Southwest disaster

It's nice idea, but the obstacles involved make it a monumental task that would take decades to complete.

What I'd like to see in the short(er) term is prevent further airline consolidation (and potentially force some decoupling), and abandon the hub and spoke system the airlines use now. It reduces efficiency, it bottle necks traffic, we see what happens when a hub has weather issues and it restricts competition due to limited terminal spots.

Moving away from hub and spoke opens up competition for smaller more efficient airlines with direct flights to multiple locations providing some flexibility to quickly change routes due to weather or unexpected demand.

The biggest obstacle unfortunately is that it requires the FAA to get their **** together as well.
Ah yes, the FAA the quintessential example of a captured agency.

I’m generally conservative. But I’ve grown to despise the very definition of a corporation. The whole thing needs re-thought.

Entire companies put their employees, and even customers, lower on their list of priorities than made-up financial metrics to appease their share price.

All while the VP’s , etc. in charge of executing those priorities get most of their annual compensation in stock options, that they help inflate.

Such an F’d up pyramid scheme.

It’s about time we nationalize the airlines.

Nationalize? Probably not.

Restore more of the regulation and force more slack into the system? Probably.

A lot of the issues we see can be traced back to airlines running things on a skeleton basis and any minor disruption quickly blows a bunch of things up. When things are going well it maximizes short-term profit, but it doesnt take much, as we have seen from multiple airlines now, for it to suddenly result in thousands of flights being cancelled

The issue I remember from delta is when they ****** up and gave away their flights for cheap as ****. Flew to Puerto Rico for $75 round trip.

I'd like them to **** up again, please
Oh yeah, I got a 1st class round trip flight to Oahu for around $100 from one of their screw ups.

Why is it dumb @isuno1fan ? How many times have we bailed out the airlines only for them to do a stock buyout and skimp on infrastructural improvements? Remember when bag fees started because “gas prices?” Gas went down and the fees never went away. Airlines pocketed it. If it’s this critical to the operation of our country and our economy, why don’t we put some skin in the game?
Have you called the IRS or Social Security office? IRS literally does not answer. I'm still waiting for a refund promised to be sent to me in 2-3 weeks back in August. Even contacting my Congressperson's office has not resulted in action.

There is no recourse if the government monopoly does not provide decent or reliable product or service. At least now you can try Delta, United, American etc if you don't like how Southwest is doing things.

Probably somewhere in the last 2-3 years, they tried to upgrade systems but it cost 2-3 million and they scaled down to keep limping along......

Any other frequent travelers following this mess? SW continues to use “weather distractions” as an excuse for canceling 70-80% of their flights over the past two days and telling people they cant get them anywhere for 4-5 days. The videos and info on Twitter are insane.

SW Airlines either bit off wayyyy more than they could chew with too many flights and too few pilots ; or they are a logistics mess right now after cutting some employees.

Probably both of the these have happened.

The boomers are usually the problem. Get them out of the way and let other people actually fix things.

Id imagine its a mishmash of issues.

Theres plenty of blame to go around on boomers, but some of this is likely also people protecting their own jobs by not documenting their work well enough that a ****** employer might find it easier to hand that job off to someone cheaper\overseas.

So,....now we like boomers?

Ha, I didn't elaborate. Using that knowledge as job security for themselves hurts everyone else down the line. It's honestly another reason I'm a fan of real parental leave in this country, (or normalizing extended vacations!) especially for men. Force many out of their role for 6+ months and documentation, cross training improve and see that info start to be dispersed downward to junior staff. Who will likely immediately try to automate it or improve it in some way.

This is the same story for a lot of industries. Baby boomers are retiring and there's just not enough in the workforce to replace them. You then have companies that are so focused on shareholder returns that they are unwilling to raise wages to attract new talent. So they are seeing short term gains, but it's going to hurt them in the long run as their reputations are killed by poor service.

Fingers crossed getting exposed forces them to figure it out but if not, the work force is adapting so boo hoo for them.

Oddly enough SW was an airline iirc that you could actually change flight times with and were known for good service. Not at the moment.
