If it isn't fully bracketed, I guess you have to determine final round matchups using something. Point difference seems like random measurement, as discussed, but probably anything else would be hit-or-miss anyway.

Maybe the logic was teams that start 2-0 and cruise to wins are "more likely" to be better than the rest of the field.

Problem with point diffuse teams that played late knew the number they needed. And of course those were the teams they wanted in the money games. Hopefully we take this out on Kansas this year because frankly they simply can’t complete with us.

Speaking for myself, I don't care as much about the rules as I do that they gave KU a cakewalk into the top 4. It wasn't hard to see pre-season that was an incredibly easy path based on the criteria. We got put in the worst freaking "pod" or whatever. Pre-season all of those teams were ranked or close to ranked. Fix the rules or the matchup selection to make it more equitable, because it was far from that this year.

I am thrilled with how the team looked against formidable competition but this was one stupid format.

The Athletic article I read the same thing, Milan asked the staff what to do, and he was told not to shoot the ball. Sucks, but we were the team that got screwed but the team really played without their point guard for two games.

I'm just happy that we went 3-0. Does it suck for next year's NIL budget? Sure. That's next year. We can complain that KU got a better draw, but St. John's proved in their 3rd game they weren't world beaters. Maybe don't let them hit two 3's late and then get the garbage bucket at the buzzer. Or maybe don't give up a bunch of easy turnovers vs their press.

I'm happy how the team played mostly without Tamin. That's good enough for me.

Something to consider in this is that KU also had the benefit of knowing how many points they needed to score in order to jump us because they played after us. If we had gotten those extra 2-4 points we keep talking about, it's still fairly likely that KU gets enough to jump us anyway.

Agreed. It's clear with the current PE format they toyed with things as much as they could.

But thats kinda the whole point. They can set up enough primo matches in the initial games for tv, then the top teams win and you get more primo matches for the title.

That’s fine, but if the coach won’t do what’s necessary to put themselves in a better position to earn more NIL money, don’t ask the fans to do it. Seems disingenuous to not try and score 2 more points at the end of a game, but then ask the fans to pony up.

I am all for what TJ is doing culturally and the results are playing out on the court. In the grand scheme, this is a really small thing ti critique a great coach and leader over.

At the same time, they preach preparation and accountability. This left a game against Tennessee (rather than a bad Syracuse team) in a prime time TV slot and 500k on the table. For a program like ours, that’s a large amount of money. Probably the difference between a star player and a sixth man for us next year.

I also think it’s really weird to have your starters in with game fully out of reach for several minutes at that point but then tell them not to shoot. Those two things seem to be in conflict with each other.

Then we shouldn’t have went to it if we didn’t like the format. There’s no excuses…. TJ basically turned down the opportunity for us to make more money…. it’s on him.

I totally agree. In a normal bracket style tournament, I get it. In a tourney where everyone knows point differential matters any coach throwing a fit about running up the score would rightfully be labeled as a *****.

And if Milan got the green light but missed they'd ***** about that and be screaming about how these are paid athletes so they should make the money ball like it's automatic and maybe it's time for him to transfer if he's not going to help boost fans' fee fees.

It's funny how this situation replaced the meltdowns about players playing for two more minutes but here we are.

Exactly. TJ said he knew the criteria and ISU had the chance for 2 more points at the end of the Creighton game but chose not to take them. I think it’s a little dumb since McDermott would have known it’s part of the tourney and not disrespect. Might be covering up for Milan not taking the shot but who knows.

TJ probably gave himself tennis elbow he was waving Milan off so hard. He did not want him to shoot. Rewatch the game and you'll notice TJ.

It’s a pretty sad world we live in that it’s come down to this especially in college sports. Everything is about money and it sucks. Probably will never happen but there needs to be so much regulation on NIL

Point differential is VERY common in youth sports. 11u soccer teams are always pushing it to 4 in tournaments. This is tournament sports at basically every level.

I'll paraphrase TJ, but Google is your friend. We are a team of integrity. Our team had ample opportunities to push this well past 20 points in the 2nd half and didn't. But because we didn't doesn't mean we are going to do what most normal people know is a classless act by jacking up a last second 3 just to run up the score. We will take your million dollars but we're not gonna play your moronic games set up by some moron.

As for those whining about the whining. ISU fans were not the only ones complaining. TN fans were irate. Most of the sports TV personalities were complaining about the format. NY Post wrote an entire article on the moronic format. On Tuesday the moronic organizer was trying to defend his format. But because of all the whining and negative publicity, by Wednesday he was stating they would make changes to the format.

One final word. I have been to many of these Feast Week tourneys. This was by far the most fan and team unfriendly event I've ever seen.

Read most of the posts in this thread and only one unanswered question remains-- I don't know who is happier with the results of this "FESTIVAL" (not tournament), myself or TJ & the team?
With the results being what they were this year and expansion of teams competing the format will change (and possibly MTE rules) and maybe it becomes a tourney. It's in the books, We finished 3-0. It's very possible that some fans placed more value on the dollars than the players did.
Let this thread die.
