If true, that could explain the extra long BOC meeting today @ MU. 6 years doesn't really lock people down that hard but 13 could do it.

I heard rumors about this as well...apparently, Mizzou's "last ditch" attempt at negotiation included the extended rights deal, limits on Tier 3 revenue (some sharing, at least) and prohibitions on HS content on the LHN. From my (very limited) understanding, the last one was the dealbreaker.

The "extra long" BOC meeting dealt with a lot of non-conference affiliation issues, and I think the outcome (if not the final vote) wasn't in doubt.

Sounds like the B12 was close to signing away media rights for up to 13 years earlier today, but Texas wouldn't commit to not show HS content on the LHN so that stopped the deal.

I can't believe this part...
One source said the granting of rights would have been closer to the length of time left on the Big 12's Tier 2 TV deal with Fox, which has 13 years remaining.

But as part of the agreement, there were restrictions proposed on Tier 3 content, and Texas balked, the source said. The restrictions had to do with any and all high school content, the source said.

Texas' Longhorn Network has been at the center of debate over the airing of anything having to do with high schools. Currently, the NCAA has said LHN can show high school highlights in a news format. But LHN, which launched on Aug. 26, hasn't even been doing that - to avoid more controversy as the league works out its issues, sources said.

Texas would have to talk to ESPN before making any final decision on content restrictions, since ESPN owns and operates LHN, and those talks haven't yet happened, according to sources.

REALLY? Texas, you haven't talked to ESPN about showing high school content or not? After all this time you haven't had those discussions? If you really care about the conference Texas, then why do you care about showing high school highlights?

Oklahoma State president Burns Hargis will become the new chairman of the Big 12's board of directors, with Brady Deaton stepping down.

Chuck sure screwed up spelling T Boone Pickens

If Chip's article is true, and the ******* LHN and HS content is the roadblock to the B12 having over a decade of stability then move me into the **** Texas group.

I don't get the fascination with high school highlight packages. Do they really need this to get recruits to play for Texas? Do they really think this would push them over the top for recruits whereas recruits would say no to them otherwise?

Interesting to hear the latest efforts in securing a long-term deal, that may make even more sense for Missouri to take the actions they did tonight. You could believe that Missouri is a team that is leading the charge to get some changes done, they are the only one in somewhat of a position to do so. When Texas balked today at the deal they went ahead and made their move, perhaps a slight ploy to see if they can pull anything else from Texas.

Regardless of Missouri's decision, the Big 12 appears to be in a position to survive regardless...

I wonder what Pollard is thinking at this point? He and Alden were pretty close from what I have heard.

The Big Ten Network won the provider battle because it had content people always had access to and then couldn't: multiple college football games.

ESPN and Texas know that the LHN could be screwed if their only bargaining chip is Texas vs. Rice.

High school highlights are in the noise IMO. Without more games, the network is destined to die. The conference should stand pat on NO MORE CONFERENCE GAMES ON LHN. We have KU to thank this year for screwing it up.

Sounds to me Mizzou is playing the role of OU few weeks back.

Talk about new conference. Texas gets a little worried. Makes concessions. If so, it makes the Big 12 seems unstable for the next week or two. But could help stabilize the conference for a long time.

So how long does it take Mizzou to "explore their options?"

I guess they've been sitting on their duff the last couple weeks and haven't really considered how their indecision could end up costing the Big 12 if they choose to stay.

Yes, but Texas care at all about Missouri, or do they simply say, "See ya!" We're not making any concessions because of you.

The deciding factor will be if other schools aren't willing to join because of the lack of concessions by Texas which at this point all have to do with the LHN.

OU already got them to make some. I don't see why they wouldn't help Mizzou out here since they know the conference they "wanted" earlier/their back up plan, the PAC 12, said they aren't adding anyone. I think everyone not UT knows Mizzou is a great school for the Big 12 and will work with them on keeping them in. Everyone now knows no one wants UT so their options are next to nil on giving anyone the finger and watching a school walk.

Reason #73 not to pay attention to Greg Swaim: he's indicating that the Big 10 has offered Mizzou and Rutgers.
