YouTube TV Getting Ability to Split Into 4 Screens

From the Youtube TV Reddit page:

Hi YouTube TV subscribers!

We heard your feedback loud and clear… Over the next few weeks we’ll be experimenting with the ability for YouTube TV members to build a multiview with select channels beyond live sports. We’re starting with a small list of popular national channels across a variety of content genres and have plans to expand to more, including local channels, over the coming months as we have further testing from our users. The channels that are part of this experiment may change over time, but we’re currently testing with select nationally available channels like ESPN, Bravo, and USA. We’ll be slowly rolling this experiment out to users, so don’t worry if you don’t have access yet. You will soon!

You’ll be able to find these multiviews in the same way as before.

  • From the Home tab, click into a multiview from the “Watch in multiview” row or “Top picks for you” row for personalized multiview recommendations.
  • On your smart TV or streaming device, start watching an eligible channel and tap down on your controller to find a multiview.
  • On your mobile device or tablet, start watching an eligible channel and tap “Multiview” on the player to find a multiview.
We’re also planning to launch a new “Always-On” multiview that includes your local ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC channels. Note: This is different from the above customization experiment which local channels aren’t currently a part of, but we do plan to add local channels to it in the near future!

We hope that you’re as excited about this as we are and we can’t wait to hear your feedback! The more you all test, the sooner we can launch further channels and improvements

Well this could be a problem for the game this weekend. Guess can always use an Over the Air Antenna to get it.

Not only our game but Ohio State-Texas as well.

I get really tired of the consumer always being last with Big Media.

I have directv stream that I split with my mom on a fixed income. Unlike YTTV or Hulu, they actually allow sharing in different households for now. I watch it under 2 hours a week in the summer, and add in games during football and basketball season for somewhat more then. My mom watches it quite a bit more. So one small win for the consumer there I guess.

But I was in Canada over the weekend. I had intended to watch the football game only to find I was blocked for being outside the U.S.

Throw in carriage disputes like this one and it’s clear the customer (the viewers) are always an afterthought to media rights and carriage costs.

Cut the cable a couple years ago and went to YTTV mainly because my cable provider and nbc had a blackout during the Olympics. Was very happy at the time

But it’s clear it didn’t matter at all. Everything is now an add on and there are still potential blackouts with contract negotiations.

I was initially saving a good $70/month but the value just isn’t there anymore. Time to look at options again, but I’m sure I won’t like what I find

We split YTTV just fine. We did add the 4K to get unlimited screens at home and 4 away from our home. Maybe it helps that we’re in the same viewing area for locals? Not sure how that works if you select a new permanent location outside your normal viewing area.

And for international travel, you need a VPN and turn off location services and you can get national channels. Can’t get locals as that requires location services turned on. So games on Fox won’t work.

If this goes on it’ll be time for me to take the plunge into the provider direct services. I doubt that’ll be any better, but at least there are no carriage disputes. You’ll pay what they say you’ll pay.

We split YTTV for about a year, but my mom is in Iowa and I'm in Utah. Every 90 days or so, I had to log her in at my house or she would be cut off. It wasn't the end of the world. But bless her heart, she felt like it wasn't honest. So I researched and found DirectTV Stream doesn't have that restriction so she felt better about it.

That's good to know about international. I tried a VPN actually, but didn't turn off location services. Sounds like it wouldn't have mattered.

Just this morning I tried to cast a DVR recording to a Chromecast and I got a message saying "This Program is Not Authorized to Cast". Stuff like that irks me.

My larger point is the viewer/customer is always the last consideration in these disputes and agreements and it makes for a poor experience.

Welp time to prepare for another price hike in a couple months.

Just like NFL players on the last year of their contract... "I'm not going to play until I get paid!"

FYI, this worked for me. You get a nice little 2 month discount:
