Southwest disaster

What are my chances of having a flight cancelled that leaves on 12/30? I won’t be mad about it so tell me straight.

Flying Delta or United or similar, probably less than 5% chance. Here's yesterday which is still being impacted by the storm happening on a crazy busy travel weekend. Not ****** up as **** airlines will probably be fine by the 30th.

Companies severely underfund technology even when it is at the core of their business. First thing cut when when cost savings start is all the long term IT upgrade projects. And then it massively breaks and everyone acts surprised.
This. All day this. Having spent quite a bit of time in both Banking and Insurance, some of the systems running multi-billion dollar companies are still green-screen.

I wonder if they'll let you preemptively cancel If you just say I don't trust your **** company to fly me on time. They'll probably say not enough notice

The industry had many older pilots who they paid off with early retirement when the pandemic hit. Most airlines were just barely getting by before that, then the short sighted idea to get rid of many of the most experienced ones, they shot themselves in the foot.

It's hard to get new pilots because most newbies are stuck flying the small regional first getting crap wages. A person really has to love flying to put up with $40K a year and never being at home.

You are a little off on the wage. Air Wisconsin, which operates as United Express is hiring 1st officers at $61/hr with up to a $70k bonus. That's a $120k base and I would say that it doesn't get much more regional than Chicago to Eau Claire.

Just feel awful for everyone involved who isn't interested in the airlines profit margin. I can't imagine how bad it would be to be stranded with no real idea when you can get home. I also feel horrible for the people who have to interact with the customers as I'm sure they take the brunt of it with no ability to make things right.

I think that’s usually per flight hour which max out at 100 per month. Most pilots are less. Per Google, the average salary for a regional pilot is $77k so there are definitely entry level pilots making much less.

Sure, but I don't think you could find one entry level airline pilot making $40k, like you stated and I'd buy you lunch if you could find me one flight attendant making that much.

Full disclosure, I live with someone who deals with this subject directly.

They seem to treat their employees pretty well..

Having worked in this type of industry for years, these companies call everything an emergency. It is their normal tactic for forcing their policies on the employees. Almost always, these so called emergencies are totally self created or completely avoidable with proper management, or in other cases said emergency is completely made up.

And probably written in a dead programing language that you can't find someone to work on. So everyone's afraid of touching it and they just pray that it keeps working.

At my daughters in KC.
Son flew in Friday evening on SW, was delayed about 45 minutes coming in.
My ex flew in Thursday from Chicago, was suppose to leave today....last night at 10 pm SW canceled her return flight to Chicago, SW informed her nothing available until at least jan2 or 3...
Son waiting....on his weds flight out ofKC....but he's been looking and at mid morning his flight was removed from the scheduled itinerary at KCI.
He's suppose to be back by Saturday, won't make it on SW....now looking at options.
We drove from E. Iowa on Monday....except for the **** show on I80 between ia ****** n des moines....we made it....although it took an extra 90 minutes.

Not enough according to the younger generation. I mean the CEO makes millions and is doing nothing but enjoying holiday time off with the family.

******** on your employee base in an industry that is desperately in need of a workforce is certainly a choice. I'd guess a larger reason they are understaffed is so many people saying screw it and finding new airlines to work for.

And it sounds like the airlines are particularly a mess because of the mergers over the years and all the different antiquated systems all being mashed together with duct tape.
