Wally Burnham Retires

Wally could still be a big aset for the cyclones this next season and a half. Hopefully he let's the new DC pick his brain. Wally definitely had things that worked.

Thanks, Wally!
Same sentiment here: what would have happened if the offense had been much better. Just see Texas game for example.

Yeah, he and the D usually overachieved. I remember the 2010 Missouri Game (remember the yellow jerseys?) and Tiller was the QB and Missouri was a very hot/high potent offense and he really did his part to stop that...just no offense that day.

Dude was wizard. You knew things were going **** when people here started asking why wally wasnt paying. He didnt pay because the defense was solid.

At the keg stand years ago. I think it was his second year at ISU. Some jerkoff tells Rhoads the only reason we went to a bowl game was because of Chizik's players.
Wally comes unglued and was ready to throw down. We yanked him over by our table and told him to calm down, hows it going, you're doing a great job. One of our guy's said, hey Wally let me buy you a beer, what's your flavor? Wally sternly looked at him and goes, cranberry vodka, yeah I drink cranberry, what, does that make me a ***** (think name for cat)? We're all like, whoa, calm down buddy, we're on your side.
He apologized and said Chizik is an ***. He stayed an shot the **** with us for quite a while that night.
Cool old dude. Type of guy I'd want on my side.

That might be the best story I've ever heard on here.

I sort of wish that little punk from West Virginia had actually gone after Wally. He'd probably have regretted it.

He put some pretty good defenses on the field early in his tenure. Too bad they never lined up with a competent offense at the same time. Always sad to see the old war horse go out to pasture. He is probably like an encyclopedia of coaching in the history of college football at this point given his connections and longevity in the field. Thanks, coach, for making your last stop in Ames (and Tempe).

Bravo for Wally! I hope he enjoys his retirement as much as I am enjoying mine. I only met Wally once where I had the opportunity to visit with him. We actually talked football. He was very candid and a true gentleman. I loved the fact that I heard absolutely no coach speak.

Had the pleasure of working with Wally the last two years. Great guy, got a lot of memories

A true leader of men, thanks for being a Cyclone Wally! If only the offenses would have been half as productive during his tenure.

It always ****** me off when some self proclaimed Cyclone fan said, "But what about Wally's defense." when fans were listing reasons for a cyclone loss. Wally's defenses were some of the most sound at Iowa State since the early 80s.

Thanks Wally ! Enjoy retirement !

Im never going to forget Wally coaching a high school kid after the Saturday summer camp was over. Just he and the kid off to the side while everyone else was shaking hands with CPR and walking off the practice field.
