You have GOT to be kidding me. Gag me with a spoon! Let us all sit around the campfire, hold hands and sing "Kumbayah" shall we? When Ankeny with two of the smaller schools in 4A starts to get their a$$es handed to them time and time again from schools they regularly beat for the last 30 years then come and talk to me.

There will be very few Championships garnered by Ankeny in the foreseeable future........ Ask, Newton!!! IB

Question for the people claiming all catholic schools students are catholic....

How can you even assume that?

Even if the athletes that we're previously named that went d-1, how do you truly know they are catholic unless you know them?

Not the case at all. They have split the city in two, both with old and new areas of Ankeny. They have tried and done a pretty good job of splitting the economic areas of Ankeny pretty equally. They have also stated that they will not allow kids who live in on area to request a change to the high school they want. This is to make sure that the good athletes do not all end up at one school over the other. My kid is only in 1st grade, we can see the 1st new Ankeny Hawks High School from our back yard, but the way the boundaries are drawn, my son will go to Ankeny Centennial Jaguars High School on the other side of town. My petition would be rejected if I tried to get him to go to Ankeny High. I am fine with that, at least he will never be a Hawk:twitcy:. As for sports, the 8th grade and Freshmen programs at Ankeny High are already split, and Ankeny Freshmen who will go to Ankeny Centennial in 2013 are already competing as Ankeny Centennial. As a matter of Fact the Ankeny Centennial Girls Fresheman Basketball team just beat Lincoln 63-16 the other night. Also, with the split 8th and 9th grade teams there appears to be more kids in sports at Ankeny Centennial than at Ankeny High at this time. Something I think they thought was going to be the opposite when the plans were put together. Also the Kindergarten class in Ankney is Around 850 kids this year, my sons class last year was just short of 800, and the town is still growing, in 10 years both the Ankney High Schools will have 1700 kids grades 9-12, so ther athletic teams will continue to both be just fine. Both these high schools will quickly be just as big as Ankeny High is right now. What Ankeny has done is essentially open up more opportunities to kids in not just sports, but all extrcurricular activities.

Ankeny's population the last three years is almost stagnant prior to the previous 7 years. 1700 kids for two high-schools in 10 years when the previous 10 years don't come close to that are you whacked/ Whatever it is you are smoking please pass it around!!!

They're not.

Like I've already stated; Catholic schools recruit 100% of their students 100% of the time. If there was rampant "recruiting" in the sense that the OP is discussing then Catholic schools would be turning out lots of non Catholic athletes, right? Except they're not. There's nothing insidious about Catholic kids going to Catholic schools, is there?

I can't speak to wartknights post but I stand by mine. You can believe me, or not.

Yeah, they got to them really early. I'm sure coaches know which kindergartners and 1st graders are the top prospects.

Tommy Gaul -- Holy Trinity Elementary/Middle School
Drew Zaun -- St Pius X Elementary/Middle School
Connor Bravard -- Sacred Heart Elementary/Middle School
Jason McMurray -- Sacred Heart Elementary/Middle School
Brad Chelleen -- Holy Trinity Elementary/Middle School
Ben Boesen -- Holy Trinity Elementary/Middle School
Amara Darboh -- Holy Trinity Elementary/Middle School
Jake Yacinich -- Holy Trinity Elementary/Middle School

So you're saying Darboh and Bravard never attended DMPSchools?

Just because a kid goes to Catholic school for four years doesn't mean that he wasn't recruited, they just got to them early. You think High School coaches aren't aware of who the top 7th and 8th graders are? Or other players and parents? Most of the rectuiting is done by the kids and parents, often at the request of the coach... There were multiple area schools trying to get my brother to transfer and my ex-wife experienced the same thing in the Cedar Rapids area.

Why would you believe anything your EX WIFE says!!! IB

Well, I can't remember the last time my brother ever went to ANY church and Dowling sure came after him pretty hard.

You can think what you want the town of Ankeny is expected to almost double in 15-20 years, they are growing. As I said this years kindergarten class and 1st grade class equal about 1650 kids, add two more classes like that and in 7-10 years ankeny will have about 1600 to 1700 kids per high school that is what the schools are now. Ankeny is not stagnent. They are growing South and North. Also growing East of the intestate. I have nothing against other communities as Johnston and Waukee are growing also, Waukee plans to go to two High School System I belive, Johnston decided not to. Also, Ankeny has grown 68% in the last ten years, those numbers are not just going to go flat all of the sudden. Look at the link I provided Ankeny Schools are projected to Add about 3100 students in just 10 years, and there projections are already short for this year Kindegarten class.

No, I'm not saying that. I am positive Darboh attended Holy Trinity for at least middle school and I might be mistaken, but I believe Bravard attended Sacred Heart before Dowling.

Correct. Darboh was a Holy Trinity student and Bravard Sacred Heart.

I agree that if he is saying 1700/school, I would believe him to be way off. But if he's saying that the two schools will be 1700, with around 850 each, then I think he's much closer. We moved to Ankeny in 2006, and the growth has been amazing in the last five years.

With the new schools, new on-ramp, new shopping, new neighborhoods, Ankeny will continue to grow for the foreseeable future.

So lack of commitment transcends sports-- is that even more of a reason to encourage high school aged kids to back out on commitments? Teaching high school kids that athletic success is more important than the notion of sticking out a commitment-- that's wonderful parenting.

Depends on if you think living in a certain area justifies a committment to a school.
Quitting on a team midseason is breaking a committment.
A college athlete leaving is breaking a committment.
A High school kid who is forced to go to school in a certain place because of where he lives, but pays a 90 day eligibility penalty to play somewhere else is not breaking a committment.

If a kid gets an offer to go to a private school and has a chance to better themselves because of it, what is the problem with it them getting a scholarship to go?

First off, West Des Moines doesnt have enough room for another high school and the parents voted against it for the sake of their kids remaining together with their friends. We already have 5 state championships in football, 1 in basketball, a ton in golf, soccer, swimming, and cheerleading so that isn't an issue. Dont write about West Des Moines if you're ill informed or don't live there... (cough Ankeny cough) Secondly, the roosevelt coaching staff fell apart after last year so why would a player want to stick around for a coach he doesn't know or isnt credible? Lastly, if you go to Valley or live in West Des Moines, all this bs talk about us doesn't phase us, because haters gon' hate. Been this way for years now... that is all.

Yeah that's why (sarcasm). I don't know if Valley sucks or not but I do know high school sports do.

This is pure crap. There is plenty of room at Southwoods to expand to a second high school. The parents didn't vote for it because if the children remaining together as friends, they voted for it because they wanted to keep their FOOTBALL team as one team and not two. I voted in that election, and the FOOTBALL parents made sure their voice was heard loud and clear. All you have to do is look at all the land around Southwoods and ask why do they need all this space for a freshman school? It was built as a second high school, that never happened.
