Bird Migration and Misc Birding Thread

We apent a few days two weeks ago at my sisters house near Carthage MO las week. Scarlet Tanagers and others all over her yard. I put out Merlin out to listen one morning and had 30 birds in 12 minutes. Timber on three sides of their acerage.

I've only seen a Scarlet a couple of times. But their red color is just stunning. Very tropical. Summer tanagers aren't quite as pretty.

I mentioned upthread that my sister got 36 different types at my parents' this weekend on Merlin. If you have good places for the birds to hang out and someone pretty dedicated to feeding them, you can get lots of fun birds.

Also, my turning into a bird person is a plot twist I did not anticipate.

RECRUITING: Donovan Davis on reaching goals, his visit to Ames

Houston showed the value of disruptively long wingspan in its roster this year, which made players more versatile and able to switch. I remember my three man intramural team at ISU was pretty good. In the tournament we were advancing until we ran up against a team that had a 6'5" guy that we just couldn't get passes around or over. Things looked wide open and he would still make the steal. He was a lefty, so I overplayed him left and he STILL went left on me. Told him he should try out for the ISU team and he said, I am on it, but had to sit this year out...it was Elmer Robinson!

"God dammit, Elmer!"

Johnny also said "David (Moss) had the longest arms he'd seen on a white boy".

Kelsey Joens in Portal

I hope you got permission from Kelsey before very publicly sharing this. If you did great - if not, not cool. I'm sure you did...

There are those who support Fennelly no matter what and those who blast him no matter what. And then there are those who are skeptical of most reports that are extreme to either end of the spectrum.
That was my first thought, that Kelsey should have the say but once the toothpaste is out.

Very informative, sorry to hear this. I don't know if this is cruel or is it an honest talk with a player. In any job, tough choices are made. The silver lining is Kelsey is landing on her feet and probably even better. We will really miss her.

Which NBA era wins...

Era debates are always hard, and I feel like they tend to devolve into stupid arguments. But I'll get into it anyway.

Obviously rules and play style have changed a lot over the course of the NBA. I do think people overrate the physicality of the 80s and 90s (you can't just reference the Bad Boy Pistons and ignore every other team), and I think the three-point era naturally leads to less physicality from better spacing and less low-efficiency post offense.

But people also forget that there have been rule changes that have allowed greater variety in defenses. Before 2001, help defense was extremely limited and defenders had to mostly stay attached to their guys, regardless of whether their guy was able to shoot at all.

Jordan himself advocated against allowing zone defenses and said that his career would have looked a lot different if he had had to play against zones.

With defensive style rules relaxed in 2001, defenses nowadays have a ton of different ways to play against pick-and-rolls that weren't possible or were much more limited before the rule change. It means that defenses are more complex (even if they are less physical) and playoff series often become more of a chess match of scheme adjustments rather than just a question of whose guys are better one-on-one players.

Because of all of that, I think my answer is basically if these teams are playing with pre-2001 rules, I'm going with the Boomers. If they're playing with rules after 2001, and if we replace Harden with Kawhi, I'll go with the Millennials. I also think the Millennials also have the most complementary team on offense while the others have a lot more redundancy (I would love to see Steph play with Jokic and Lebron, for instance).
By the same token, if you drop today's players into the Boomer's rule set you would have those players turning the ball over left and right with carrying, double dribble and traveling calls. Those have been loose for decades in the NBA but have gotten ridiculous during the last ten years or so. Sure they could adapt but there is no question that it is an advantage today for the offensive player when he can fake out the defender by taking extra steps or palming the ball on his "hesi".

In addition many of the boomer's FT shooting averages would go up since today's players can't stay out of the lane or outside the arc until the FT shot is released. Many boomers getting second chances on missed FTs.

Foul hunting has been around for a long time but it has gotten out of hand lately. I think many stars of today who are more concerned with drawing contact rather than getting a good shot would have a bit of culture shock.

I would have to go back and look at old game footage but I think it is ridiculous today how picks are set wrapping up players who are trying to get around screens forcing the switch or two hand chucking them so they are pushed a couple of feet further from the basket when they are trying to catch up to their man. I watched a couple of the Indiana/Cleveland games and I'm not sure I have seen a Cavalier big set a clean screen yet.

2025 field work

My point is, there is no curve on the front side of the beans. I don’t believe there should be either. BASF had some great data but I can’t find it online. They may not have released it to the public.

So if soybeans are planted in March there is no curve? The reason there is no curve is because there is no data for soybeans planted before April 25. They started April 25.

Hey 19 - Random Thoughts: In the year 2525...more or less

Several years ago we won an auction prize to have seats in Jamie Pollard's suite at JTS. It's in the endzone - the three rows of seats above the band are the front deck of the suite. Did not like. I don't like endzone seats because I can't see the action in the game unless I watch the big screen...and again, that's not really a great atmosphere (to me). These suites appear to be the ones along the west side, just above where our season tickets are. The windows open, but you are still inside the suite. That would be better than the suite we were in, and have a view almost as good as our seats, and the climate control would be nice. I'm just guessing it's a lot more money than I would want to spend.

Best HVAC company in Des Moines/Ames Area

Just had our Carrier A/C unit checked a couple of weeks ago. Today, the condenser motor started to hum and wouldn’t kick on. This was a 4 pm. C&K had someone here in 30 minutes. Turns out the motor is bad. Problem is they don’t have a motor on hand.

Thankfully we still were covered on parts. They waived the service call since they were just here two weeks ago. Still labor is $300. Unit warranty runs out in December. Motor alone is $250. So I did save a little bit. Nice to be able to open the windows yet with no humidity yet. Fingers crossed they get it replaced tomorrow.

Golf lessons

I follow Kerrod Gray on twitter. Easy to the point instruction. I also use golffix app on my phone. You can use it in your garaga and anylize your posture and swing. Both of these plus my retirment has really helped my game, My golf buddies ask what I have done to have such a better looking swing. Yes my score has dropped with consistancy created by those two internet instructors.
