Would you take Fred back someday?

Fred leaves for the Bulls, makes a ton of cash, scratches his NBA itch but still feels he has unfinished business at ISU. Fives years from now at age 48 he wants to come back to ISU. Thoughts? Would Cyclone Nation welcome him back with open arms?

Alot of what ifs here, What if new coach doesn't miss a beat (possibly a low 2016-17) and wins a couple of B12 Championships and B12 Tourn's along with good NCAA showing, you don't disturb the applecart if progress is being made as much as we would like to have Fred back, most are replying on the emotions of what's going on. IMO welcome back, but possibly not with open arms depending on situation.

Remember that the average NBA coaching gig lasts less than 3 years. I want him to do well in the NBA but I wouldn't be surprised if he gets run out of town in a few years just like Thibodeau because he can't beat Lebron. Unless he becomes the next Phil Jackson or Greg Popovich, there is a decent chance that he could return someday.

Anyone questioning this should check out the tweets from the team to Fred. They obviously love and respect the guy, and are handling this with the utmost class. There's no easy way to leave, but Fred has obviously done it in a way that is far better than most.

They've erased any concerns I had with the way he handled his exit with them.
Fantastic stuff they're putting together.

If Fred returned, wouldn't Fred have a lot of explaining to do when recruiting?

Q: if I commit to Iowa State, can I be sure my coach won't leave for the NBA before I graduate?
A: trust me, it's out of my system

Q: suppose you do decide to leave for the NBA...will you be 100% candid about your aspirations?
A: absolutely, and Matt Thomas can vouch for that

Q: you coached the Chicago Bulls...why in the world did you leave them for Iowa State?
A: it's my dream job, duh

Q: that sounds familiar...
A: ...

What would you do, fire the current coach if Hoiberg decides he wants to coach ISU again? You will never get a good coach at ISU if the job is open to Hoiberg any time he wants it.

And, what happens if he gets bored again and pulls the rug out from under ISU for a second time? I'm a firm believer in the theory when someone tells you who they are, believe it. Therefore my answer would be no. If he wants to return to ISU he can buy a ticket and sit in the stands.

Yes. It is possible that the team struggles for 5 or 6 years, he gets his NBA itch scratched, and he comes back, a la Bill Snyder.

I think it's much more likely he retires and spends his days fishing and golfing. That's what I'd do with hundreds of millions in the bank.

On KFAN here this weekend, one of the hosts who went to Iowa was shocked Fred left. He was hosting with Trent Tucker, former Bull, and said the NBA will always be there, why leave now when ISU would win a championship.

Trent sort of put him in a box and said ISU will always be there again. Not that Trent knows any info, but he speaks a sort of truth. Win or lose with the Bulls, Fred could pretty much come back whenever he wants. Minus his successor being hugely successful.

IMO, it could be explained pretty easily by Fred.

It has always been a dream of his to coach in the NBA. The Heart Surgery this spring made it even more real that he needed to realize his dreams at this point in his life. One of those Life Changing Experiences.

This was not about money. Supposedly some big name donors made an offer to put up some big bucks to entice Fred to stay. Fred supposedly told Jamie, Nor renegotiation. This is not about money.

IMO, we should be no more upset than when one of our players leaves early to go to the pros. It sucks. But sometimes a person needs to follow their dreams And we need to accept it and move on.
