anything inaccurate here? If not, TJ has a pretty fine college basketball background. I don't know much about him, so I'm starting to snoop around.

You know, every outstanding coach was once an assistant. I'm one of those who trusts JP's judgment (not every choice he makes will be a good one, neither he nor we can know the future).

Iowa State University

Otzelberger served on the Cyclones' coaching staff for seven years. He initially joined the Iowa State coaching staff under former Iowa State Head Coach Greg McDermott in 2006,[9] and served under him as an assistant through the 2009-2010 season. When McDermott was succeeded by Fred Hoiberg "The Mayor" in May 2010, Otzelberger was promoted to the position of Associate Head Coach.[10][11]

In 2011-2012, Hoiberg led Iowa State to a 23-11 overall record and a third place finish in the Big 12 Conference,[12] advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005.[13] The Cyclones defeated reigning national champion Connecticut[14] in third round tourney action, before falling to eventual national champion Kentucky. In 2012-2013, the Cyclones finished 4th in the Big 12 Conference [15] while advancing to the third round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Ohio State on a buzzer beater.[16] During this stretch, the Cyclones were among the nation's leading teams in scoring, returning the team to national prominence.

Otzelberger has been widely regarded as one of the top recruiters in the nation. His efforts have helped secure the services of Cyclone greats Mike Taylor, Craig Brackins, Diante Garrett, Scott Christopherson, Chris Babb, Chris Allen, Will Clyburn, Korie Lucious, Melvin Ejim, Georges Niang, Naz Long, and Matt Thomas, among others. In addition to recruiting, Otzelberger was in charge of opponent scouting and game planning for the Cyclones tournament run in 2012 and 2013.

April, 2015; TJ was return to be an assistant coach for Iowa State after leaving from Washington.
University of Washington

On May 7, 2013, Washington Huskies Head Coach Lorenzo Romar announced that T.J. Otzelberger had joined his staff as an assistant coach. NBC Sports called Coach Otzelberger's hiring at Washington as one of the top 10 key assistant coaching hires for the 2013-14 season.[17] Following the 2014 season, Jay Bilas and Jeff Goodman ranked TJ as one of the top college head coaching candidates.[18] On April 1, 2015 it was announced that Otzelberger was returning to Iowa State to replace Matt Abdelmassih.[19]
Community service

When it comes to community service, Coach Otzelberger is openly passionate about teaching young people and was actively involved in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) "Stay in to Win" program.[20] This program was set up to help students focus on making important decisions in order to become more successful in school and impact their overall quality of life. Otzelberger is also highly involved with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. He is also a member of the Villa 7 Consortium, which aims to develop the nation's top assistant coaches.

Good stuff. Thanks for posting. I too am in the TJ camp when it comes to replacing CFH.

TJ at least knows the kind of player you need to win at this level unlike Greg McD.

TJ is a great recruiter. I mean, he got Brackins and Garrett under McDermott. Think of what Fred could have done with those guys.

I am on board with TJ. Frankly, the difference right now for us is recruiting. #1 we need someone who can recruit. We are competing on the floor with anyone.

It's all very obvious why he came back to ISU.

I'm sure he didn't come back to be an assistant for some mid major guy that he's been owning on the recruiting trail for years.

In the long shot scenario that Hornacek is coming here, then being the assistant to a former NBA coach is still a good spot for him. Plus Hornacek hasn't recruited at the college level and would need TJ.

Realistically Fred knows he's a capable head coach ready to run the show and told JP he's the insurance policy for his likely move to the NBA. While not a splashy hire, he's vastly more qualified for the job than Fred was before he came here. We know he can get top tier talent and has seen the best and worst of what works in the Big 12.

Otz would not be considered a "safe" hire--or a sure thing by any means, but he would be considered somebody who understands the culture of ISU and has a passion for the school, which are things we know JP values pretty heavily when choosing his coaches.

Michigan State handed the keys to a young assistant coach when Judd Heathcote retired many years ago. It can work out.

Great recruiter. Tremendous gamble to hire as a head coach.
I'm sure this is the direction that Pollard wants to go, and I have very little confidence in that direction.

The man has all this experience, but nobody is lining up to interview him for a head coaching position outside of Green Bay and Northern Kentucky. That speaks volumes to me, and looks like a major disaster waiting to happen.

If you listened to Reid Forgrave yesterday inside college basketball circles, TJ would be considered a great hire. Im on board with him

"Safe" probably isn't the right word. I'd say "easy" or "convinent" but either way I'm a TJ supporter. Ideally I'd like to see JP make a legitimate run at Hornacek, if he'll keep on TJ on board, and if he says no, then go with TJ.

I'd much rather take the chance with TJ, as opposed to an equal risk of bringing in any of the mid major, unproven coaches.

No one lining up to interview him that we know of publicaly anyway. You've taken a pretty simplistic view there. I'm assuming you were adamantly against the hoiberg hire then?

Why weren't the Green Bay and Northern Kentucky interviews in his bio? Otz was wanted by other programs and ISU is going to get him. It's something to be proud of.

Nope. Quite the opposite. I coined the phrase "Fred never fails."

TJ and Fred are not the same situation. That's a very simplistic view of things. One doesn't get interviews, one succeeds at everything he does.

TJ's coaching career is just getting put into fast forward mode. I'm sure he'd have had more opportunities if he'd stayed with Fred, but he wanted to build his resume. There's no doubt he was, at some point, going to get his opportunity to be head coach, but now, due to the circumstances, he's getting his chance sooner than normal. Hopefully he takes advantage of having some talent to thrive in this position.

Stop with the hyperbole. TJ had interviews scheduled for this spring for 2 jobs that I am aware of......and CANCELLED them when he took the ISU job.

Pretty obvious that TJ will be getting an interview at ISU.

As much as I like Fred, he did not fulfill the goals he said he had for Iowa State.

Thought it might be interesting to list all the recruits we have gotten without Otzelberger's assistance in recruiting since Otz left 2 years ago. Here you go.

I wish tj's website was still up. He had some great endorsements from former players. Like I said in the other thread, it appears he has a great work ethic. And a great work ethic is what is needed for Iowa State to succeed. #teamotz
