puts a non-head scratching returner out there on Thursday it will be a sign that he understands the importance of that position more than Dan and Gene ever did.

Why can't Reynolds do it? Or LJ? Are the coaches that aftraid of losing a good player to injury? Every other ******* team in this country has found guys that can catch a punt and at least try to run with it, except us.

This..... although LJ and Allen Bell are listed and I'd like to see those two back there. Maybe a little McDowell too.

Jeremy Reeves=Jamarcus Powers (my favorite Cyclone ever)

Remember when Powers ran the Int back for a TD against Nebraska (when they were #1)? Before the game he was talking about how hungover he was, after that he talked about how he should get drunk the night before every game (had a couple friends who played back then). He was also the only football player I can remember who I always saw smoking at campustown and the bar. Cocky and a good DB.
