Cyhawk postgame thread

Why would Bret want the Iowa job? He is in Illinois with a lot of amazing athletes and no one to recruit against in state.
No instate school to compete against doesn’t really apply to Illinois. All border state big ten schools recruit Illinois heavily.

Edit: and Notre dame is huge in Chicagoland.

They're same team as last year (maybe slightly better because of QB) but they're going to lose 3-4 more games because of schedule difference.
They are worse imho.
Any possible gain on offense (not qb, but their OL i think is very good) will be MORE than offset by defense and special teams not being near as good as recent versions.
Kirk winning strategy relies on ELITE play by defense and ST both. They arent going to get ELITE play very much this year.

They could rise up and beat say, PSU in a rockfight, and they will win some 50/50 games vs mid teams. But i dont see winning ALL those 50/50 games like usual this season. 6 or 7 wins sounds about right. And if a couple guys get hurt, or the esprit d'ecorps falls apart... watch out.

I'd expect them to have a chance against USC too.

Sorry if this has already been micro-analyzed, but in re-watching the game for details, I stopped again on that muffed punt by ISU. Very simply, how can someone be blocked 'In to' the receiver when the block is towards the outside AND the blocker releases ahead of the block AND the receiver? The terminology of the ruling is therefore, inaccurate, or a total blunder by the refs. If the blocker can avoid the receiver, again, 'in front' of the defender, the defender too can certainly do that. The rule or the training for the refs needs to adopt clarity. Especially, where this type of clarity is shown. That is one of many potential tide turning calls/no-calls.

That play would have haunted us for many years had ISU lost. Horrible call to pick up the flag.

It’s losses. Need to have 1 or fewer losses and you’re in. Let’s stop pretending SOS matters based on SMU getting in last year.
oh you think last years decisions matter? They will move the goal posts anywhere they like ... could be SOS, could be a 3 loss team .... games don't really matter for some.

I think Iowa is probably to finish in the 7-5 to 9-3 category. Average Big 10 team. Gronowski may be wasted in their system, but he does have the ability to pick up yards with his feet, and can throw the ball better than his stats would indicate. They still need to find someone to throw it to though. Another boring AF Iowa team to watch.

It was bad but outside of it ISU also had chances to make it a 2-3 score lead that they didn't execute on.

Regardless, there have been times when ISU would let that one thing affect the rest of the game and it's good that the program seems to be in a spot where they can pull together and move on.

Heck holding Iowa to just a FG there was a positive.

I think Gronowski’s futility is a huge nail in their coffin. The futility of a very productive QB means a lot to future recruits/ transfers.

Had a Hok tell me today that they dominated the stat sheet. Somebody please tell me how that could be anything but dilution?
Worse passing efficiency, fewer passing yards, worse YPC rushing, fewer total yards, fewer points. I guess they did have 1 fewer penalty and 4 fewer penalty yards, he must have been hanging his hat on that one.

Sounds similar to the KSU guy that said they "dominated but lost" that game in Ireland.

EIU is not going to get to 9 wins, that would mean they are 6-2 in conference the rest of the way and only lose to Oregon and Penn. State. They were much more likely to end up 6-6. West coast game to USC, remember they lost at UCLA last year and they were horrible, have to go to Nebraska, home against Indiana and their game with Wisconsin could all be loses.

Anyone that thinks old free rents is going to walk away when he is under contract for 4 more years is crazy, and his buyout is $6 million per year left on his contract if fired without cause. It's going to be Penn State or FSU all over again, aging coach that the game has left behind but just can't give it up and is now chasing victories.

I mean, here's the box score https://www.espn.com/college-football/boxscore/_/gameId/401752822

Offensive stats are disgustingly identical, ISU had 50 more receiving yards, and 30 fewer rushing

ISU D had 3 sacks vs 0. 6 TFL vs 3.

I'd prescribe the following responses:
  1. Scoreboard
  2. giphy.gif

Yeah, two higher profile quarterbacks in a row looking bad in that system sends a terrible message, especially when they were sold as the answer to a pretty long pattern of futility there.
