Would you take Fred back someday?

Only time will tell. It'll depend on his health, our success between now and then, and how he handles the rest of this exit. For a while, feelings will be hurt. Some don't like how this is being handled.

Ps, please don't read this as accusation or blame.

Of course we would. I think JP (or the AD at the time) would just have to make sure his NBA itch was fully scratched at that point.

I expect Fred to go from pro coach to GM to retirement at that point. Folks, he is not coming back. How many coaches return for a second stint at the same school in college bball?

Sure. But since he is so desperate to leave that he even interviewed with Orlando, he will never come back.

Maybe I'm trying too hard to "protect" Fred's reputation, but:

- I don't think he had any interest in the Orlando and New Orleans positions. I think he interviewed for those positions to "force" the Bulls to speed up the process because he, like all of us, wanted it to be done sooner, rather than later
- Fred leaving now is better than any other time. He leaves the new coach with a loaded roster and did what he could to give the new coach as much time as possible to jump start 16-17 recruiting. If you haven't seen the video of Orr's retirement, you should. Fred said (paraphrased) "Selfishly, I want (Johnny) back, but that wouldn't be the best thing for the long term success of the program right now". That group was losing 6 guys the next year, and had Orr left a year later, the new coach would have been totally screwed

The way this has gone down has sucked, no question, but I've never thought this was his final coaching job. The way it's played out is not his fault. The Bulls could have fired Thibs LONG ago, but decided to drag it out. Ultimately, they did what they should have done as soon as they were ousted from the playoffs (May 14th).

As to the OP? If the situation arises, yes, I would welcome him back with open arms.

For $5M a year?

A lot? I can name one just from our beloved university.

Of course if Fred wanted to come back we should be waiting with open arms.

But the real question is will Fred want to come back after how he is being ostracized by a very vocal set of fans?

Probably not. Most of the fans on this board are taking it as a personal attack that Fred doesn't actually believe Ames is the best place to be at the present moment. I've seen "**** Fred" and "he should just quit" and speculation that his family isn't behind his decision. It is just a sad sight to see.

That's fine to speculate, but those who think Fred just wanted out ASAP could be just as right as you...

Fred leaves for the Bulls, makes a ton of cash, scratches his NBA itch but still feels he has unfinished business at ISU. Fives years from now at age 48 he wants to come back to ISU. Thoughts? Would Cyclone Nation welcome him back with open arms?
If we were not doing well you'd be crazy not to want the mayor back

Maybe this is a lebron type move. Mayor leaves home, only to return more mature with more recruiting tools to bring a championship to ames

Taking LeBron back is working out well for Cleveland. I don't underestimate Fred but typical nba coaching means he is looking for a new job or retiring 3-4 years from now.

I'd take him back, but only if he would sign a contract for at least 5 years and have at least a 3 million dollar buyout to jump to the NBA or another school in college. Maybe even 5 million?

It wouldn't be worth it to me to bring him back if every single year we can't land any recruits because Fred is interviewing for several NBA jobs every spring.

He's probably done more for ISU athletics than anyone else. Anyone who says no is just butthurt or not that bright
