No one, and I mean ABSOLUTELY NO ONE, outside of friends and families of former gymnasts will even know gymnastics is gone. This state in particular is blowing off the charts in terms of growth in women's wrestling. There will be 10 fold the amount of casual fans at a women's wrestling meets than there was at a gymnastics meet that wasn't named "Beauty and the Beast"So Jamie sees the opportunity for a one year pause where what was gymnastics funding can be used to renovate spaces to prepare properly to get women's wrestling off the ground on a good foot as a smart approach, and he is probably right there.
He basically says women's gymnastics (particularly the athlete's families) didn't know their place in the heirarchy of athletics at ISU which was bad for cohesion in the department. Possibly true, but I don't know if I buy that totally. Regardless, ISU is a place that needs truly women's wrestling as a varsity sport and I am glad this is the moment they are able to make it happen, even if it comes at the ultimate expense of a struggling sport here.
This was 1000% the right decision for this state and university.
