That's my complaint too. If posters (I suspect a few connected with the athletic department) want to pump up TJ, CPR, or whoever, that's fine, but please stop belittling our history and trying to convince us that we're Iowa State and shouldn't expect much. I'll never accept that.
I agree with Lon, but unless you want your program to get into trouble there is no way Bruce Pearl should be hired.
For myself, I don't have a thing for TJO, but as a fan, I either have to trust JP's judgment or doubt his judgment by considering my judgment to be superior to his. I don't. Neither should anyone here, in my opinion. Question JP's decisions, yes, but on what basis do you believe your ability make a coaching choice, from your seat on the sidelines, is superior to his position in the arena?
JP's depth of understanding about who is best to lead the program trumps the judgment of anyone here on this list, imo. I'm willing to follow JP, the leader of the ISU athletics department. Simple. If he offers TJO, fine. If he offers someone else, fine. If JP screws it up, he'll pay a price. Simple.

While I agree with you completely, ask yourself this... If iowa state legend Fred Hoiberg uses this job as a stepping stone to greater things, what coach wouldn't do that after having success at Iowa state?
You clearly don't know what the **** you're talking about. Since 1984, or 32 seasons, ISU has had 9 losing seasons and another 2 at .500. 4 of those belong to Greg McDermott alone. That's 21 outright winning seasons in 32 years. 15 of those 21 winning seasons, ISU had at least 20 wins.
Combined overall record is 597-418, or .588.
I'm not saying I'm against it, just doesn't seem like a Pollard move to me. Too casual, cheap, and safe.

ISU is a stepping stone, but so are about 98% of jobs in college basketball. But we can still be successful.

I've seen and heard at least a dozen times that TJ is the "best ISU can get" or "ISU is not a very attractive job".
Except on guy was an assistant on top 5/final four type teams, the other has coached on one tourney team and a bunch of teams that finished .500. The difference being Memphis handed their program another cog in what was their successful program, regardless of how this is getting spun, we are hiring an outside guy. There are only 2 guys on the roster who were ever part of a team TJ coached, only 1 that got serious playing time.
Shhhh...people think that you just need to bring in good players, and that's all. The actual coaching part doesn't really matter.
I certainly think that the Iowa State job is a very desirable job. Not elite. But very good.
Those comments are just sheer stupidity. Much like the comments made about Otzelberger.
IMO, the best scenario is a Hornacek hire, the PR and energizing effect would be huge. Otzelberger remains, And hopefully Mann. But Hornacek would have some say obviously. Since it appears Henry is going with Fred, Hornacek would have at least one spot open.
The second option is where some freak out. But I see it as Pollard having a backup plan. Having Otz available as a possible HC gives Pollard some leverage in negotiations. He does have options. Hornacek might feel his options with Phoenix are limited. And he would definitely need to go to Iowa State to get the big money.....whether it be the NBA or at Iowa State. Hornacek has just watched Fred vault from a coaching nobody to near the top of the NBA coaching salary club in just a few short years. It is hard not to notice something like that. The lure of our roster we have for next year is a bargaining chip that needs to be taken full advantage of.
I don't understand the hate for TJ. If you have hated this week it will be the same in 2 years or less with Hornacek. We are going to be really good next year, no matter who the coach is. If it isHornacek he will leave pronto because the NBA teams will come calling again. I mean Alvin Freaking Gentry just got another job. The NBA carousel never ends and once you are on it, you never get off of it.
I am sick of being a school where the coach is using it for the next opportunity. I dont blame Fred but the situation is infuriating. The guy who we thought was the most loyal Cyclone ever is walking out the door and not coming back. Bring in TJ and let him keep Mann and hire two new assistants and lets win with people who want to be here.

So why does everything you just said about Hornacek using the job as a stepping stone NOT apply to TJ???
You have a lot of facts wrong. That is not surprising.
Otzelberger was a part of the first 2 NCAA Tourney teams that Fred had. He actually recruited most of those players. Naz Long and Matt Thomas were both recruited by Otzelberger. And if you look back, you will find that he was the lead recruiter for McKay in his original recruitment before the transfer.
Bottom line is that Otzelberger has proven to be a very good recruiter and more than capable assistant coach at a Power 5 Conference School for about a decade. The decision of whether he should get the Iowa State Head Coaching job is up to Pollard. IMO, Pollard will weigh all the options. The wild card of Jeff Hornacek was not even considered to be a possibility a month or two ago. Rest assured that Pollard has not promised the HC job to anyone. He possibly has promised an opportunity to be considered, but that would be about it.
It is obvious now that Pollard's comments, for which he was criticized for making, at the Tailgate Tour regarding Fred and the NBA were calculated. They were not off the cuff comments.
