Vasectomy

Define "not too expensive." I think mine was like $5000 about 6 or 7 years ago. So not expensive by surgery standards, but not pocket change either. And like you said insurance doesn't cover a cent.

And the surgery is 3-4 hours, you're awake the whole time so it's outpatient, recovery is worse, and it's not 100% effective (mine was not).

If a couple is sure they don't want any more kids, vasectomy is the best way to go about it IMO. But it's also a terrible idea for "temporary" or "I'm mad at my wife" contraception.
I went to a guy in Oklahoma who only does reversals and it was about $1000 IIRC. It was about 7 or 8 years ago.

Drove straight down and back the same day which was not recommended.

Had mine in the mid 90's after two kids. Wife at the time kept saying make sure that I'm doing it for myself. She filed 60 days later which I didn't see coming to be with a coworker who she is still with today. No regrets though as most of the girls I dated going forward appreciated I was shooting blanks. Married again 15 years ago and gained two more kids and now have four grandkids. Life is good.

Definitely talk to the wife. She may say no since you can sleep with your secretary and not worry about knocking her up.

About 8 years ago, I had it all set up for March madness. Procedure went fine. What happened next? Frosted tips and UAB. First game of the first day. What a disaster.

Had 4 healthy kids already and didn't want to deal with another miscarriage so I set up an appointment. Had it done on a Friday, took it easy then was paged to a rescue call on Monday. Tromping around in a ripped field while loading up a patient with a dislocated hip resulted in soreness for a few days. Have had no problems since.
Fast forward 15 years, wife always wanted to do foster care so we took the training. She picked up our second foster child at the hospital at 2 days old and now 2 years later, we're close to finalizing adoption. Got a vasectomy and still bring home a child. LOL

My niece is in the process of fostering a young girl (6yrs old ) I think. She has made quite the change from Thanksgiving lot friendlier at Christmas, huge change though coming into a a strange house with a bunch of adults that you don't know. She seems like a nice kid I hope things wok out for her and them however it ends up.

Curious how many of these stories are a traditional vasectomy versus a scalpelless procedure. Mine was scalpelless and I had a little bit of achiness but was definitely ready to go back to work on Monday after the Friday procedure. I never really even had to ice the area. If you are uncomfortable about everything that is going on including being shaved by a nurse just take the offered valium. Besides being totally relaxed can help there be less residual discomfort.

My vasectomy experience was pretty awful. The surgery went okay, but then I developed painful hematomas in both areas of incision. Both ball sacks swole to the size of a baseball, were black and blue and extremely tender. I think my surgery was more of an outlier though, most procedures aren't like that

I've got mine scheduled with the Iowa Clinic next Friday - anyone else getting a March Madness snip snip?

Any advice other than have some frozen peas on-hand?

No advice needed. It's quick and easy. That's where I had mine done.

Maybe keep a pillow on your lap while watching basketball in case a cat decides to jump on you.

Even if you are feeling well DON'T over do it! Plant your ass on the couch and enjoy the weekend. That was the best advice I was given before I got mine done. That and have some edibles on hand :)

Drinks and snacks. You're going to need drinks and snacks. And, as others have said, don't over-do it, even if you feel like you can. Play it up.
