The good news for Meeks is that wrestling Chishko and then Geo Martinez (Boise) will be a good barometer if he can even go 1-1. Both are really tough guys, that going 0-2 isn't the end of the world, but a win would probably help the coaching staff's confidence in leaving the redshirt on Dante.
What happened against Martinez last year gives him some slack, I think. He went out and lost to a freshman in an early dual and everybody freaked out. But then Martinez turned out to be one of the top 141 pounders in the country. And looking at Chisko it is very possible he'll also end up a top guy this year. While Meeks hasn't lived up to expectations the past few years, a lot of that is due to plain bad luck from running in to really good wrestlers just before they become highly ranked.
That said, while I think that redshirting should be the default option, I don't believe that everybody needs it nowadays since kids come in much more developed both technically and physically than they used to. And with injuries/getting burnt out a successful fifth year is never a sure thing. So while I'd like for the team to be able to redshirt Dante, and I want Meeks to be successful, I do think he needs to prove it on the mat these first few meets or the redshirt should come off.
