Virginia Tech Dual on Saturday

The good news for Meeks is that wrestling Chishko and then Geo Martinez (Boise) will be a good barometer if he can even go 1-1. Both are really tough guys, that going 0-2 isn't the end of the world, but a win would probably help the coaching staff's confidence in leaving the redshirt on Dante.

What happened against Martinez last year gives him some slack, I think. He went out and lost to a freshman in an early dual and everybody freaked out. But then Martinez turned out to be one of the top 141 pounders in the country. And looking at Chisko it is very possible he'll also end up a top guy this year. While Meeks hasn't lived up to expectations the past few years, a lot of that is due to plain bad luck from running in to really good wrestlers just before they become highly ranked.

That said, while I think that redshirting should be the default option, I don't believe that everybody needs it nowadays since kids come in much more developed both technically and physically than they used to. And with injuries/getting burnt out a successful fifth year is never a sure thing. So while I'd like for the team to be able to redshirt Dante, and I want Meeks to be successful, I do think he needs to prove it on the mat these first few meets or the redshirt should come off.

As much as I like Dante's excitement on the mat, I want John to have success. He has the talent and needs to find a way to take what happens in practice room to the meets. We have options with Dante and we need to keep them options open while Meeks and Gabe are still here.

Its too bad they won't be doing a liveblog this year. I really liked those. Especially at bigger tournaments where even if you shelled out for a video feed it was helpful knowing what mat to watch.

My predictions:

125: Nathan Boston v Joey Dance
LBD – Could easily be worse, but I think Boston will keep it relatively close. I’ll go with 10-5.
0-3

133: Earl Hall v Kevin Norstrem
WBM – Hope Earl is on his attacks and scores lots of points. 14-5
4-3

141: John Meeks v Solomon Chisko
WBD – It looks like John gets the nod here. IMO, this is a very big match for John. A win could give him some confidence and get going. A loss could lead to the opposite and Dante not redshirting. Going more with heart than brain here. 5-4
7-3

149: Blayne Briceno v Sal Mastriani
LBF – Mastriani is good. Hope Gabe is healthy soon.
7-9

157: Logan Breitenbach v Nick Brascetta
LBF – Brascetta is very good.
7-15

165: Tanner Weatherman v David McFadden
WBM: McFadden is a very talented freshman, but Weatherman needs to show his dominance here. Time to see if the move down is as beneficial as I am hoping. 12-4
11-9

174: Lelund Weatherspoon v Zach Epperly
LBD: Talk about an early season test. I think the move down a weight will be even better for Lelund. I hope he can keep it close. Will be a good barometer. 5-2
11-12

184: Dane Pestano v Austin Gabel
LBM: Hope he can keep it to a decision. 12-3
11-16

197: Duke Egli v Jared Haught
LBM: Any word on how long Marcus will be out? I hope he can stay off his back. 14-4
11-20

HWT: Quean Smith v Ty Walz
LBM: Walz showed he is a legit title threat with his All Star performance against Coon. Could easily see this as a pin, but will go with the major. 11-3

Final team score: ISU 11 VaTech 24

Really looking forward to this today. Here is what I see happening:

125 - Boston/Dance: Dance is a top tier guy, and expect him to win, but I'm really interested to watch Boston compete. I don't think this will be a blowout

133 - Hall/Norstrem: Norstrem is no push over. Hall has been pushed real hard in practice (depending on who you talk to, he's actually been getting beat). I think Earl will be excited to wrestle someone else, and expect some high flying funk. BP from Earl here

141 - Meeks/Chisko: Please, please, please get it done Meeks. I actually think he should win this. I want to see him be aggressive early, push tempo, but I don't think he will unfortunately. Expect a tight one going either way

149 - Briceno/Mastriani: Boy, how I wish Gabe wasn't suspended. We lose here

157 - Breitenbach/Brascetta: let's move on to 165

165 - Weatherman/McFadden: Ok...this is something I've been waiting to see since I first heard Tanner was moving down. Kid was wrestling 184 2 years ago. Now, I think 84 was too high for him, but 165 is light. Could be good or not. Hoping it's good, and we see domination from the start here. I expect BP.

174 - Wearherspoon/Epperly: One of the most intriguing matches of the meet for me. Epperly is really good, but he didn't look good at NWCA. Granted, that was against Crutchmer, but still. I think Spoon has the ability to surprise here.

184 - Pestano/Gabel: Could be a good one. Actually like Pestano to get it done

197 - Egli/Haught: Another possibly for a good, tough match. Like Egli here too, but we probably won't get both 184 and 197. Wish Harrington was here

HWT - Smith/Walz: Walz is a ******* beast. I watched him destroy Coon in the NWCA. Just give me some entertaining lateral drop attempt. Quan might pull it off with that move...he might not (most likely)...but at least it will be entertaining

Why aren't they doing the liveblog this year? Who did it last year? That is a considerable step back IMO. Someone with the team should be able to do this.

Yeah, when the schedule was released I saw three or four dual losses for us this season and this is one of them. Especially with Moreno and Harrington out.

Unfortunately, it will be a bloodbath. Meeks is still Meeks and nothing has changed....high expectations only to disappoint. KJ 7 yrs in and program on the rise??!! Time to walk the walk.

Seriously? We are down two of our better wrestlers and you come with this? With those two this is a very different dual.

Please, please, go somewhere else with that attitude.

I don't know if Meeks will get it done. He seems like a head case (not meaning this negatively). But just think of the possibility if he can overcome this. It's because of attitudes like yours that Meeks was pushed onto the mat before he was ready. This action completely derailed his development. I'm sure KJ would take it back if he could.

Headcase makes it sound like he's a psycho. You probably didn't mean it that way, but still. I would say he's just in his own head too much. He doesn't look confident and he's overthinking everything out on the mat. Just my opinion.

My bad...so if VT wins, there is an asterisk by the loss. It's because of attitudes like yours that there are so many excuses and apathy has set in. Don't make me pull up NCAA Tourney results to back it up.

I agree, we should easily beat a top 5 team with two of our starters suspended and another one ineligible until the second semester.

You actually have it 30-11. You aren't reflecting a predicted pin at 157 then stopped counting those 6 points.

That said, I think we'll be more competitive. I will go with something like 25-12.
