Roommate Q

And I'll never forget how he would wear the same clothes every day. And he would leave to shower, come back, and he would be wearing the same clothes, as if taking the shower also cleaned his shirt and shorts.

We had a guy from right outside Beijing that would wear the same clothes but he would wash his clothes in the sink every time he showered. You go into the bathroom and 10% chance there was a naked asian guy bent over the sink washing his clothes.

I got a random roommate and it worked out great. We ended up living together the whole time at ISU and are still great friends. The majority of the floor had random roommates and only 2 rooms had conflicts, halfway through the year they switched and it worked out.

I think I'm going random for sure, might even room with cyfan13. We'll see! Thanks for the creepy stories y'all.

Sophomore year I moved to one of the suite style with another random to be closer to my friends on that side of campus and to get away from the Larch hell hole. Had no issues and got along but the whole floor stayed from the previous year. They had their stuff and I had mine.

It may have been a hell hole but some days I would kill to be back there again.

Yeah, it did kind of turn into a war story slide show, didn't it? Sorry about that! Best of luck - the next 4-5 years should be a wonderful experience for you. After that, you can start posting your own crazy college experiences. :)

Yeah. Coughed all the time.

Came back from winter break and someone wrote "Dooshbag" on his name at the door. I didn't take it down because I wanted him to see it.

After two weeks in the semester, I Facebook messaged him asking if he knew classes started. He said yeah, he'd be in Ames soon.

Turns out he was in Ames packing up his stuff while I was in class. When I got back, all his stuff was out, and his name had been taken off the door.

I slept on the wall he must have slept on and his coughing would wake me up. We called him coughing kid.

Question for applying for a random roommate at ISU next year. Is there a page or something of that nature to find other future freshman who are also going random that you can get to know instead of just going completely random? My buddy is going to Iowa and they have something similar.. Thanks in advance!

UNDER COMMENTS just write: "Randomly looking for studious engineering student who is tall, athletic, blond hollywood type female."

blond is male
blonde is female

It is one of the few gender words in the english language.

But give me redheads anyway

Another vote in favor of random roommates. My roommate I had freshman year in Helser and I got along fine, but had almost nothing in common. I got to become good friends with some dudes I met through him, and ended up living with them for a year and half junior and senior year. It's a really good learning experience on how to live/deal with people that you didn't necessarily want to interact with otherwise. I know if I had roomed with friend from HS I definitely would not have met as many people as I did the two years I was in the dorms.

Lol it was an entertaining read for sure

I had a lucky situation. I went random, but my roommate ended up being from the very tiny town in western Iowa that my mom grew up in (and all her family still lived in). Since it was a town of 400 people, my uncles and grandparents already knew him. He was pretty reserved, but that isn't a bad thing with a roommate. We were friendly but never became real friends, despite living together in an apartment for three more years after the first in the dorms. Haven't spoken with him since he graduated, which I guess I regret.

I had a high school buddy go at the same time... Random didn't work out well for him and he ended up with a foreign student, whom he didn't mesh that great with (though not terrible). He was one of those that couldn't take the "big city." He was also the Valedictorian in my hometown but ended up washing out when it was apparent he wasn't going to get into vet med. I knew he was gone when he pulled up in a brand new fully loaded F-250 before the end of the semester. Sure enough, quit school at the semester and started working to pay off his truck...

Wipe his pillow case down your crack.

I didn't read the question or any of the thread. I just assume this is the answer for any question about a roommate.

Pretty much what everyone said. You never know either way. In my case though I roomed with my cousin (who wasn't from the same town) who I basically have everything in common with. So we got along perfectly. Then you mix your group of friends from your town with their group of friends from their town along with new friends you make either on your floor, in class, parties, etc.

Still live with him, along with a kid from my hometown, and adding another from my hometown for our house next year. Though the primary portion of my social circle is comprised of people I've known all my life, I'm alright with that. As long as you're happy it doesn't matter either way.
