Under the radar connections to Iowa

I haven't read every entry in this thread, but I see no mention of the modern digital computer's inventor(s), ISU's own John Vincent Atanasoff and Clifford Berry.

Jesse James visited some, including Corydon, Iowa, on June 3, 1871, 152 years ago today.

Moe Cason is from and still lives in Des Moines. He's a big name in the BBQ scene.

Herbert McNary, of Britt, owned oldest surviving car sold (the third ever) by the Ford Motor Company from July 1903 to sometime in 1950.

E.A. (Edward Arthur) Mellinger (Nov. 7, 1872 – Oct. 3, 1933), of Morning Sun, had several patents (maybe a dozen?) for the telephone. His gravestone reads: "An able engineer whose life and labors contributed greatly to the advancement of automatic telephony."

Presently, Mellinger's legacy lives on through a scholarship foundation.

I'm almost certain these two men played for Iowa State football together, as quarterback and right halfback respectively, in 1893. Mellinger also played in 1894 and earned his lone letter in 1895.

According to the I.A.C. Student printed Oct. 1, 1895, in the game against Northwestern that gave the team their "Cyclones" name, Mellinger went 6/6 on point after touchdowns (PATs).

Sounds like we should've been the ISU Mellingers

The only person that I know that thinks she went to East is Ross Peterson. Maybe she looks like someone that went there. Her real initials are J.B.

She graduated in 1993, flunked out of ISU her 1st year and eventually graduated from Grand View.
Did she graduate from GV? Know a guy who went there and he said she was there 1-2 semesters.

Did McNary murder anyone? That’s kinda Britt people’s thing.

His sister lived near me. Could see their pasture area very clearly. One Saturday dozens of tents appeared. (This was a month after RR). Turned out to be a scout retreat

Bet you wondered for a minute.

It’s the area where Farm Progress show is held. There is a coop location and a house or two where the town used to sit. Calling it a town may be a stretch as I don’t believe population was ever above 30.

My dad was at the fertilizer shed that is now a Nutrien location when it hit. Been awhile since we’ve talked about it but said it was scary.
Just down the road from the Shrine.

I batted against Boddicker in Little League. Well, maybe I should say I saw three pitches. He pitched the first inning, threw nine pitches/strikes. They brought another pitcher in the second inning.
He walked me in a Legion State tournament game. They beat us, he was easily the best player on the field.
