Southwest disaster

Problem is that those penalties would be passed on to the customer. Yes, you may see some improvements as the worse providers would be priced out of the market. But in the end, it'll just cost more to fly.
Not really…. It encourages good practices by airlines and reevaluating. We price out US to EU flights 3-4 times a year, and it almost cheaper to get to anywhere in EU than Hawaii (a standard we use)

I fly a lot for work and never use Southwest and this is one of the many reasons.

The US Department of Transportation and FAA should revoke Southwest's Air Carrier certification until it can prove it can adequately manage irregular operations to a sufficient standard.
Heavy handed govt. something needs to be addressed by govt about this. No opinion as of yet.

It was going to cost my 5 person family $5-7K to fly to Florida for the Holidays this year. I realize holidays are bad times. But I looked at other times and it still would be close to $4k to book flights to pretty much anywhere we thought of going over the next 6 months. Allegiant you can get a bit cheaper, but by the time you pay all the fees most places were about $750+ for 1 round trip ticket.

Does not take long to realize you save a lot of money driving at those prices. Hell I looked at taking the family to the Caribbean for the holidays. Flights were ridiculous, like $2-3K per ticket to the Bahamas, just stupid prices. I admit I didnt shop a lot, once I seen how high things were I just gave up and we had planned on driving until plans totally changed.

Depends on how you want to do it, around Christmas sometimes costs more than double than going a just couple weeks later. Pulling my son out of five days of high school in January is worth the huge savings on flights and hotels.

I understand that it is probably the worst time to book during the holidays, but unfortunately, my fam has limited choices. Wife works in Education, so if we are going to go anywhere, its during holidays, spring break, or summer, not allowed to take extended time at other times, unless for specific illness etc.

Also, like last year we traveled to include the bowl game, and would have this year too if that was an option, but as things began looking more like no bowl, we started looking at other options, and then just decided to cancel going anywhere this year, until at least spring break.
