I question whether Fred can get Hilton Magic back to the level it was when Johnny was here. My thoughts on why Hilton was so crazy and why it won't get to that level again.

1. When Johnny came onto the floor to the Tonight Show song, he would be running, jumping, pumping his fists at the crowd and the energy that he gave the fans was incredible. Fans were going nuts and the players hadn't even been introduced.
2. At the announcement of the players, the announcer would say Welcome to James H Hilton Colliseum for tonights game between Colorado and (he would hestitate and it would get deafening) your Iowa State Cyclones. It was so loud you could hardly hear Iowa State Cyclones. This was something that happened since there was no protocol of playing a video or any of that other crap. When the players were introduced, the energy was created by the announcer, again not videos or lights.
3. During the game Johnny was very animated and the crowd fed off of his emotion which he had even if the game was going ISU's way.
4. During timeouts, which there were a lot less and they were shorter, the fans yelled during the whole timeout and the band may play the fight song. The other team never had 1 second of low noise level to discuss their strategy. Now the timeouts are long and there is so many, we now have entertainment during them, dance squad, etc.
5. Students were not sitting together, but were spread out. That helped in getting the older people involved in the game. There were no special chants, everybody just yelled as loud as they could.
6. ISU was the underdog, but with the crowd, it gave them an advantage that no other school had.
7. Style of play Orr coached. Lots of action and up and down play.

I was 7 rows up behind the basket during the Iowa game with Lafester being the hero. I could turn to my wife and yell in her ear and she couldn't hear one word I would say. It was that way almost the entire game, not just 30 seconds out of every 5 minutes.

My expectations of what Hilton Magic can be have been lowered over the years. I hope Fred can find a way to energize the fans. He hasn't shown much emotion and seems to be very calculated and straight-faced.

My hope is he has a plan to energize the fans. If he isn't willing to show his emotions, he will need to allow the players to show emotions or generate them by style of play, etc.

I read your first paragraph, didn't bother with the rest..........Hell Yes it can be back.......who cares about the here's Johnny thing, we've got.....heeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrreessssssss FREDDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :jimlad:

Fred is very aware of what its going to take to get Hilton Magic back. He even said something about it in his press conference. He wants it back more than anybody and I believe it will be back, maybe not next year, but sooner than later IMO. I'm excited and can't wait!

Great list of points. With those things in mind, it is probably impossible to recreate Hilton Magic from its heyday; however, I have no doubt that the Mayor's presence will create a level of excitement we haven't seen since Floyd and Eustachy.

Agreed with Floyd and Eustachy era level of excitement. One thing Fred will have as an advantage is the place is going to be full.

Hell yes it will be back. If nothing else because Fred is back. Please can we just go back to a regular student section though so Hilton Magic can really work!

As bad as I want it back, I don't think it will be back as long as Cyclone Alley exists...or not to what it used to be. I'm a student and HATE CA. I may not go to as many games as I should (or want to) but when I do, I don't even try to get into CA. It's a freaking joke. A majority of the 'fans' who sit there couldn't care less what's going on on the court. They need to make it like football student section and it would be MUCH better....

that's the thing i've always sat and wondered...i mean some of them have to be the same kids right?!? how can the student section at the football games be SO AWESOME and then get out "fanned" so to speak by their elders at basketball games?

Some of the kids may be the same, but not the majority. We all know the students get loaded and go to the football games. We need the same for basketball. Maybe we should start tailgating for basketball games too?? I know for a fact that the organization of cyclone alley drives students away...it's sad really. They really need to open up those seats to real fans who appreciate good basketball (and beer) instead of students who enjoy organized chants and wearing the same color shirts.

Of course it can be.

Don't forget that we (the fans) have just as much ownership in making it happen as Fred.

I think part of the initial idea behind cyclone alley was to get students free sponsored things. That said, I think Cyclone Alley is an idea that needs to be gotten rid of as well. I personally think that if they want to get the students loud, they need to get Cyclone Alley sponsored by a beer company, give a free beer or two to the students that are 21 and start serving it in Hilton. (Or we could just tailgate for basketball games like it was mentioned here before)

As a side note guys, this forum has been great to read the past few days. CF and CW earned a new reader and forum-er from the news and everything since saturday.

Welcome aboard!

I think getting students drunk to get a louder atmosphere is probably not the message that the administration is looking for.

I'm not sure if it will ever be the same. It's a different time. It can be outstanding though and Freddy plus winning will get us there quickly.

That's awesome enough for me!!

I think the crowds and enthusiasm that Fred brings are going to get us off to a great start. Conference opponents haven't seen Hilton this energized in years. I understand that we're not winning the conference this year and all, but we're going to start having a home court advantage again. I miss that.

Probably not...it's not that I don't have faith in Fred because I definitely do. I haven't been this excited about a hire in a while. I'm just thinking that something needs to be done about excitement level and bringing back the magic. There are students like friends of mine that go to CA for the free stuff and really don't do much beyond that. Then there are people like me who are not students (I am teaching myself web design and development) but are incredibly passionate who are relegated to the upper section because we don't have a shirt and get looked at weirdly for cheering and etc. I want to be down there with the passionate students and frankly would rather relegate the unpassionate to the upper section.

I agree. I think a seating change to the old way (whatever that exactly was)would be a good thing, and having a highly popular, hometown hero coach won't hurt either. They may lose some revenue initially in their ability to charge more for the floor level seats, but I would bet they could make up for it by making the atmosphere better......if Hilton was rocking like it used to be, $199 season tickets might sell just as well as the $99 ones are now.

The students behind the visitors bench, and the pep band in that corner as well, made it really tough on the opposing team - especially during time outs. They were literally surrounded.

Reality is that the big donors aren't going to give up those seats, period. And the athletic department isn't going to give up the revenue generated by the Applebee's Apple Shuffle or Pump up the Pasta/Burrito.

The "good old days" of Hilton Magic are gone but we can still go and make a lot of noise and influence the game.
