***2026 NCAA MBB coaching carousel***

He already came out and turned it down.
But the main takeaway is UNC has a much broader scope: it's a matter of who wants to accept the job rather than finding an up and coming coach

I'm really not concerned about TJ taking the UNC job. UNC has much higher priority targets than TJ. Billy Donovan is another name being tossed around. Again, it's a matter if Billy wants to return to college

So did PSU with Campbell.

Campbell was by far not PSU’s first choice. Lots of things had to happen for Campbell to be offered that job

Otz by far will not be UNC’s first choice. Lots of things will need to happen before Otz is even offered the job.

Could it happen? Sure. It happened with Campbell. But it’s also not likely

Hopefully his friend with the horses doesn't want him to leave.

But why would Otz leave? Sure it sounded like there were some work to get Milan and Jefferson paid in the offseason but it's obvious that he can win here and there's no reason to think he can't win it all here. Hopefully the AD now knows what it takes and lets Otz do what he needs to do to get and retain his guys.

You're completely right. But this is my argument about blue bloods in this era—they're all still having to recruit their own rosters in season. As CW says, it never ends. Everyone "needs" more, all the time. Players need more money, more playing time, a better fit,... Coaches tell ADs and boosters they need more, more, more. Sure, if you're at UNC you can sign pretty much anyone you want, and if Otz leaves that would be why. But you're not remotely immune from turnover and struggling to maintain culture, and if you're not making at least the second weekend after a few years? Well, we saw what that meant for Davis

I don’t think TJ will be UNCs first call he will be 4th or 5th. I think only thing that makes TJ move on from Iowa state is increasing frustration around our NIL. I think UNC will get Donovan or Oats after going after May and Hurley but getting declined. I live in Chicago and it sounds like bulls will be moving on Donovan after this season, UNC would be a great landing spot for him after a mediocre run with the bulls.

There would be little argument that TJ is a top 10 coach or very close to it. Rochclone posted earlier that it would take $5.2M/yr to get TJ into a top 10 salary range. No idea where the money would come from but hopefully JP can somehow make this happen after the season ends.

North Carolina should push hard for Billy Donovan, or other proven pro coach. With their operating income advantage, they can run an actual professional program, all legal now with NIL. No silly no-show classes required.

Donovan and Stevens are for sure their first calls. Stevens already said no (great hubris from UNC to think they’re on the same level as the Boston Celtics). I expect Donovan to say no too.

Next calls are to Golden, Oats, and Hurley imo. I think one of them would take it. Then calls to Tommy Lloyd, McCasland, Otz, Byington.

If all of those say no, this would have been a disaster and they’re looking at like Scott Drew.

Unlike with Campbell, I think there are like 10 fan bases around the country freaking out about that job opening right now.

I’ve only skimmed the past few pages, but I don’t see Fred leaving Lincoln.

Nebraska, while not a blue blood, has enough money to take care of him. And he’ll get whatever he wants after this season.

When I think of KU failing in the NIL era it's not from having the #1 pick refuse to play, it's from all the 4/5 star guys that left after a year or two because they weren't getting enough playing time / weren't willing to stay and be developed into a great player as a redshirt Junior / Senior.

Top end talents who are ready for the NBA leave, and high end guys who need to develop will transfer for more playing time or more money. You just can't have a 5* riding pine like you used to.

Imagine this year's KU team if they still had 5* Zuby Ejiofor and 5* Ernest Udeh down low. That team would be a natty favorite.

Imagine how well Omaha Biliew would fit in year 3 of Otz, but he left because he's 5* and wasn't playing, and ISU couldn't justify paying market value for a 5* who doesn't play.
Omaha was criminally overrated as a basketball player. He is a big guy that can run up and down the floor, but has zero shot making skill other than dunking the basketball. At WF in his 3rd year of college bb he average 6.3 points a game and 2.4 rebounds.
Just because he was an overrated 5 star player does not mean that he is going to be a star player, because he is not. He would have struggled with playing time at ISU this season.

Ames is still a great place to live and raise a family. Almost all of the coaches are living in north Ames and sending their kids to the Gilbert school district that is rated yearly as one of the top 5 highest districts in the state. At the salary level these coaches are making a few million goes a long way for housing and other items, and just as important, people leave you alone when you are out with your family.

It remains to be seen if Campbell made a mistake trying to scratch the national championship itch by going to Penn State or not. The resources to win a championship in BB is a lot less than it takes in football and ISU has the ability to come up with enough NIL each year to be very successful, with a lot less pressure to win a championship. I really doubt your standard of living drops that much only making $5 million a year compare to 8 to 10 million a year. So it all comes down to can the university give me the resources to win a championship. Campbell understood ISU was never going to be able to do that in football, and he is probably correct in that thinking, but we do have the resources to win one in bb.

I don't think TJ ends up at unc but the ripple effect if jobs start opening up will be the uneasy part. Campbell was nowhere near the top of pedo's list but the dominoes started falling and he ended up there. This bball off-season could be similar.

I'm not sure why he would leave for anything less than one of the top ten jobs in the country, or somewhere that made sense, like Wisconsin.
