With Hamilton transferring we need Doug McDermott

I don't think playing for your father is a good idea. I think Doug and Greg made the right choice with UNI.

However, it does puzzle me a little bit why some people don't think he's good enough to take 1 of 13 scholarships yet is good enough for UNI... a top 25 team who's been better than ISU for a while now.

I think Doug was good enough for ISU... just chose UNI.

Because we've been down this road before (Eikmeier, among others) - yes, UNI is a top 25 team, but they can get away with using players such as McDermott's son because the MVC just isn't as physically demanding a league as the Big 12 is. Not saying they don't play physical in the MVC - what I'm saying is the overall talent in the MVC doesn't compare to the overall talent in the Big 12, and McDermott building a team that would be best suited to competing in the MVC is part of the reason why ISU basketball is in the utter mess that it is in right now.

Yes, UNI is a better team than ISU is right now - doesn't mean we should be pining for their roster because their roster would be eaten alive if it had to compete regularly in the Big 12.

Doug at ISU would put Mac in another no win situation. They made the right chioce.

Another dumb statement to be added to the "gems" throughout this week from people.

i don't understand how anyone thinks Greg signing Doug and using a scholarship would be a win-win for anyone. If he does that....every Mac hater would be bashing him for signing his son and giving him a free education. Even if he walks on and he can contribute, unless he makes big plays for the team he'd get crap like Lick does at UI. Regardless, Doug made the best decision for him.......he's a good, smart player and will contribute well in his years at UNI.

Maybe... the McDermotts know something we don't.
Perhaps the family conversation went something like this...

GMAC... Son, I think you better go to UNI
Doug... What for?
GMAC... Well, things aren't looking to good for me here in Ames...
Doug... Do you think you might get fired?
GMAC... (the stare!)
Doug... Well dad, there's probably always a job for y... OHHH! (I gotcha dad)

Trivia question - Anybody recall the last player (possibly the only one) to play hoops in a Cyclone uniform for his dad?

Well, there was John John, son of Maury John...

Correct. With all of the controversies in the program over the last 8 years, the biggest setback to the program was the health problem that ended Maury's career in his 3rd year on the job. He inherited a team that won 2 conference games the previous year - all seven coaches who have followed him took over a team with more conference wins the previous year. He proceeded to win 5 conference games followed by 7 the next year before the illness struck. It's a shame that we didn't get the opportunity to experience what having Maury John at Iowa State for another 10 years could have produced.

A player of Dougs caliber should never be signed by his father. He is not a sure thing, especially in this conference. I think this is very similar to Cody and Dan Hawkins. Same type of career projection, same type of program in the given sport. It is just not a smart thing to do.

Haha, why do you guys think I live in CF and not Ames?
Its ridiculous just how many more girls there are in Cedar Falls compared to Ames. There are nights I look across a bar in Ames and there are less than 5 girls. There's actually been zero before at Paddy's while there was about 20 guys there. How does this happen?

It's Paddy's. Cy's has the the women. So do Sips and Element in the Spring but I don't really like either one of those.

Did you really just say Cy's has the women? Some women yes but its still at least 65 % guys in there.

Well I would say that is a pretty good percentage relative to other bars. Very few single females go to Paddys from what I have seen. Besides that the quality at Cys is usually pretty good. I am more of a quality guy as opposed to quantity so maybe I don't notice sheer numbers.

The correct answer is Iowa City.

But seriously, I'd take Dough McDermott if he wanted to come to ISU. Would he help right away? Not at all. But give hime two or three years and he's quite possibly the next Adam Koch. And I'd take Adam Koch in a heartbeat.

Well obviously. The number of available viable mates there is ridiculous.

AGREE 100%! Who would want their son in a no win situation like that? Think CODY HAWKINS etc. etc.

Doug McDermott would probably have to play the 3, maybe the 4 spot in college.

On more than one occassion last night I remember the announcer commenting about how McDermott got abused defensively by SE Polk's player. The SE Polk player at least twice went right around Doug like he was standing still. And the SE Polk player was nothing special... won't be playing in college anyway.

I think Doug will score pretty well for UNI, mostly from the perimeter, but how is he going to be defensively?

Doug is not going to UNI because he doesn`t want to play for his dad. And it has nothing to do with being a scholarship player in the Big 12.

When are people going to get over Doug going to UNI. It is very rare for a D1 college player to go play for his dad.
If I were in his situation, I think I would do the same thing.
There is just too much unneeded pressure playing for your dad.

I don't know how rare it is. Kind of a hard subject to research. Just off the top of my head I can think of a few though......Pat Knight, Sean Sutton, Pete Maravich, Little Lick.......I'm sure there are quite a few others, and probably even more at smaller schools.

It could be just as likely that if you have a son who is capable of playing Division I, he does play for you as a head coach of a Division I school. Like I said.....it is hard to research.

Watching Doug play last night I can see why we didn't go after him. IMO he looks like an in between player. Too small for center and too slow for forward. He does have a decent outside shot and should fit in well at UNI. The Big 12 might have been a little tough for him.

This. He's too short to be a center and a smidge slow to be a forward in the big 12.

I disagree. He is a cross between a Chris Street and Ryan Bowen. Major recruiting mistake by Greg McDermott, and also Lick as well.
