I haven't tried Aunt Maude's or Audubon's. I ate at Lucullan's a couple times though and that was good. Probably worthy of top 5 honors.

1) Hickory Park, I can't stand that damn place. Food was great at the last location but ever since they moved into the current behemoth it's been inconsistent at best. If you order take out half the time your food won't be cooked properly. I'll only ever get a club sandwich from there anymore.

I haven't been to Ames in about 3 years. Are you talking about a recent move?

Forgot about Da Vinici's - they make a mean hoagie. Also kudos to whoever brought up West Street Deli. That's a great place for lunch.

My favorites:
1.Great Plains
2.The Spice
3.West St Deli
4.Cafe Shi
5.Open Flame (Gilbert)

If you were looking from a student's perspective, you'd probably have to throw in money for the Gyro Guy/Superdog, Flying Burrito, Jeff's Pizza and Pizza Pit. Places like Wallaby's, West Town Pub, Dublin Bay and Okoboji Grill all have good menus with plenty of selection. You can't go wrong with any of those.

Of the places that are still around that I ate at while in college.

Ge-Angelso's: Best Cheese Sticks anywhere
Great Plains: Pizza Crust and Honey. (Enough said)
Hickory Park: Love it or Hate it, it is synonymous with Ames
Gyro Guy: Must stop when going from one bar to another
Taco Bell: Best hangover food around campus.

Nice call on the open flame. The last we went there was for buck burgers and the line was outside waiting to get in the door

I forgot about GeAngelos. I'd rate them as having easily the 2nd best pizza in town. That honor used to be DaVinci's, but they closed (I still miss those cheese steaks!). As for best cheese sticks, try Jeff's Pizza's smotherella sticks. I guess it is a little more like cheese bread, but they are awesome.

I miss DaVinci's, too. That was a really incredible place.

I'm still surprised that revkah hasn't made it to this thread, yet:wideeyed:

In no particular order....
Wallaby's
Great Plains
El Azteca
Cafe' Shi
The Cafe

I think Hickory Park is overrated. They are like the Oklahoma of the Ames restaurant scene. They pretty much demolish the smaller competition (McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Subway, etc.) but when they face off against someone on their level (Wallaby's, Battles BBQ, etc.) they always fall short.

I enjoyed it in the old place. I'd say go for the novelty more than the quality of the BBQ, as the original poster said, his parents will take him there, which is appropriate. I thought it was a little expensive for what you get.

Honestly I think it is one of the places where you get more for less. Best bang for the buck place in Ames.

Wow thanks for the massive amount of responses. I now have a fantastic list of places and a couple to stop by and hit up again next time I am in town.

Wanted to throw my two cents in on Hickory Park as well. I was never too impressed with the food. It always tasted good but never great. The reason for going is it is an Ames landmark, much like Aurthur Bryant's in KC, or the Flying Wienie in Cedar Rapids (well as much of a landmark as CR can have anyway), you go for both the food and the experience. (Although anyone who has been to Aurthur Bryant's can attest the food is more than enough).

Also to clairify someone else's post Hickory Park didn't move Battles did, its now on Welch.

Do you ever eat the pork ribs? I effin love them! Plus you get 2 sides and a dinner roll all at a good price.

It is funny to see the top 5 list from a student perspective versus what I think as the top places living in Ames as an adult.

As a student:

1. Gyro/superdog
2. Jimmy Johns
3. Pizza Pit (while at Welch Ave)
4. Cocoast
5. Perkins (Only after midnight)

As an adult:

1. Dublin Bay
2. The Spice
3. Jimmy Johns
4. La Fuente
5. Hickory Park

That being said... I think that if he's living on campus, I'd stick to campus resturants to include ANGIES KITCHEN!!! Best place for a breakfast after a long night of booze.
