ISU's top 3-point shooters hope to gel at same time in season opener

*** WBB opener Monday 11:00 am vs St. Thomas ***

Early tipoff for annual "kids game" so posting now since I am 100% sure to forget Monday morning.

No game preview yet that I could find. Game will be on ESPN+

LIVE STATS

This is not likely to be a very competative game. Tommies are incrementally improving after moving up to Div I but are at best a middling Summit League team. We bet them in St. Paul two years ago by 41 and won by 33 in Ames last season. I am interested mostly only because Tommies are local to metro.

Not much on Tommies site either, just this brief snippet:

A DAWNING OF A NEW ERA: The Tommies will look a little different when they open their season on November 3, 2025. Four of St. Thomas starters from the 2024-25 team are no longer with the program, but that doesn't necessarily spell doom for the Tommies. Head coach Ruth Sinn put together her tallest roster of the DI era with just one player under 5'7 on the roster. - tommiesports.com

Everything Matt Campbell, Rocco Becht, Kooper Ebel and Carson Hansen said following Arizona State loss

Iowa State loses their fourth game in a row in a 24-19 loss to Arizona State. Watch everything head coach Matt Campbell, quarterback Rocco Becht, linebacker Kooper Ebel and running back Carson Hansen said during postgame.

405

That’s approximately the number of yards ASU’s backup had against us. That is inexcusable. Slow Lb’s not filling holes properly, taking on blockers in the middle of their body, poor angles, and not gap sound. Safeties- holy si7t, since when is diving at someone’s knees tackling? 13 is awful.

Coaches need to sit Rocco for his long term benefit. He has been bad, worst qb in the conference the last four games. He is inaccurate, making poor reads, and giving unthinkable interceptions. I can’t remember EVER seeing an interception like he threw last week and then he throws another one on the sideline to Hansen that was three yards behind Hansen. You have three downs (essentially) to get 10 yds and when your qb is bad like Rocco is you eliminate at least one play on each drive. The offense looks like have no faith in him right mow

Receivers continue to drop the ball. It looks like it doesn’t bother them, no accountability, no change in their play. Rocco need a huge help and they aren’t giving it to him.

I don’t know what is going on inside the team, but this is NOT the team we saw play with passion and intensity the first couple games.

I love ISU too much and this is painful. I had zero thoughts that they would score on the last drive…last year I knew they would score. Whatever is wrong is larger deal, I wish I knew what it is.

Game Thoughts: Arizona State

This is starting to remind me of the scene in Tommy Boy when Richard tells Tommy (after a series of failed sales meetings), "Well, let's head off to our next huge embarrassing failure." This performance was mostly on the offense, and I was actually quite proud of the D. The D played way better than they did at Colorado.

Offense

- Rocco Becht stinks right now and I don't know what else to say. He's struggling in intermediate throws (10-20 yards), and he's not seeing check downs either
- The final 4th down throw to Chase Sowell was really low and near his knees. If that pass is anywhere near the torso or mid section Sowell runs out of bounds easy and keeps his feet. Chase Sowell in general has been a big letdown this season and his only big game was Arizona. Sowell had a couple drops today and it hurt the team.
- Case in point ISU was 2/12 on 3rd down late in the game. Cut out the multiple tight end sets it is clogging up the middle of the field and making us easy to defend. Where are the slant passes to our quick WRs, screens to RB or WR, we do nothing to make the defense cover more of the field laterally
- The throw to Ben Brahmer was a total hospital ball and completely terrible.
- Carson Brown should play more, one PI drawn and catches most balls. I'm wondering if Brett Eskildsen OR Carson Brown had 10 targets and Sowell had fewer would this outcome have been different.
- Dylan Lee had a huge block and a nice run, would like to see him play more especially if Hanson is dinged up.
- Ben Brahmer had a hold on an important 2nd down and an offensive pass interference. One TE probably shouldn't have two flags in the same game woof. Having said that I feel horrific about his injury whatever it was, hope he recovers ok.
- I put this game more on Rocco and less on Taylor Mauser. Rocco missed so many easy throws, did not check it down at all ever. On one 3rd and 5 he had Carson Hanson wide open for a 6 yard gain and he ran around and got sacked.

Defense

- Kooper Ebel is a really good, future NFL player to me. He was everywhere today and looked all Big 12. Marcus Neal is a good safety.
- Will McLaughlin had a massive forced fumble
- The front 6 has zero playmakers outside of the above.
- We are 9th in the big 12 in interceptions, and 2nd to last in sacks. The defense will not be winning / closing games with metrics like that.
- Our defense made a backup QB (on his 3rd program) look like Cam Newton at Auburn in the 1st half.
- Tatoroa McDonough and Izeguo at DE don't do anything particularly well, are neither good pass rushers nor huge difference makers at stopping run
- The defense played well enough for us to win today, and I'm going to put this loss squarely on the offense.

Special Teams
- Our special teams is always high liability, zero upside - and that was proven true again today. Aiden Flora is never allowed to return a punt.

Time to log off

Its time to log off for a while.

I think its also time for many of you on here to do the same.

See you in a few, hours, days, weeks, years... guess we will see which, but it for sure wont be for the rest of today.

Have a drink, take a break, and breath. The sun will come up tomorrow... an hour earlier.

We need watch this team like we're watching a Sharknado movie

Are we watching high quality football? No. Would we rather watch high quality football? Yeah. But instead the only thing on TV is Sharknado.

Is something stupid going to happen? Yep. Sharknado is pretty stupid. Wait for it and acknowledge it's going to happen. It's a movie about sharks flying around in a tornado after all, that's pretty stupid. Iowa State football is also pretty stupid. We've seen the absolute dumbest of the dumb **** occur in general here but especially this season. WTF interceptions, missed extra points, 3 injured kickers, back up QBs going nuts on us, players stepping on live punts for no reason. That's the football version of a tornado throwing a great white shark directly on top of you. Wait for it, laugh at it. Sure, it's not a masterclass movie like we want to be watching. But we're Sharknado is our only option this season, so just watch and laugh because that's the only thing we can do. Maybe we'll get a good ending out of the stupid. Sometimes that happens. Maybe we get a bad finish because the movie is stupid, so there's probably a stupid ending too. IDK. It's Sharknado after all.

Worst team since 2016

This is easily the worst football team I’ve seen since 2016. Not a single NFL player on either side of the ball. Awful execution and focus in all three phases of the game.

Strangely the best unit on the team this year is the O line. Clanton you’ve done a good job.

Mouser should not have an OC job next year. His passing schemes are incredibly simplistic and rely on having NFL receivers.

Problem is, what improvement can we make? There isn’t any talent on the 2 deeps on either side of the ball, and we cannot poach any good players (see Chase Sowell, lol what a waste of money). Try to keep the OL and ditch the rest I suppose.
