Big 12 Championship Game Projection

Hey, y'all. I've done this the past two years, and we're far enough into the season that I think it makes sense running the scenarios again.

Basically, this is 100,000 Monte Carlo simulations of the rest of the Big 12 football season in Python, using Ken Massey’s rating system for the odds for every remaining game.

Here are the chances for each team to make the Big 12 Championship Game. The parenthetical is their regular-season chances of finishing 1st and 2nd.

Oklahoma: 87.7% (61.6% 1st, 26.1% 2nd)
Texas: 72.8% (30.6% 1st, 42.2% 2nd)
Baylor: 17.1% (4.2% 1st, 12.9% 2nd)
Iowa St.: 6.9% (1.4% 1st, 5.6% 2nd)
Oklahoma St.: 5.1% (0.8% 1st, 4.3% 2nd)
Texas Tech: 4.1% (0.4% 1st, 3.8% 2nd)
TCU: 3.7% (0.6% 1st, 3.0% 2nd)
West Virginia: 2.1% (0.3% 1st, 1.8% 2nd)
Kansas St.: 0.4% (0.1% 1st, 0.3% 2nd)
Kansas: c'mon

And here are the Championship Game matchups that have at least a 1% chance of happening:

Oklahoma/Texas: 61.7%
Baylor/Oklahoma: 11.8%
Iowa St./Oklahoma: 4.8%
Baylor/Texas: 4.4%
Oklahoma/Texas Tech: 3.3%
Oklahoma St./Texas: 2.7%
Oklahoma/TCU: 2.6%
Oklahoma/Oklahoma St.: 2.1%
Iowa St./Texas: 1.6%
Oklahoma/West Virginia: 1.1%

(Slight boring caveat: The program only goes through the first two tiebreakers, since the third tiebreaker involves points and would be a pain in the butt to model. That said, the first two tiebreakers -- and situations with no tiebreaker necessary -- covered 99.6% of the simulations, so the odds wouldn’t change much.)

And finally, here’s Iowa State’s chances of ending up at any given record and their chances of making the championship game at that record:

ISU record chances:
3-9: 0.3%
4-8: 3.9%
5-7: 16.0%
6-6: 30.0%
7-5: 29.7%
8-4: 15.8%
9-3: 4.0%
10-2: 0.4%

ISU odds of championship game at record:
7-5: 0.4%
8-4: 19.9%
9-3: 82.8%
10-2: 100.0%

Anyone want the odds for different scenarios, just ask -- they're easy to do.

NFL: ***Official Week Eleven Thread***

Steelers @ Browns tonight. Must-win for the Browns in order to stay in the wild card hunt.

Texans @ Ravens - Maybe the next great QB rivalry; Deshaun Watson and Lamar Jackson.

Bears @ Rams - Bears need a win to stay in the hunt for a wild card spot.

The big news of the weekend (and I hesitate to even bring it up since the last thread about him went to the cave or flat out got shut down) - is going to be the Saturday open workout and interview for Colin Kaepernick in Atlanta. If this really is just a dog and pony show the league put together to cover their ass then they've done a really poor job of it. Depending on which reports are to be believed somewhere between ten and twenty teams will have scouts in attendance. Multiple questions, though. Why now? And why on a Saturday when half of the teams in the league are traveling? Why such short notice?

Thoughts on B12 Future

Ahead of writing for this week, and in an attempt to avoid blathering on in an article, I had a thought that I would love to get feedback on.

I think Neal Brown, Matt Wells, Chris Klieman, Lincoln Riley, Mike Gundy, Gary Patterson, won't acknowledge Baylor, and Tom Herman are good coaches. Each program, along with Iowa State has been building and will continue as the new coaches reach their potential, which is very high. This makes for a killer conference from a competitive standpoint.

All QB's are likely to return except for Hurts and Stanley. I can't remember if Brewer is a senior or not. OU has an all worlder waiting in the wings. Purdy, Duggan, Doege, Rattler, Brewer, Bowman/Duffy, Sanders, Thompson, and Ehlinger makes for a ridiculous bag of riches at quarterback.

There is no point except that the top of the conference may expand from 2 to 6 or 7 teams. Am I right? What does it mean for the conference? Playoff chances? Iowa State's position in it. Is it sustainable? How does it rate against the Big 10 and the SEC? What about national perception?

CALL TO ARMS: Release Gaming and Hobbies Subforum

Please turn the gaming and hobbies forum back to opt out and make it public for all to see!! You have killed a once great sub.

It was only opt in because people whined that a mafia thread was always on the front page. Well now it's cool that there are 10 stupid threads about trump constantly on the top of the front page?

And you can't even opt in correctly to the gaming sub without a mod trying to figure out how to force it through.

Take 10 seconds out of your day to fix this as mafia was once a great staple of this site.

WBB Pre-season polling published

AP and Coaches out yesterday. ISU #24 in coaches. #27 in AP. Little surprised at that. Not surprised to be receiving votes but thought we would be down the line a bit more. Baylor and Texas are the only Big 12 teams ranked in both polls. West Virginia getting enough ORV to almost crack the Top 25.

Was also a little surprised to Gophers ranked in AP. They do like Whalen though.

This week at “On That Note”

Hey all. This week’s topic for “On That Note”: favorite songs released from 2010 to 2019. We're giving advance notice to allow time to compile your song lists.

Please limit selections to music released during the 10-year window. Songs you encountered during the decade that were released prior to 2010 don't qualify.

REMINDER: Do NOT post song samples in this thread. Official thread launch is Tuesday night, in traditional OTN fashion.

WrestleStat Rankings - Week 3 2020

After our upset-packed weekend, the rankings have been re-processed.

Some notables:

Sebastian Rivera has 2 matches at 133, and his ranking at that weight is now #2, right behind Seth Gross.

Brent Moore of Virginia Tech moves up 12 spots to #4 after pinning #2 Sammy Sasso.

Ethan Smith of Ohio State moved up 10 spots to close at #12 at 165 pounds.

Dean Sherry also gets 14-place bump all the way to #12 after his upset win over Skatzka of Minnesota.

Kyle Conel slips down 2 spots to finish at #4 at 197.

There's a new #2 at 285, and he works for Michigan. Mason Parris trades places with Matt Stencel after his upset win last weekend. Don't worry though, Stencel has a chance at revenge THIS WEEK as Central Michigan and Michigan meet in a dual.

One reminder about the dual rankings; they do NOT reflect previous head-to-head dual results. They are a result of running each team through the prediction engine to see who would win in a dual based on the individual matchups.

South Dakota: We're "On Meth"

South Dakota's new tagline for its anti-meth campaign is, "Meth. We're On It" complete with a web site, onmeth.com. Actual grown-ups approved this and the governor even recited it on video.

This is some ad agency's idea to break through the noise and attract attention, but I'm not sure how effective it is when the first reaction (and the second, and the third, and the fourth...) is to make jokes at your state's expense. Let's see if it survives being a national laughingstock or if they change it.
