That’s about exactly where I am at. I am amazed at this perspective that all is well and we just need to give it more time. We had great seasons previously and this coaching staff is above accountability according to certain individuals here. I have never said I think Matt C should be fired. I just think he needs some incentive clearly to enact some sweeping reforms.

I should not be surprised. There is a clearly a powerful cult of personality that accompanies certain coaches. This unrelenting adulation even transcends winning percentage. I love how emotional everyone got over the simple factual mention of the worst basketball season record in school history.

I wonder if a Larry Eustachy type scandal came up if these rabid followers would still be so supportive and attack anyone who suggests how the event is bad for Iowa State as a program?

The answer seems to be unequivocally YES they would.
He has big incentives tied to team performance already.

Been noticing lack of vertical routes with defenses packed into first ten yards since Oklahoma game.

This is the biggest strategic flaw of the offense. If you never try to pass more than 5 yards downfield, the defense only has to defend a small area. It's like goal line defense, field is constricted. And that in turn makes it EASIER to defend the run too. It's like shooting yourself in the foot, and then the other foot too.

I'm not saying go crazy airing it out every other play, but even a few incomplete deep balls loosens things up a bit.

Now, that isn't the biggest problem with the offense, but it is one of the top 5 problems.

Is this really a valid reason? It's not like we are relying on a ton of true freshman or sophomores. And with NIL & portal young or inexperienced guys need to play at a high level.

Qb - RS So.
Rb - RS Jr or Frosh.
WR - RS Sr / RS Sr / Soph.
OL - RS Sr / RS Jr x 3 / RS Soph.
TE - RS Jr.

DL - RS Sr / RS Sr / RS Jr.
LB - RS Sr / RS Sr / RS Sr x2 & Fr
CB - So / RS Jr.
S - RS Sr / So / RS Fr & Fr.
P - Fr.
K - Fr.
DS - RS Sr.

The reality is when guys have been in our system 3 or more years (RS Soph)- they should be ready to step in.

The other reality is we should NEVER have to rely on a freshman kicker from day 1.

I am willing to give Campbell some slack because he has done a great job. But I think they really have some serious soul searching to do during the Dec/Jan period to get ISU FB back on track.

lol that jeff guy just went through and dumbed like 5 of my posts at random in retribution for being dumbed for actual dumb things. Gotta love it lol. The ignore list just keeps on growing.

What have you been an ISU fan for like 5 years or less? ISU is a bad hire post-Campbell away from another century of irrelevance. I'd rather bicker about not breaking .500 than go back to being resigned to 3rd straight 3-9 year with a recruiting class that sits behind Tulsa and UTSA
Birth.

Fan since birth.

Dad had full ride at ISU and regrettably had to transfer out because that staff showed similar tendencies to this one.

Turned down a full-ride from Iowa to attend ISU.

I was at ISU for Walden and DMac.

Hate to tell you, but after this season we're probably headed that way anyhow with these guys.

We're predictable, boring, and unwilling to make adjustments on offense. Our special teams remain atrocious.

Controlling the quality, I would imagine
Stop and think of how many math, statistics, and even economics grad students we have on campus that could go through the game data and apply probabilities and game theory to our offensive philosophy to make us more efficient and unpredictable.

And our coach is still blaming execution.

I absolutely cannot believe this crap.

Our opponents know what is coming, especially in the red zone.

I can only imagine how predictable we become down there due to risk aversion.

We're a science and technology school and we're losing because our staff doesn't understand probabilities.

Careful now, there's a lotta folks that hated that.

Personally I thought it looked sharp when used sparingly, but I understand not liking it.

I also think the black unis should be retired after being disgraced this year.
Honestly, that is one of the few things I think this staff has gotten right.

Its easily a top 3 problem because its beyond what you even decribe.

A line backer doesn't have to worry about getting depth on his drop because there's a short cross coming or a quick slant - there's no concern then. A line backer who doesn't have to bail is more likely to come down hill which means they are on an offensive linemen quicker coming to the second.

There are 2-3 massive flaws right now IMO.

A) We have zero diversity in our run game. Like, zero. I've gone thru old games and watched and its amazing. We might have the most simple scheme ever, which you'd think it make blocking easier but it actually makes it harder because the defense has good players and coaches too. And it becomes even more simple when you factor in how rare the QB run is this year. Without that tiny wrinkle we are the definition of a one trick pony.

B) We are more predictable then the sun rises in the east. In terms of snap count, tempo, play calling, etc. Its almost amazing but in a bad way.

C) The point about a lack of diversity in the route tree is also incredible - again in a bad way.

If you thought we struggled this year, just wait till next year. The pipeline for o-line and wr's is not very good. Our recruiting has a lot of ?'s and concerned what NIL is going to do with some of our star players this year.
What? The redshirt guys are considered higher ranked than anyone on the field now

Blowing it all up and starting over tends to screw the whole thing up forever, so I won't advocate for that. Continuity and shared vision matter. I do think the higher-level position assistants who aren't showing any development need to be replaced, and should be replaced from outside the program. The two biggest offenders there to me are Myers and Gordon.

