Players Era

So since this event has signed on with big 12 top 8 teams and Arizona has decided to go to Maui in 2026, does it extend to 9th place? (Assuming Zona is a top half team this season)
Kansas and Houston have long term contracts signed and I believe Iowa State and Baylor are already signed for next year. For everyone else it could be theoretically more than 8 big 12 teams are invited or you might have to finish in the top 4 teams not already signed

As a part of the landmark partnership, the Big 12 – which has established itself as the top conference in men’s basketball over the years – will see the top eight teams in the league standings receive automatic bids to the following years’ Players Era Men’s Championship, starting with the 2026 event and running through 2030.

The Big 12 lineup for Players Era 2026:

Returning: Baylor, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas
Newcomers: Kansas State, TCU, Texas Tech, West Virginia

So, they aren’t basing invites on standings then? Or is it from last years standings?

Coincidence or not, the 2024-25 standings:
1 Houston
2 Texas Tech
3 Arizona
4 BYU
5 Iowa State

6 Kansas
7 Baylor
8 West Virginia
9 TCU
10 Kansas State

The question is if you believe that Arizona and BYU would have declined an opportunity.

Arizona and BYU already prior to today had said they were contractually locked in to Maui for 2026

I imagine in reality it is Players Era picking the teams they want based on some metrics they feel valuable. I imagine Kansas will always have a standing invite just due to brand.

I’m fine with that as you’ll have senior laden teams finishing in the top 8 that will be dog **** the following year. But, why say that in the press release from the Big12?

I guess I thought they’d wait until this season concludes and take the top 8 teams. But maybe they wanted a longer notice and are using two seasons prior?

BYU doesnt need the money from Player Era so they can do whatever they want for their non con

surprised to see U of A commit financial resources to Maui

my pipe dream napkin math MTE would be rolling Maui, Atlantis, ESPN Events Invite and Players Era into one 32 team field. 8 teams at each site, winner of each site then plays a champ 4 team event in Vegas

I’d love that. Qualifier MTE’s over thanksgiving week. Championship MTE’s between Christmas and New Year.

Which in the current era of portals & NIL is really kind of pointless. Most major conference teams can have massive roster turnover in just one year, let alone two.

what a bummer we get into that tourney this year and get creighton, st john's, and syracuse - that was bad luck.

now with a younger team next year, watch us get UCONN, Duke, and Florida (have no idea if they're in it or not).
