Why didn't the Big 4 Classic work?

Yes, the date is tough. Not many people looking for another thing to do this time of year. Heck...we have two Christmas parties we're invited to on this date. Yet even with that hurdle, it has still sold very, very well.

Additionallly, the Iowa vs Iowa St BB game in Iowa City didn't sellout until the day of so I don't know where people get this idea that the event should sellout quickly. Just because you say it should??

The CyHawk game in Iowa City didn't sell out because of ....wait for it... wait for it... wait for it.... the lack of fan enthusiasm!

Saying the Well is not a good basketball arena does not equate to having contempt for Des Moines hosting in the Tourney.

Exactly! I took in all of the games last time even though I knew my seats were going to suck. The atmosphere around downtown that Thursday and Saturday was top notch!

It is remarkable how much contempt ISU fans have for Des Moines hosting the NCAA tournament in basketball.

TOE will probably end up with the Des Moines/KC/Twin Cities path in the tourney...

I've read the whole thread and haven't seen any contempt for DM hosting the tourney, just not a lot of us think the Big 4 classic is that great of a event.

So the two power 5 schools in the state play head-to-head and it doesn't sellout. Note: ISU fans can buy tix too.

Yet according some of you, a game against mid-majors should sellout in a matter of hours and if it doesn't, it is a failure (even if it eventually normally sells out or is close to it).

That makes little sense

I can only speak for myself but:
1. I ain't stepping foot in Iowa City
2. I ain't giving the TOE my ticket money

I don't like hawks why would I want to be around them and support their athletic program.

Comparing a game on a thursday night in one of the teams' home arenas to a game on a saturday in the middle of a much larger city seems like a poor one.

Also I dont want to go to Iowa City for similar reasons i dont have a desire to go to basically a road game in Des Moines. Most don't.

That is an odd take.

So you don't think our team sees, hears, and appreciates when we go to road games??? You're there supporting ISU, not Iowa.

Yes, I realize the differences, but it is still naive for anyone on here to state the Big 4 should sellout in hours. They have zero other like events to point to as evidence this is a realistic expectation.

You're the one declaring an event a 'success' based purely on it selling 13k tickets when it would sell 25-30k tickets if the games were at Hilton\Carver.

Let's be honest, this thread should have been one comment long .

Why did the Big 4 Classic fail?

Because you must have all 4 teams participate. Iowa dropped out.

/thread

Separate thread - Why I don't didn't personally like the Big 4 Classic (95% of the comments address this).

The two questions can be, and are mutually exclusive questions IMO and since the event was successful from a tix sales standpoint, makes more sense to be separate discussions.

I've been to Carver for hoops and their fans are just rude, try to be civil ans they just turn into jackasses. I was in school last time I went to IC for a FB game that was kind of fun because I went in a group of about 20. I'm perfectly fine never spending another dime of my money in Iowa City in less I need medical care. So when is the last time you've went over to IC for a game since your acting so sanctimonious?

Bump for @capitalcityguy

No, Chris Connolly who manages Wells Fargo declares it a successful event. They hate to lose this.

WFA is not the only stakeholder and thus doesnt determine if the event is a success.

You could host this **** at a local high school, sell out the small gym, and they'd consider it a successful event for them as well. Doesnt make the event a success for all involved.

Besides, do you really expect to see the guy at WFA publicly shitting on an event he still has to sell tickets to? If he was openly saying it wasnt successful that'd be pretty huge.