As for OC, I'd lean towards a new face here as well, but at minimum -- if you keep Manning, then Campbell needs to get out of the way. It's clear this team did not put out the best offense for the players they have, nor play the best game for their players. Let the 'ideal state' goals disappear and let your coaches find out what works best and utilize it to potential on the field.

Last, it would be nice to just see our system generally simplified. We don't need all of this time-choking motion. We don't need overly complicated playcalls that are leading to delays and timeouts being used in dumb ways. We don't need troublesome counts leading to tons of false starts. Dumb the game down as far as possible to minimize these silly, avoidable mistakes we see every single game. Removing opportunities for failure will result in better execution.

I thought we hired a special teams co. in the last offseason? If not, that is a must. Additionally, CMC either has too much on his plate or isn't competent enough to handle the game management. Campbell need a game management analyst, happens every game where Campbell takes way too long to make a decision on sending out special teams or not. Speaking of... why did the clock continue to run after Dekkers ran out of bounds on our last possession before we punted?

Anyone coaching in the mid-major level with ties to Mt Vernon or Campbell and putting up good offensive numbers?

A total offensive overhaul is needed. QB coach, o-line coach, offensive cordinator.. Scheelhaase get a pass because he is by far and away the #1 recruiter on the team. I would love to see him retained. Everyone else has no reason to stay. QB play has been BAD with regression compared to intial results. o-line needed to be fixed in 2020.. Manning's offense was covered up SOOOO much by the NFL ROTY (Brecce Hall).

Prior to this year, how much did our RS So QB, RS Jr or Fr RB, RS Jr TE, 2 of the RS Jr OL play?(almost half of our starters on offense, including some at the most important offensive positions on the field)

You can be in the program for 3-4 years but if you haven’t PLAYED, it doesn’t really mean much. Look at Iowa, you’d think Petras was an AA for as well as Kirk says he does in practice. When the lights come on he stinks!
But if you are going to use inexperience as an excuse- its going to be an excuse EVERY year. The days of have super seniors or guys being able to take a 5th covid year are not the norm. With NIL & transfer portal rosters are going to have much more turnover- so experience in your system will be critical. The saying RELOAD vs. rebuild is more meaningful in 2022 than ever before and will continue to determine which programs succeed.

QB
I agree QB is a tough position to know what you have until he takes game snaps. But this is Dekkers 3rd year in the program. I would have hoped he was ready to be an average Big12 QB. Kempf & Purdy were ready for game snaps and they had far less time in ISU's system. I am far from giving up on Dekkers, but he really needs to be coached up this off season. His accuracy is sub-par and a big reason is mechanics.

RB
IMO experience is RB is pretty meaningless. If a kid is going to be an upper tier back, he has it day 1. Sure he might not have great pass blocking skills, but a staff can work around that. Norton is a great example of a true freshman being ready. Injuries derailed both Norton & Brock's season- but I don't think RB talent was an issue on this year's roster.

OL
There is no good reason (other than coaching) why our this unit struggled. It is the most experienced position group on the team. Here are # of starts coming into 2022 season- Downing: 26 Starts, Simmons: 24 Starts, Hufford: 8 Starts, Remsburg: 7 starts, Miller: 1 start.

WR
We have a lot of experience in this group with Xavier & Noel being returning starters. Plus Stanley, Shaw and Wilson had a combined 10 seasons of D1 ball.

TE
Sure Hanika & Dean had basically zero TE experience behind Kolar & Allen. But they had been on the ISU team 2 & 3 years respectively. I didn't expect them to play at Kolar level, but I thought they would be solid blockers and average TE's. My expectation was that Steel Sharpens Steel and both would grown their games because they competed & learned from Kolar/Allen

I understand about 90% of Campbell's coach speak and have no issue with it. But the mantra that we are young & inexperienced is BS. Top 20 programs have the ability to reload.

To be honest, Campbell's talk of inexperience for me is coach speak for either:
  • recruiting failures or
  • poor development
I realize what I am saying is harsh & I love Campbell as ISU's coach. I hope he is here for the next 20 years! Because I think he is an outstanding person & leader of young men. But, he has some big decisions this off-season to get ISU back to the program that develops 3 star players into All-Big12 players and competes for Big12 Championships.

Definitely need to hire a special teams coach and replace Manning at the OC position. I was at the game Saturday and as I was leaving the stadium walking down the Northwest ramp towards gate 1 the team was heading to the locker room and someone down by the barricades yelled at a player or coach, didn't hear what the person said but a coach or staff member said something along the lines of why don't I go get him so you can say it to his face and had to be held back. was wondering if anyone else witnessed this. I know we are losing and that sucks but this kind of behavior is ridiculous.
