They have used the "walker sounds in the distance, GETTING CLOSER" effect as well. But having a walker sneak up on Merle instead of him hearing it coming is much more of a shock and makes better TV.

I thought so too, but on my drive back home yesterday they were interviewing her on the radio. Asked about her and Darryl and she said she was getting messages from girls to stay away from "their man". She then went on to say they're happy together. It still could be false but she didn't make it seem that way.
