Wally Burnham Retires

Some will complain about his schemes and philosophy (bend don't break etc.) Truth is, he put some pretty good defenses on the field. Made the most of what he had to work with. Got very little help from the offense. Enjoy retirement Wally. It was fun having you as a Cyclone for a few years.

Thanks Wally. I am proud that you were a coach for ISU.

On a side note, I am curiously watching Mark Ritcht's hires at Miami. I wouldn't be surprised if Shane showed up on their staff.

THIS! I always wondered how much "better" our defense would have been had our offense been above average.

He had some of the best LB's in ISU history (Knott, AK, JG) all played in the NFL. Thank you, Wally!

Wally did a great job for us. He won many games for us and was one of the primary reasons for a couple of our bowl seasons! Great DC, just didn't have the players some years.

Enjoy retirement Wally!

I appreciate an awful lot of what that entire past staff did, even though things didn't succeed anywhere near any of our expectations. Wally was a huge part of why I admired that staff. I think if he'd had more help from the OC's that continued to struggle he'd have easily been considered by many outside of ISU to be one of the best DC's in football. Good luck, Wally! And enjoy your retirement!

Wally really was a gem. All but one year, I thought his defenses were pretty darn good.

He was always fun to listen to being interviewed and sure seemed to enjoy coaching kids.

Thanks, Wally!
Same sentiment here: what would have happened if the offense had been much better. Just see Texas game for example.

Thanks for all your hard work, Wally. Take it easy now. Have a cold beverage in the warm sun.

At the keg stand years ago. I think it was his second year at ISU. Some jerkoff tells Rhoads the only reason we went to a bowl game was because of Chizik's players.
Wally comes unglued and was ready to throw down. We yanked him over by our table and told him to calm down, hows it going, you're doing a great job. One of our guy's said, hey Wally let me buy you a beer, what's your flavor? Wally sternly looked at him and goes, cranberry vodka, yeah I drink cranberry, what, does that make me a ***** (think name for cat)? We're all like, whoa, calm down buddy, we're on your side.
He apologized and said Chizik is an ***. He stayed an shot the **** with us for quite a while that night.
Cool old dude. Type of guy I'd want on my side.
