After the dumb play he came back and looked like the old Brock imo.
Other than the "play" Purdy looked pretty good. A QB is going to throw into double coverage sometimes if he trusts his receivers. Huge improvement from week 1. I like the 6 sacks but I don't like the 3 man rush on every long down and distance, ISU has given up a ton of 3rd and longs, a QB will find someone open if he has 5+ seconds. IMO you have to send a blitzer more often then ISU does with the 3 man front.
And the win was nice too. Agree about seeing Brock on the move more. But in general it was a solid game for the OC.Need to clean up the slow starts though.
It’s a time honored tradition for Cyclone fans to hate on the Offensive Coordinator and love on the Defensive Coordinator. I mean, Manning was literally in the running for top OC in all of football last year and people here were still calling for his head.
TCU had 29 first downs. I am just guessing, but probably an all time high for an opponent. We were a *hair away from an onsides kick recovery and a TCU winning FG.
28, and I’m guessing it’s not even close to an all time high. They also had 34 more plays than us. 33% of their plays were first downs. 27% of our plays were first down. Not so much of a big difference, especially considering our abysmal 3rd down conversion percentage.
edit: and probably about 5 or 6 of their first downs were on that last drive alone.
Other than "the play" he had 4 incomplete passes and I know for sure at least one of those was because he intentionally threw the ball out of bounds over the tight ends head because there was nothing there.
I think I caught the radio guys saying “lower body injury”. The first word caught my attention from something I was working on, I’m certain of the latter two.
And one should have been a defensive PI call that the refs apparently thought wasn’t catchable even though it almost hit the player still.
Chris, I get that you support the team. I do also. Hey, Rose's pic was game saving. BUT, TCU moved the ball up and down the field all day against our D. The QB either passed to wide open receivers or skipped past the 3 man pass rush and ran for a first down. 29 first downs.
On the last series when everyone knew they were going to pass, in spite of TCU penalties, we could not stop them. All against QB's who were either at a HS last year or a QB with heart defect. Were there QB's that good, or maybe our D scheme is not working?
On a very few downs, we put an extra man rushing. Almost on every occasion, something good happened. When not, their QB sat in the pocket and picked us apart.
In the last LA game, on the last series when the game was still in doubt, our D performed exactly the same. Allowed the team to move at will down the field, used the clock and left our team totally defeated.
Do fans not remember how the offense looked the year Manning was in the NFL????
On the defense side, the crazy thing for me is that ISU had six (seven according to the box score) sacks, and still gave up 500 yards of offense....that's kind of high. And yes, a bunch of it came on the last drive, but even considering that, ISU gave up over 400 yards before that last drive. It could have been big trouble if Duggan had played all game.
Regarding the running game, we'll find out soon enough. I expect the same treatment that ISU has received in the past, where the opponent is going to stuff the line/box and force ISU to make some passing plays.
