Why? You just said performance in football has everything to do with us going to the MAC...KU is worse than us, so where are they going? Sun Belt?
Sage would be good. As well as any former ISU player with NFL experience, because that is what ISU needs to sell. They can't sell team tradition, but they can sell individual player success and the opportunity to learn from coaches who have made it.
ISU HAS to be creative with this. Everyone thinks that just hiring some random mediocre coach and expecting different results are nuts. It's a unique school that requires a unique strategy.

Frankly, at this point, I don't care who it is. Have a hard time believing it can get any worse than the current regime.
the whole of this board is a small amount of the full fan base and the ones that really hate JP aren't even that big of a percentage here.
Think it's tough to hire a good football coach at ISU, Fire JP and we'll be lucky to find anyone to take over the AD position.
There are a few grumblings on here, but what JP has accomplished here in his tenure is pretty amazing.
IMO, those who think JP should be fired must be younger posters, those who don't remember what it's been like at ISU for the decades before he got here. Where penny pinching wasn't even a phrase, because they weren't even spending pennies on the programs.
There is no one with any clout or any real large groups of fans who don't appreciate all that JP has done.
The complaining about JP comes from self entitled creeps, who just think if you spend a little money, that they are most likely not donating, it should turn one of the worst D1 football programs of all time into Alabama.

I don't disagree with any of what you've said. Like i said, I don't happen to have a problem with JP at this point. That being said, this may represent a vocal minority, but here is a wall of anything from JP questioning to calls for his head.

The seeds of doubt are there, justified or not. I think its a valid point that JP really can't take a gamble on his next FB hire and Sage would be exactly that. All hires are risky, but a true gamble like Sage wouldn't be wise at this juncture; not with everything he has done to advance the facilities and culture.

Sage would need a very very very strong assistant HC, OC, and DC. A bunch of former players on his staff would end as a complete failure.
We need an AD who cares about the product on the field/court. Not just an accountant. He did a great job financially with our upgrades, now it's time to bring in someone willing to win.
Does Arnaud still coach at Ames high? What is he up to these days? At least he has coaching experience.
On a scale of 1-10 for this idea, I would give it about an 8/10. I like the creativeness of it, a man who bleeds Cardinal and Gold, and one of the all time great players in this program. But having 0 experience may be a problem. I like Sage, but would much prefer him to have any sort of assistant coaching experience. We also need defense, which I'm not sure how much Sage the Rage would help with that right away. But hey, it may be a start. As long as Rhoads gets out.
If anyone wants a case study on why hiring beloved former players as head coaches in football is a bad idea, check out Jon Embree at Colorado. Played TE at CU under Bill McCartney in the 80's, position coach at CU in the 90's, bounced around the NFL as a position coach in the 00's. Was brought in as the head coach after the debacle of the Dan Hawkins years to re-energize the fanbase. Filled his staff with former CU players and coaches to fill fans with memories of CU's glory years. Fired in two years after compiling a record of 4-21, including 1-11 in his last year, the worst year in CU football history.
Jon Embree wasn't set up for success by the Colorado athletic department. He was asked to come in and clean up a mess left by the former coaching staff, in a school on a geographic island from the rest of the conference, in a sport that hadn't had a lot of success in recent years (sound familiar?). The AD banked on his name recognition to get fans to buy in and his ability to sell recruits on why Colorado would be a good fit. This failed spectacularly. While Embree may have loved his alma mater and been a good NFL player, he was completely overwhelmed by the challenge of rebuilding a football program in a P5 conference.
The thing is, Jon Embree had a WAY better resume to be a head coach in a major conference than Sage Rosenfels does. Embree had been a coach at Colorado for nearly a decade in the 90's, with another decade of experience at other Pac 12 programs and the NFL. Loved the school. But he was in no way prepared to be the head coach at Colorado.
Sage Rosenfels has none of that experience. I agree, I'd love to have him back at ISU as a broadcaster, or QB coach, or something in that capacity. He could even make a fantastic head coach some day. But the odds of him failing as ISU's next HC are overwhelming. ISU has way too many forces working against it (location, tradition, money, etc) to turn the keys over to someone who has literally never run a practice, or recruited, or assembled a staff before.
