Thoughts on Coach, Be Respectful

Really people they lost a conf road game come back from the cliff they are 12-6 and 1-2 in conf not a train wreck at all.... Why so negitive they did not play bad tonight TT had only 3 turnovers the second half get over it...

It's the overall trend.

If someone can tell me what Big 12 coach has done a less satisfactory job than McDermott so far, and back it up with real, actual stats, I'll buy them a beer. Right now, we have the most underperforming coach in the Big 12. He's never beaten a ranked team, he's never finished with a winning record, he's never made post season play, he's never had his team ranked. Pat Knight has had his team ranked, and has beaten ranked teams. Bzdelick beat a ranked team the other night. McDermott is the least successful coach in the Big 12.

Man, football cannot come soon enough!! It has been tough Coach Mac, but he has done it to himself, where are the fundamentals? no passion and like last night no effort or sense of urgency. Iowa State had that team and just did not put them away you can see on their face how they feel and it starts with the coaching staff. The future underneath him to me scary because where is the talent going to be when Brackins and Gilstrap leave? The season is not over yet, but does not look promising unless they change their mindset to play better DEFENSE!!!! Defense wins ya ball games and they do not commit to defensive side of the ball which pisses me off something fierce.

Man, I used to love basketball season. Ever since McD has been here though, I've lost my love for it a little bit each season. I"m to the point now where I just don't even enjoy watching the games. Sloppy play, no rebounding, no hustle, no defense, no offense, it's just garbage basketball to watch. I keep finding myself watching other games though and wishing ISU played that way, and I hate it. I watched the UNI vs. Witchita State game the other night. Great game, I wish ISU had either of those teams. Both are more interesting to watch.

I really get a kick out of the people that still have hope for us making any post season tourney this year. We've won 1 Big 12 road game in like 3 years. All of the sudden that's going to change? We've beaten ZERO ranked teams in McDs time at ISU, all of the sudden that's going to change? Funny stuff. I think there are 2 winnable games left on our schedule, Colorado and Nebraska at home and that's it. Anyone expecting more than that is just completely kidding themselves and just hoping for something that has been proven time and again that it won't happen.

The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of a coaching change this offseason. I want a guy to come in here like Rhoads did the for the football team. A guy that stresses defense and playing smart and can actually coach the team to do it. I want a guy to come in here that doesn't completely whiff on 70% of the recruits he brings in.

Oh well, at least now everyone has 2 days to talk about how we are going to beat KU on Saturday to look forward too, even though deep down everyone knows we have zero chance at that.

My thoughts...McDermott is a very honorable man who just can't seem to figure out what it takes to win in a major conference. I was concerned when he was hired because he had no major conference playing or coaching experience. Last year, I posted about experience of all the head coaches in the Big 12 and Big Ten prior to their current positions. All but a couple of them had either previously played or coached (assistant or head) in a major conference (Big 12, Big Ten, Big East, ACC, Pac-10, SEC). I don't know what it is like now, but probably not much has changed.

Yes, McDermott played a few major conference teams each year while he was at UNI (and even beat some of them), but that's not the same as the experience gained by battling through a conference season, where you have to face talented athletes everytime out. It's pretty clear that this lack of knowledge about major conference MBB hurt McDermott right off the bat. We saw this problem in the initial recruits he brought in who were not cut out for Big 12 MBB.

I'm fine with a learning curve, but this is year four. The talent is still questionable. The team does not play physically tough. There are basic fundamental deficiencies on both offense and defense. The player turnover continues.

From an emotional standpoint, I'm always hopeful things will turn around during the remaining games. From the logical standpoint, it is tough to find reasons to justify the emotion.

Does anybody remember the Morgan team that looked like they were lost and went on a huge second-half of the Big 12 to make it to the NCAAs? Maybe it was the Final Four NIT year, but still. Around that same time, 2003 maybe? When the football team won like 4 of their last 5 games to get a bowl.

These things happen often. And being on message boards both of those years there was a lot of chicken little crap. Why not let a season play out before firing the coach or bagging on a player so much that they quit the team, either figuratively or literally? "Based on history", I'm sure we'll hear...

It was 2004-05. That team had already shown they COULD be tough, beating a ranked UVA team in Hilton earlier that season. This team has shown next to nothing. Also that was the 2nd year of the coaches tenure, and he had just went to the NIT Final 4, not the 4th year of jack ****.

Mike Davis at UAB would be a great replacement.

How about Bo Ryan at Wisky??? He is a fantastic coach at a program that has lost a lot of its luster in a terribly weak conference. Part of my thought here is that JP may have some connections to Bo Ryan from his days with Wisky.

That would be a fantastic coup if we could get him, I think he is as good as anybody out there. Currently, they are in contention for the B10 and was able to beat Duke in the ACC/B10 challenge this year though, so I don't see how his program has lost any luster.

So maybe it was inaccurate to say lost its luster, I instead should have said maybe Bo Ryan is ready for a new (very big) challenge in his coaching career. If anyone could pull off persuading him away from Wisconsin it would be JP, of course I have no idea what kind of relationship exists between the 2 of them either....

I was simply stirring the pot

coach needs to go. If we dont make the tourney then look what happens...we lose brackins and gilstrap. Brackins isnt doing much at this point either way but hes still our guy. Look forward to the starting lineup for next year? nope. Big 12 tough as heck? yep. Coach mac staying? hope not. Hes in his 4th year with no results and i have no idea why he got an extension. Poor decision making by pollard. Dont you have to get results to get more money and extensions? i know he wanted to show the faith he has in him but that should be gone as well

IFFFFF and that is a big IF a new coach has to be hired by ISU, JP better be ready to open up the check book and bring a splash hire in. Some one with a name and that has won at the BCS level. The only way to start over is with someone who can get national pub, is known by everyone, and will have parents opening their doors to him and have coaches calling him telling him about good players.

Bo Ryan is 62. I'd be surprised if he moved anywhere before he retires. Secondly, he seems to favor a slow-down game style. Not sure how well that would work night after night in the Big 12. It hasn't been a stellar success for Doc Sadler...

Why we are bad

After seeing Northern Iowa in the latest Sports Illustrated it is obvious why we are bad. To compete day in and day out in the Big 12 Coach Mac has had to recruit a different kind of player than when he was at UNI. Needless to say he hasn't forgotten how to coach. The problem is that the kind of players he needs to recruit to compete athletically are not his kind of kids. At UNI he had kids that bought in to the system, knew they were never going to play in the NBA so all they cared about was winning as a team. We don't have that now.

There are many coaches who have made the successful jump from a mid-major recruiting pool to a BCS conference recruiting pool.

“I got in this profession because I love to coach basketball, and I love to help young people grow. If winning ever gets in the way of that, then I have to get out of it." Greg McDermott

Well, coach, yesterday and last night, winning got in the way of that. So what will you do now?

Maybe it isn't working for Doc, but LE seemed to do okay with a slower grind it out brand of bball. Depending on the day and the thread, his style was either a contributor to the death of Hilton Magic or bringing him back as coach is the answer to all of our problems...
