***2026 NCAA MBB coaching carousel***

I think this is really naive. Schools like UConn, Florida, Duke, Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas, Villanova, etc. - they win a lot of titles. They go to a lot of final 4's. They do this because they get 4 and 5 star talent and they get that 4 and 5 star talent to play hard as hell. Most often, the best players are the ones that put in the most work. The best of the best are most often the most relentless in their pursuit of greatness. There is no special magic thing where "5 star kids tend to be more entitled and tend to be more prone to being lazy and not team players". That isn't a real thing. Proportionally, there exists the same % of 3 star players that act entitled and act like they are not willing to put in the hard work.

Also, this idea that TJ wouldn't want donors involved in day-to-day operations... This assumes that elite coaches at the schools above are willing to accept things that TJ wouldn't be willing to accept. I don't know how any of us can know that. Do we think that because we think he's gritty and hard working and those other elite coaches are not? Like TJ is somehow built different?

Truthfully, I think this is all pretty simple. Do whatever it takes to keep TJ happy, including making him one of the Top 5 highest paid coaches in the country if needed and ensure the NIL apparatus is in place to fuel the program's growth and sustainability (at whatever detriment that creates). I worry that our AD might not be willing to do that, because he has shown us 3 crucial times that he's not. He has proven to us that he's not willing to do what is necessary to keep legendary coaches. If you were OK with the "nothing could have been done!..." excuse for Cael, Freddy, and CMC (tagged shortly thereafter with the demonization narrative of the outgoing coach, how it is their fault and they are the bad guy), then you better be OK with it here too. And no, it is not 'different' with TJ.

My hope is in Cook to prevent a scary outcome here.
First UCONN, Florida, and Villanova are not the same thing as Kansas, Duke, Kentucky, and North Carolina. UCONN is the closest but they are still a different animal. Of those 4 only Duke has seemed to successfully navigate the NIL era.

Duke is also unique in that they are a historic private school that has a very strong coaching ethos. They didn’t really have strong results until the 60’s then had some down years until they started to get going again in the late 70s. After that they have had Coach K and Schyer.

UNC, KU, and UK all have history of interference in their programs. I don’t remember what team but I know there have been reports of players being bought without any input from the coaching staffs. It isn’t a coincidence that the large public schools with big donors that want to control the teams have all struggled at the same time.

I do worry about it and we have to put whatever support is needed up for TJ but the idea that those blue blood schools are just so far above in basketball isn’t accurate. Basketball is the one sport that you can compete in without being one of those.

I'm not sure why there's this narrative of 5 star kids being lazy? I mean, how do you think they became 5 star kids?
Plus alot of 4/5 star kids aren’t 1 and dones. People think 5 star in basketball and think of only the Kansas kid not wanting to play or guys like Ben Simmons.

In reality the coaches get to pick the elite 4/5 star guys who fit their system and style of play. Thats the major advantage

There's more to it than just want-to. Many if not most are temporary until the NBA comes calling, and many of the high dollar recruits bounce around to the highest bidder. There's a reason the old destinations for the 5 stars are struggling in this new environment.

All those old destinations lost their legendary coaches or had them go into rapid decline like self.

The transfer portal does play a role but that’s usually for the elite recruits with minimal NBA futures or guys that didn’t have much success at the first stop

Jacques Vaughn was hired as coach in waiting. I think Fred is happy at Nebraska and will retire there-maybe in just a few years so he can come home and be our AD

Highly doubt he wants to be an AD in this schat show era.

Keep in mind that since NIL/Pay-for-Play/Rev share was implemented, the blue bloods haven't had as much success.

Kansas has been decent but not the level they were. Self has struggled to manage the roster of high profile recruits (Peterson) and transfers (Dickinson).

Kentucky and UNC haven't been at the same level they were.

Are some of these programs having down years? or is the new landscaping making it more challenging for the blue-bloods?
It’s harder when everyone can pay.

Turns out when everyone can pay the players, it’s a more level playing field.

That is my single biggest worry. I hope it isn't handled the same way that CMC was.

Don’t know how true this is but UNC might make a run at Brad Stevens. Only 49 years old
I get the effort for ANY basketball entity in the galaxy to reach out to him but he may have the absolute best basketball job in the galaxy.

I mean, it would most likely be 100% my first call too.

When I think of KU failing in the NIL era it's not from having the #1 pick refuse to play, it's from all the 4/5 star guys that left after a year or two because they weren't getting enough playing time / weren't willing to stay and be developed into a great player as a redshirt Junior / Senior.

Top end talents who are ready for the NBA leave, and high end guys who need to develop will transfer for more playing time or more money. You just can't have a 5* riding pine like you used to.

Imagine this year's KU team if they still had 5* Zuby Ejiofor and 5* Ernest Udeh down low. That team would be a natty favorite.

Imagine how well Omaha Biliew would fit in year 3 of Otz, but he left because he's 5* and wasn't playing, and ISU couldn't justify paying market value for a 5* who doesn't play.

Campbell got $10 million, which JP didn’t have. If UNC offers TJ $10 million, where does JP get that kind of cash?
Hopefully his friend with the horses doesn't want him to leave.

But why would Otz leave? Sure it sounded like there were some work to get Milan and Jefferson paid in the offseason but it's obvious that he can win here and there's no reason to think he can't win it all here. Hopefully the AD now knows what it takes and lets Otz do what he needs to do to get and retain his guys.
