WILLIAMS: Three Up, Three Down from ISU's 37-34 win over TCU

IMO, all of the conversation about the offense in this thread back up exactly the lead of my column. There is a lot of room for growth here, which is good. If I thought Iowa State maxed out yesterday, then we'd have a problem. This team can get a lot better.
That’s fair. Might have been first or second series where Brock barked at Breece after a blown up play. Honestly, I was glad to see that initiative from Brock. Taking charge.

Tucker Robertson.

"Iowa State is playing eight deep from a primary three-man front.

This group is going to be a problem for every opponent it faces the rest of the season."

LOL.
Our sit back and PAW tent defense scheme is horrible. Easy to run against. Easy to pass against.

You can get sacks all day, but if on the next play they throw to a wide open receiver for 15 yds, what does it matter.

Wide open receivers. Same story as last games
Pump the brakes a little bit. The defense is designed to allow short passes and smother the receiver to prevent extra yardage. Take away the worthless touchdown on the last play of the game and they gave up 21 points, with I believe 7 of those points coming on a drive that started on like our 35 yard line after their punt return.

Other than a few busted plays, our defense played well. Allowing Just 21 points will win you a lot of games in this conference.

What are you seeing from Purdy? Are we overreacting to 2 early games, or does it look like something is off with him?
It isn’t just the one stupid play yesterday. Against ULL he threw the jump ball to Milton that should have been picked. I thought we’d start seeing more mature decision making this year.

So does the team finally become a run first team like they preach or do they continually count on Purdy to bail the offense out?

Definitely overreacting.

I too have been worried about Brock continuing to throw jump balls when we no longer have 6' 6" receivers on the other end, but to his credit I didn't see any of that yesterday.

There was one into double coverage. That may be the only one I remember off hand.

I hope this is right.
Duggan looked pretty sharp though. How much time has he been able to practice, with all he’s been through?
After coming back from a commercial they panned to the sideline and he was standing there and his wide receivers were all sitting and looking up at him with grins and head bobbing.
He'll be a good player for them.

IMO, it's a guy trying to do too much. I don't think most fans realize how much Matt put on him as a freshman. Brock was basically calling plays out there, a ton of read-options, etc. Cuz he had to. Matt thinks of him like another coach. They don't really need that anymore. He was really banged up at the end of last year. It's a transition. He hasn't been great by any means yet but I do think we saw a step forward yesterday. I'd like to see him in a normal week with Milton, Kolar and Downing in the mix. Probably overreacting but that's hoping he flips a switch here. I believe in him.

We all probably dont say that enough around here because we all know how good he is. He's a great leader out there.

It took him a series and a half to knock the rust off, but he looked pretty good after that.

Once Brock finds his rythym with this new WR group and Kolar is fully healthy then I think we start seeing Purdy progress..

Remember there was no Spring football...really no summer. Brock hasnt had much time to build a bond on the field with this WR group and it is showing at times.

I'd expect each game to continue to look more smooth in the passing game.

Threw one to Akers early into double coverage.
I think what we’ve seen in a weird year with a bunch of new OL and an injured Downing, Hudson and Kolar it’s taken Purdy 6-7 quarters to get comfortable. Seems reasonable.
He’s got to be better from the start next week, but I’m confident he will.

This was one of the best defensive performances out of ISU in some time. They were able to make the big play when needed. We scored TD’s off both of the TCU turnovers. I also appreciated the big plays made in the last 5 minutes of the first half. 16-7 is a lot better than 10-14. Brock’s fumble may have very well cost us the game otherwise.

Campbell has spoiled us with running backs. First Montgomery, now Breece Hall. I really like Hall's game, he's very patient and runs super smooth.
